  • Stats don't paint the full picture...they were all over us second half.

Anyway its a been a bit of a misunderstanding, I thought when you said 'I could have got involved last night with a poster on here who was bemoaning the fact that we should've beaten a 19th placed team.' you were talking about me. But looking back on our conversation I've realised it clearly couldn't have been! Sorry buddy.

I notice you have decided to have a run in with someone else on another thread having a bad day? I realise now it was all my fault persuading you to go to yesterday's match when you really didn't want to after the Notts County home game. I promise to let you make your own mind up in future so that you don't have to wallow in the disappointment of yet another poor showing of our beloved team who get played of the park by a lowly placed team who only manage 50% of the possession during the game. My, my................. I need a drink badly.
  • ah so you were wrong with your comment. apology accepted!
  • A point yesterday is good and three on tuesday will be brilliant. Its all about psychology now and bwp has started to score again and that is wonderful news because regardless of the result yesterday it means we are a stronger side all over the pitch. We will play well on Tuesday and that was the blip all finished with. Lets get behind them with no booing please.

In your dreams Mike it's no good splitting hairs if we are played off park which we weren't incidentally, as I've disproved by an independent source or the fact that we couldn't beat a lowly placed team fighting for their lives in their own back yard. Anyway this is Nathan's fault who started all this with his informative post match view that 'it was sh*t' when it wasn't in my humble opinion.

    Sorry.
You haven't done anything wrong but if Mike has asked you to say it on his behalf I accept.
  • ha fat chance
  • Just say sorry.
  • I have only seen 7 away games this season from MK Dons to Scunny yesterday but I haven't noticed much difference in effort, desire or commitment in the players. What I have noticed is how teams are up for the challenge against the runaway leaders and possibly one or two tired legs and minds in our side. I could have got involved last night with a poster on here who was bemoaning the fact that we should've beaten a 19th placed team. I'm sorry no team has got the devine right to beat anybody irrespective of their legue position it's all about performances on the day and Scunthorpe were a match for us. Charlton teams of the past would have folded yesterday and this current one didn't, I should know I have seen enough of them over the last 50+ years. Another poster said it was a sh*t match, no it wasn't because any neutral would have enjoyed the 'match up' between top and bottom and all sorts of weird results get thrown up between such teams at the business end of the season. Had Waggy converted that sitter late in the 2nd half I wonder, just wonder what the reaction would have been daylight robbery a la Bournemouth or another professional ground out win away from home..........hmmm. I'm no rose tinted glasses man but I am confident that this group, management and players who have had a little wobble of late will build on yesterdays result and see us over that finishing line starting with 3 points on Tuesday night. The last thing they need right now is for people to start getting on their backs which is counter productive but I have no doubt the moans and groans will be ringing out if it doesn't quite go to plan v Yeovil.
Another old bugger like myself heh, quite agree with what you are saying. Tuesday is not the be all of the season either. We have had our best results against the top sides, no surprise to me as the teams at the top try to play football - and we are better at it. Not boasting - results show this to be true. I think we are more likely to get three points against Hud than the Glovers.
It is a long time since I have gone to games expecting to win, this team is special at this league because they appear to be in it together. Hamer was getting all sorts of abuse recently but looking at player markings he was m.o.m.! Will be one of our 'greats' in my opinion. Not since Dean have I seen such great instictive saves. He will get better and better.
The abuse of Waggy also seems bizare. One of our own and those who complain of his 'moaning', should have seen Robertson in action. I do not call it moaning; I call it passion.
I would suggest that we as supporters need to follow his example - moan at every foul or maybe foul, scream for every penalty possability, every iffy throw in, every maybe corner. Waggy should not be a loan voice on the field; it should be supported by 17,000 other voices to help drive us out of this shit league.

Went to this game hoping that Charlton would turn around the recent poor form and get a victory that would see us cruise to the title. I didn't happen.

Whilst there was passages of decent football, all too often the ball was launched long. Scunthorpe are a big, strong, physical side and our approach seemed to play to their strengths.

A nicely taken goal. Solly and Wagstaff linked up well, and Hamer won us the point with several good saves in the second half.

Thompson for Scunthorpe had clearly been told to stand round the keeper at corners and free kicks. This meant his marker (Solly) had to do likewise. To Hamer's credit, this did not seem to affect him. On at least one occasion Hamer took the ball despite Thompson being between him and the ball, perhaps taking the mindset that if he had to clatter Thompson to get the ball, then he would do so.

Of concern might have been the performance of Morrison. Morrison appeared on several occasions to ignore the call of Hamer. He on two occasions he ignored Hamer and then compounded the error by making a further poor decision, one of which lead to the penalty.

For the purposes of discussing what went on between Morrison and Hamer, whether I, Morrison or anyone reading this rates Hamer is irrelevant. Whether Morrison and Hamer get on on a personal level is also irrelevant. When CP makes a decision (in this instance to pick Hamer) then the other players (in this instance Morrison) should respect and trust the decision. Morrison appeared to ignore Hamer, when Hamer was better placed to make a decision.

To his credit Morrison finally listened to Hamer and let Hamer collect the ball, perhaps indicating the problem is not that great. I am prepared to give Morrison the benefit of the doubt and write this off as a below par performance on his part. On the whole this season he has been fantastic.

