Did I see Kerkar provided 2 assists tonight?

No, it was three. Both of JJs goals plus Hulse's.

  • I am guessing the ref punished Hamer for fannying around with his goal kicks, plus added time for all the bookings (8!) Thus the 6 additional minutes.
  • Forget about the goal, the quality of Stephens set pieces tonight was immense.

Powell got it right tonight (well, apart from taking Stephens off, that upset us).

Going from 451 to 442 was crucial
and the front two were great, as were Stephens, Pritch and the crowd.

Just before we scored the equaliser the 'c'mon you reds' was the loudest I'd heard the valley in ages
  • Powell's body language throughout was a worry. Has something been said to him?

I thought this too. Also he seemed somewhat upset after the game going down the tunnel?
Could just be he is shattered!
  • Is there an argument to say that we didn't actually play any better tonight, just that we took basically all our chances?

I wasn't there, so I can't comment, but we could have beaten Wolves and Leeds, plus we could have had 2 or 3 on Saturday before Boro turned it around.

Anyway, I'm absolutely buzzing. What a brilliant night.
  • What a game, had it on CAFC player in my studio, didnt get much work done after that, nobody can surely question are squads desire after that result.

    Fantastic Night.

  • 'Once more unto the breach' 'Cry God for Charlton, England, and Sir Chrissy!'
  • I am guessing the ref punished Hamer for fannying around with his goal kicks, plus added time for all the bookings (8!) Thus the 6 additional minutes.

The amount of time wasting was minimal, no player was booked for time wasting (even with that prat in charge!)

Unbelievable game, the turning point was the header Helguson missed, which would have out them 3-1 up. JJ gets his second almost immediately, it's 2-2 at half time, the team and crowd are buzzing, while Cardiff must have been stunned.

Haynes was brilliant, I would have taken him off earlier, as soon as the 5th goal went in, as he was never going to last 90 mins, hopefully it was just cramp. A shame BWP couldn't have scored as well, which would have boosted his confidence, but hopefully he'll get the winner on Sunday instead!

    Posting without reading as usual.

That will go down as one of those "I was there" games under the lights in years to come for all sorts of reasons.

2-0 down and wobbling on the ropes before the skipper stepped up to lead from the front with two goals just before halftime and to think that there were those who wanted him dropped!

Second half we came out and went for it. The pace of Haynes worried the likes of Hudson and Stephens showed why some on here rate him so highly. His goal from the free kick to make it 3-2 was perhaps a little fortunate but given the bad luck we've had this year I reckon we were due that. There was certainly nothing fortuitous about the goals Haynes and Hulse scored. They were both well worked openings and clinically finished.

So at 90 minutes Charlton have pulled themselves by their bootstraps from 2-0 down to a seemingly home and dry 5-2 up. A dangerous state of affairs as all seasoned Charlton watchers know only too well! The referee magically discovered 6 minutes added on time and Cardiff duly scored two quick goals to leave us all on the edge of our seats at 5-4. Somehow we saw it through what seemed an eternity to hang on to the 3 points.

A drained Chris Powell gave what seemed a lacklustre couple of waves from the tunnel.

That's just the bare facts behind the game.

On the pitch Pritchard covered every blade of grass and more, Solly put one of the best wingers in this league in his pocket despite playing on the wrong side and Haynes scared the Cardiff defence every time he got the ball. I hope to God that his injury is not serious as he has the potential to offer us a completely different dimension. It is invidious to pick out individuals though. This was a squad effort by 13 guys determined not to lose for Chris Powell.

In the stands my respect to the drummer and Covered End Choir who kept going non stop for the best part of 20 minutes from the kick off with "Chrissy Powell's Red Army." I did what I could to join in but had to take the odd breather being an old git!

I hope Chris Powell now knows and appreciates just how highly he is regarded by the vast majority of fans and is encouraged by it.

  • Danny Haynes is ok tweeted it was only cramp and not his hamstring .
  • Fuck me, thought we were gonna throw it away there, where the 6mins came from I'll never know.

Had £1 on Helguson fgs at 4/1 so not too bad ;)
  • Not read other reports. That was, that was I dunno, muck and bullets? A win based on courage and character against an apparantly overwhelming foe? Rorkes Drift?
Morrison at right back, Chris at left, Haynes starting, BWP not, Stephens, Pritchard playing a peerless hour before he got completely knackered, bookings all over, 6 blimmin minutes, 4 different goalscorers, and letting four for the second match in a row, but, but three juicy points. Analysis pretty pointless tonight after all that.

that is pure poetry. concise summation. thanks, coyr. there may be trouble ahead but whilst these music and powelly ahead, lets take the addicks and dance
  • Back home now, what an important and unexpected 3 points from our patched up disjointed side.

Haynes ran Hudson and their other CB ragged with his pace and Hulse worked hard with him. Pritchard looked like he could run around all night so much energy which troubled Cardiff. Both defences were all over the place but Cardiff first two goals were because we didn't defend set pieces well. Stephens had a good game, I criticised him earlier hopefuly he read it and proves me wrong with more performances like tonight.

