  • SCP is irrelevant to the story, but suppose we get relegated, 15 points below the 2nd bottom team, with massive splits in the team, playing terrible football. Would fans really walk out on Charlton if SCP was sacked in those circumstances?

    No of course not.

Nor is that going to happen, so long as the Board let CP get on with managing, and with a budget that might be lets say the 14th highest in the division.

    That really is the point.

I've no expectation of it happening, just pointing out that SCP isn't a God with a job for life, and there may come a time when it sadly becomes necessary to relieve him of his duties, like RM did to Gritty in 1995. Alternatively, he may leave to take over at another club anyway!
  • Why would you want to be Chairman for that bunch of ***** !

Maybe soon it won't those bunch of ***** but another bunch?
  • What were people's view on Powelly when we finished in one of our lowest positions after he took over when we were in a play off position. When he was then subsequently backed substationally by the board? Very thin dividing line, IMHO football is fickle as are fans we all know this.

I for one backed him very vocally; without wishing to rehash old themes, we would never have stayed in that position even if Fergie had taken over, and for those of us who wanted to see it was quite obvious Powell was trying to make a silk purse out of a sow's ear. Back him and see what happened.

Are we saying SCP is going to be sacked? No. Are we saying that the board may be allowing personal issues to cloud their thinking about SCP's long term value to our club? I think so. I'm led to believe he had to defend his position even last season, and there will be more opportunity for the board to act this.
  • Worrying times indeed, rikofold.
  • Wyn Grant has just wrote an interesting piece on this
  • This may be the article refered to;-

'The Paul Elliott story has, I understand, just being mentioned by Richard Keys on TalkSport in a discussion with a journo about racism in sport. It was suggested that his appointment might be tokenism.

This is the problem with the way in which this story is perceived in the media. To most Addicks, Paul Elliott is a respected former player who has continued doing important community work. Much of that is directed at racism, but people do not think of him in terms of the colour of his skin but what he has achieved.

Further checking has led me to believe that the Paul Elliott story arose from someone in the club talking to the Mirror journalist. It is not my belief that this person was Rick Everitt, now on his bike in the Isle of Thanet, contrary to suggestions elsewhere. I think that what happened was that someone let the cat out of the bag too quickly. That of itself might make it more difficult to proceed. But whilst I do not think it will happen in the immediate future, Elliott's appointment as executive chair remains an option.'

  • If Elliott is appointed after Slaters statement then i have to say to the Board " you don't know what your doing"

If his name was sheikh Paulo Elliott would we get a bit more excitable?

    Quote

An Italian Arab eh ? Now that would be a real Sheikh up !
  • Is it true he was interviewed about the racial shenaniggans on SSN yesterday and the interviewer also asked him about the CAFC chairman job?

He has basically just said he is very interested in becoming Charlton Chairman on Sky.
  • speaks very well and a lot of sense in general.
  • Still think there is legs in this story
  • seemed to suggest Charlton are his team. understand he lives locally too. move by Jimenez to appease fans?
  • Still think there is legs in this story

That was obvious when Slater started waxing lyrical about him.

  • From what I gather, Slater is in place to protect Cash's.......er, cash, and won't be going anywhere until cash finds a new buyer. So surely no change until then?

Then there's the question of new investors might not want Elliott, or anyone else come to that. A new investor might want to sit on his own throne.

But, like most things, I'm probably miles off..................................
  • Still think there is legs in this story

Careful, NSS and Southend Addick will be demanding a source : - )

The question for me is not if he was asked but who asked him?
  • Agree with nla in that I think this still has legs. It's obvious to me at least that Slater won't be Chairman much longer and it's also obvious that JIminez doesn't want the profile that comes with that position. A non investment Chairman to act as a figurehead fits that scenario and in my opinion would add strength to the view that TJ is getting stronger control on the club.

  • I think there are legs in the story and it wouldnt surprise me if one of two others came in as well. What I dont understand are the negative vibes and why it means TJ is gaining more control. Surely the gripe amongst fans is that there is not enough info between Club and supporters and the board are too distant. Perhaps they are listening and doing something about it?.

I realise that wont sit comfortably with the doom mongers.
  • I was surprised how open he was on the Footballers Football show last night.I suspect that guests will brief the presenter about subjects that would be out of bounds so this was clearly up for discussion.

He made no effort to deny the rumour ,on the contrary as I said in my quick post above he seemed to imply that he was very interested.

He mentioned his existing involvement in the community work and sang the praises of SCP who he described as a friend,I agree with jamescafc that Paul implied that we were a club close to his heart ,my one concern which is probably irrational is that he referred to Charlton as 'they' and not 'we'.
  • If SCP and him are friends maybe he is there to bridge the gap between TJ and SCP.

I'm sure NSS and Southend will demand you reveal your source but I believe you : - )

Personally I haven't got any negative vibes about Elliot being Chairman but then I'm not a doom monger just a concerned supporter. I think he brings a lot to the table and wish him all the best if and when he signs up.

If it is the first step to the board being more open than they have been then that is a good thing, in my opinion.

Still leaves a lot of questions unanswered though including why do we need a Paul Elliot for the board to communicate more?

Slater and Jimenez could both communicate more as could Prothero. Why do we need a new Chairman at all as Slater is still around and said he was here for the long term? What, if anything, has changed?

Will one of the "one or two others" joining be a new full time CEO? Who is she/he and why has it taken so long to fill the post when Kavanagh's departure was part of a "planned restructure" in the summer?

  • Can I vote that quote of the week?

  • Perhaps he's being brought in to do the CAFC player commentary ;-)

In the directors box, PE chatted with TJ but not MS. I agree with Henry Irving that the question is not if he was asked but who asked him. Unless he's doing a double bluff thing, based on what I saw and the o'er hasty denial from MS, I'll go with him having been asked by TJ. If PE is good friends with SCP and if PE becomes the public and accessible face of CAFC, then I would see that as positive. But who's going to bring us some dosh?

Re not going if SCP was fired, it's unimaginable - but I will say this. Toward the end of Pardew's reign I found myself becoming almost apathetic at what was happening on the pitch. One game I couldn't bring myself to celebrate a goal because I could foresee the inevitable capitulation that followed. That shocked me.

Last year - and the season before actually - SCP reinvigorated my passion again. I got my Charlton back. Losing SCP would be a big blow to that.

Pardew was a popular Charlton player appointed following demands from the fans: so the difference here is that the team was playing well. That's the difference and that what will ultimately determine whether most fans feel "connected" to the club or not. The board stuck with Powell after a disastrous first period in charge - in which he made a Parky team worse - there's absolutely no reason to believe he's under any threat at all. Other departures from the club are not people that were appointed by them.

I say concerned supporter, you say doom monger, lets call the whole thing off : - )

  • I agree. If TJ wanted to sack him he had the perfect opportunity then.

Others would say that Varney was around to protect CP then and TJ had a smaller shareholding but personally I'm not convinced by the dead man walking view points. Just my opinion though, no source : - )
