If SCP leaves on his own accord to get a better job, then good luck to him. If the 'fans' want to hound him out now then that's bang out of order and incredibly shortsighted.

No one is hounding him out ffs. To the "fans" threatening to with draw their support for The Club if he is sacked. THAT'S shortsighted!
  • I too respect and like CP and really appreciate the job he has done at the club but this is a fans forum and as such different opinions will surface now and again, we can disagree but generally it isn't personal. Do I want CP to stay? 100% yes Do I think he's been unfortunate with injuries etc.? 100% yes however do I think he has some areas of his management where he can improve? 100% yes as nobody is perfect.
  • I'm backing Cp 100% as well. Is it a fact his job is in danger or just rumours?
  • and of course like everthing and anyone SCP is open to criticism , why anyone thinks they/he wouldn't be (our better halves excepted) open to criticism i find a bit strange
  • he has my 100% backing even if we were relegated. However, we are not the one's he has to convince. He was effectively appointed by the old guard (PV,SK) and I very much doubt TJ and MS knew very much about him. If they are looking for an opportunity to offload him then that may come quite soon. No doubt there would be uproar but I doubt they really care very much at all but do care about us not being relegated.

If we stay up the yes he'll have done his job, if we go down then I'm afraid that would be a failure, even allowing for the limited budget he may have had when compared with some of the teams in the division. Being able to get 100% (110%?) out of your resources, and beating the odds is what makes you a great manager. Lennie worked miracles to keep us in the top flight, keeping us in the Chamionship shouldn't be as hard as that.
  • Anyone who was at saturdays game and thinks Powell should go, has no right attending a football match.
And if the board think that by sacking Powell (if they are considering this) when he has been given bugger all money, 4 key players out injured, then they have no right running a football club and they will fail big time.

I posted this on another thread.

It wasnt that bad, in this league more than any other IMHO its about small margins, if Pritch had put that header away in the 3rd minute, Wilson had not got injured, then we would be patting ourselves on the back after a comfortable win.
The changes made by Powell were enforced through injury and then one of our most reliable players made an error, Powell took the bull by the horns and had to be proactive, we had a lot of possession when we went 352, Kerker couldnt cross the road on Saturday. In other games he has been praised for his crossing. The only negative I can aim at Powell was putting JJ on the left, we all know he cant play wide left and not putting Green on the right after Wilsons injury.

We have 4 first team players out injured, Powell has been given sod all money to spend, our team was a make do and mend team, the same will apply tomorrow.

BTW the worst display I have ever seen by Charlton was away at Daggers last season, Powell turned that around, he will do the same again!

Just out of interest, when do you think would be a right time to replace the gaffer? If and when it does happen, it sounds like some of you will ditch the club and follow him? What would you do if he left of his own accord for a better job? Football is a cut throat business and while its nice to be loyal, I don't think it always works both ways.......

Id say if we were adrift by Jan then that would be the time to look, but for now, considering the lack of investment, number of key injuries and a sprinkling of bad luck most fans should and will still back him. Haven't yet seen 1 in this thread who hasn't

I don't agree with this. I am confident that I know very little about managing a football team when compared to the professionals, but I wouldn't have done much differently to what CP has done this season. I can't comment for the coaching that goes on at the training ground, and maybe (and I only say maybe because I don't know) the players could have been developed more, but I have agreed with most, if not all, of the decisions he has made up to know.

Some of his acquisitions (or whom ever made the decisions) have been outstanding. I can't think of one player (and this isn't a challenge for someone to name one) that we have signed that has failed to make a contribution that has been worthy of his signature - ignoring players that have been signed as cover in positions where the first choice has stayed fit.

If we are at the bottom of the table in January then I would be, personally, inclined to believe it's due to the lack of resources for squad building. I'm not looking to point the finger at anyone for this, I know we would need a generous 'gift' from someone to fund this, but if we only have a bottom three squad then we all have to accept that bottom three is where we deserve to be.

For the above reasons I would want to stick with Powell and hope that he can get sufficient luck with injuries and randomness to secure enough points to keep us in this division this season and see if we can improve next season.