The support was brilliant, Chrissy Powell red army for 10 minutes at the start and even when 2 down we kept behind the team and they rewarded with a performance which was for us and the manager. Loved it. 6 minutes injury time was ridiculous don't care about the two late goals we got 3 points and everyone below us lost so a good night.
  • Won the Jackpot draw tonight so am very happy.

That aside, the defending from front to back was at times schoolboy like. Comceeding far too many goals from corners at the moment (keep Jacko of the box).

Haynes a massive plus tonight, was shown how much so when bwp came on...

Just massively pleased they got the 3 points for CP, who must've gone grey tonight.

    Onwards...

I had the pleasure of being at the back of J block with the choir tonight. We all gave it our all, and quite a few of us left the ground with very sore throats! A massive effort by these boys on the drums, kept us going all night. Well in lads!! image
  • Absolutely mental game. Mental.
  • Rollercoaster of a game. At 0-2 I was fearing another drubbing, but kudos to the Covered End, the noise was excellent tonight. Thought everyone worked really hard tonight for CP, they had something to prove and did so. Haynes looked quick and dangerous, and more importantly, hungry. Once we started to look dominant he was going to score. Stephens was excellent tonight, Kerkar was too, Solly and Pritch worked non-stop, though I think Pritch was starting to flag at the end. Morro back to his usual confident self. Hulse looked a threat and took his goal well. Couldn't see CP from where I was (Family) so no idea about his body language. What did look iffy was hamer not coming out with the others and being first back in. Does he normally do that and I haven't noticed?

Sloppy at the end but who cares, just really pleased to see us win (first win I've seen this season, it's been a wait....)
  • Emotional night. Thought the players dug really deep for the Manager and the crowd played their part too.
Some simply terrible defending on both sides, but some decent finishing on show too and the only thing that really matters tonight is that we got one more than them.
A game that will live long in the memory and hopefully the turning point in our season.

  • Fantastic result. 5 goals at home against the league leaders and their multi-million pound squad. And I'm delighted to see that the boys held up an old Charlton tradition by trying to throw it away at the end. In all seriousness I'm disappointed with the end as we've lost that goal difference we built up and we can hardly rely on a three goal cushion to see games out, but there's no point in quibbling over what is a huge win for us.

Top marks nolly. Think we've found a new Valley Floyd Road

do you really think goal difference is going to shape our season? i'll settle for 50 points and -80 gd
  • Well if Powell had 4 games before Leeds

    Away leeds Draw
    away wolves Draw
    Home against 2nd Loss
    Home against top Win

I would say he has got a good return from those 4 games

Just what Mr F said, nla.

And all top teams ...at least on paper .

  • Having pace up front made such a difference, as whereas before we were hoofing it up to static strikers, tonight we could hit over the top to a pacey striker, who ran a quality defence and keeper ragged

Poor guy. That's spoiled my evening.

That's why we go to football. Wonderful team performance.

Yes but bet there were a few heart stopping moments at the end!

    Well done.
  • Still buzzing. So happy. If we had lost tonight I really think Powell was a goner and at 0-2 I was so depressed. Not what I would do (I would give Powell a 10 year contract) just think Jiminez would have pulled the trigger. Luckily I don't have to think about that any more!!

Its a funny old game !!

After 20 mins and 2-0 down I don't think anyone would have been surprised if we went on to lose by 5 or 6, but the Covered End carried on singing and it not only got through to us in the East but to the players as well. I turned to my dad after 35 mins and said "if we can just get 1 back before half time we've got half a chance" - but I didn't bank on JJ being the "Johnny in the box" and I didn't want the half to end..................

2nd half we were a different team - everyone wanted the ball and when they got it all they wanted to do was to go forward, Just seen the goals on Sky and shame they dont show the build up for the 5th (did i really type a 5 there ???) as it was pure class. At 5-2 I was in heaven, but me being Golfie I knew we wouldn't get a 6th (never seen us score more than 5) but didn't had no worries and would have put all my wordly goods that we would see it out -but my Mum has seen it all and on 81 mins she was still saying " well that's 9 plus another 3 for injuries - they can still score 3 in 12 mins" ..............little did we kmow that they had another 3 mins on top !! (the 6 mins added time is a thread in itself) Only at 5-4 did I start to wobble and if they had equalised I swear I would have run onto the pitch & throttled the ref !!!

special mentions for Solly & Morrisson - both out of position but solid throughout. Also to JJ who I thought had his best game this season & shows that if he is pushed further upfield he may just score. Also saw the confidence come flooding back to Stephen's boots once he scored and i;m actually glad we went 2-0 down as it forced CP to change to a 4-4-2 and Haynes then became a threat (why was he on the right wing for the first 20 mins - what a waste)

final mentio to the fans (esp the Covered End) - our 12 man tonight and Big Dave was right WE KNEW WHAT WE HAD TO DO & WE DID IT !!!!!!!

I'm now off to down a big bowl of humble pie...............

  • Am _SO_ glad I looked at the result on the Beeb website before looking at the match thread, cos I think I would have had a coronary reading that. Well done guys (both the team and the lads and lasses supporting them tonight)