To return to winning ways, no great changes need to be made. A simple mixture of the beautiful passing football of early season, together with the more direct approach when needed (in this game there was too little of the former and too much of the latter). Come back Mr Hayes. Interchanging Hayes and Kermogant when the occasion suits could make the world of difference.

In summary, no need to panic. Charlton will be promoted as Champions, but it might be a little closer than thought a couple of weeks ago.

A note on our support. Yes, some clubs might have taken more fans, but what we took was quality. Not just in terms of singing but also in terms of encouragement. When BWP could not get on the end of a long ball near the end, a bloke stood up not to berate him but to encourage him.

  • Allegedly Morrison has a rendezvous tomorrow morning with an ear syringe.

    Pardon ?

If they find sponge in one ear and jelly / custard in the other I reckon he must be a trifle deaf...............I'll get my coat.
  • Nice one, Deadred.

    Waxing lyrical indeed...
  • there are some people blind to the fact that we are showing awful form as we come into the run in. i agree keep faith but anything less than a win on tuesday could be destructive with huddersfield on saturday. abysmal the last 4 games including the great bournemouth robbery of 2012. this is a race for automatic promotion as much as it is a race for the title as we have let third close us. not looking forward to tuesday one bit the nerves have begun to set in and i just pray yeovil have a tactical off day as now have no faith we can break them or any team at home down. praying to god i'm wrong and will get behind them as much as i can. this is just the way i feel at the moment.
    This is bang on.
We are not playing well and our game plan is widely known.

    Here is a reality check........

Jacko is carrying a knock and is not the same as he was earlier in the season. I saw in the warm-up yesterday that he plays with a stretch bandage on his calf, and had his foot in ice once he came off yesterday.

BWP has picked up in the last couple of games, but was incredibly lazy since the start of the year. You don't need a genius to tell you that YK is going to win a flick header - so just be ready to run on to it, but he has been unwilling to do this properly IMO.

Hamer - needs to realise he was released by a CCC club and has been standing behind one of the best defences in the league. All that hero stuff has gone to his head and he has made comedy schoolboy errors in recent games.

Stephens - not the same player after coming back from injury.
Wiggy - Prem class, but looking jaded
Hollands - good game at Scunny, first decent game for a while - looking tired.
Green - we need to play to his strengths and he will develop.

Having said that, we are still 9 points ahead with 9 games to go.
Three more clean sheets should do the trick.
BWP has been anything but lazy ... He was still busting a gut getting into goal scoring positions even though he couldn't hit a barn door ...

    STOP Panicking everyone ...
  • We only drew against the 19th placed team. Sheff W just beat a team that hammered us and they played them at there place. We have really got to step up. Think the Wendies are now the ones to watch.
My memory may deceive me, but i'm sure i was at the first away game of the season and if i remember rightly, we also beat County at their place and Colchester and Bury and Rochdale and Sheff Utd and Wycombe and Hartlepool and Brentford and Yeovil and Wednesday and Exeter and Chesterfield and Bournemouth.

I was disappointed at Scunthorpe as was everyone else, but i'll be at Huddersfield, Oldham, Carlisle and Preston. I can't understand the negativity on here. If supporting Charlton away can get better than this i'll be a happy man!
  • Truly the worst referee I've ever seen and Wagstaff's miss in the 69th was unbelievable. Having said that, it was my 4 year old lads first Charlton game and he loved it.
  • we re twitchy and thats looks like a point well earned... they bossed it from the sound and look of it ..

A great finish from BWP really nice strike..

A win on Tuesday and we are well on our way ...

  • just see the highlights on player and we had some decent chances the best a fluff by waggy but a very decent cross by him for the goal , some people said solly and waggy combined well for the goal but i didnt see solly involved in that build up
hamer made a couple of reasonable stops

when you see a penalty by a team in front of opposition fans you usually a decent number of fans jumping up and down waving arms about and doing all sorts of lunatic things to put the penalty taker off but not us , well done for making the trip but come on at least try and put him off ..... limp

edit .... duped cos of new set up slowness
  • One difficulty I see is the intense and bitter rivalry between the two Sheffield Clubs who are now level on points, and have all the motivation they need at a time when we are looking frankly sloppy. Letting Clarke go on loan for the rest of the season, might be a sign that we are about to unleash one or two of the youngsters, perhaps Sho Silva. Yann at the moment looks to me more like an attacking midfielder, perhaps some tactical changes might wake us up for the run in. This week will be enormous for us, COYR.

Thanks for that post, Gramps, but hunker down and await the inevitable flack from Off_it .....

  • Oohaah - there was a guy dancing backwards and forwards behind the goal with his shirt up and a large belly wobbling about when the penalty was about to be taken, the stewards stopped him. At least he tried!
  • ha ha fair play to him

The rivalry between the Sheffield clubs is irrelevant. Are you seriously suggesting either club would not be 100% challenging for promotion but for the rivalry?

As for the comment about the week being enormous, come on, even if we lose both games (which we will not) we will still be top of the league. Now is a time for calmness, where is that Blitz spirit that got your generation through the war.

The penalty was taken by an experienced player, who not only has played in a lot of games but routinely has to put up with opposing fans calling him the overweight progeny of an unmarried mother (slightly rephrased for sensitive readers). It is extremely unlikely that he would be put of by a few people waving their arms.

Mike to say they were all over us is complete bollox....maybe they had a slight edge....but it could have gone either way.