Interestingly a lot of our wins last season were close. Sixteen of our thirty wins last season were by one goal. This season we have lost six games and five of them have been by one goal. That suggests that we might have been expecting a bit much this season without new signings.
  • I want CP to stay on and learn his trade - I firmly believe he will go on to succeed as a manager. The main issue is whether the board will stick with him if we remain mired in a relegation battle.
Injuries haven't helped but part of being a manager is having to cope with the resources available however limited they are. It's obvious there a lot of teams in this division with stronger squads but that's just a fact of life.
CP is an inexperienced manager and sadly luck hasn't gone his way this season. A knee jerk reaction from the board would be a disaster as I don't think there are many managers out there who would be doing much better with our current squad and injury list.

  • It's breaking my heart that anyone would want or thinking of wanting Chris Powell out. Why is this even a discussion? What he did for us fans and the club last season puts him up there with the Charlton legends. If the rumours of the board wanting him out are true I don't know what I would do with my season ticket as my soul will have been ripped apart. To me Chris Powell is Charlton Athletic right now and I can't think of anyone else I want to replace him as our manager.
  • Well GreenWithEnvy it's a discussion because this is a fans forum where such things are.....well discussed. What is encouraging is that I didn't read one "Powell out" post so the positive side of this is it confirms that the fans are square behind CP.
  • I had the pleasure of meeting CP at the Ashford shepway supporters meeting.
He is the man to lead this club, and more importantly this squad.
    100% from me.
  • Sorry DaveAddick, my point about why this issue is even a discussion was a rhetorical one. But I am also glad that I haven't read one 'Powell Out' post either.
  • I'm fully behind CP. I don't agree with everything he does but that's not to say what i would do would be any better. We're all experts in hindsight after the final whistle. I do believe he has had to patch things up a bit after plan A (his lined up targets) were binned due to the financial scenarios in the summer so it's a case of making do and mend at the moment. I think we will be ok and i'm sure if he gets the opportunity to properly rebuild the team, he will do a fantastic job like he did last year. Every time they trot out the excuse about Mark hughes and the new players needing time to gel, i think about CP and last season.

Thankfully you missed Choice's thread then, which was closed down.

Mind you that was very predictable, as he only now comes on to rant when we lose.
  • So his views shouldn't be aired?
  • Did miss it Covered End. Don't matter what the situation is you should try to make changes that makes things BETTER and getting rid of CP definitely would not do that. I am four square behind him but hope he is learning from those tactical mistakes when he uses substitutes.
  • They can be aired but there was already a thread discussing Powell (and how long he had left). It was shut down for no other reason.

The fact he never came back to make his point again (as far as I'm aware) is typical of setting a fuse and leaving which has happened before.

He is still a great manager, but he shouldn't have run that black cat over. That is how I feel about this season. The tide will turn and I back him all the way. Would be good if we give him a good song on Tuesday and send the message to everybody that we are behind them.

Confidence has been beaten out of us to a degree and we have a part to play in getting it back. We can win tomorrow - Chrissy Powell's Red and White Army!
  • So his views shouldn't be aired?

Certainly not all of them :-)
  • CP getting the sack would see me take a break from Football as for me personally it would be much worse then the years in the 3rd tier with Parky as manager as despite having to play teams like Hartlepool/Rochdale/Yeovil in the league, it still felt like the Charlton i fell in love with during the 90s as a kid, after losing PV & RE and what i have assumed is minimum input by RM, the loss of CP as manager would be to much, as im not happy supporting a club run by people who think the only way to move forward is to rip the soul out of it.

I would much rather get my football fix if needed from a local non league side until the Charlton i love is back in the hands of people who really care about what it means to be Charlton.

I just hope in the nearish future we see a sale to new owners and the return of people like Rick to where they belong which is moving this club forward in the right way.
  • An entire thread, droning on about a 'debate' that doesn't actually exist. I haven't seen or heard a single 'Powell out' comment, tweet, post or chant.
People just love an opportunity to spout off about how they support the club more than everyone else.

    'I love SCP 100%!'
    'Well I'm behind him 110%!'
'Well I love Charlton more than both of you, and we shouldn't ever sack Chris Powell!'
'Sack Chris Powell? Who said that? Oh my God!
'Anyone that says we should sack SCP is an idiot!'
    'Yeah, Keep Chris Powell!'

    Give me strength.

If you really want to silence the 'Powell out' brigade (that don't exist), maybe just turn your overactive imaginations to something else?
  • can we hold lighters up at say 20.10 hours tuesday and all in unison whisper Powell think it will show we care

  • lol,all jokes aside it would be nice and deserved
