I am amazed that anyone would class Hayes as being shit. He hasnt been great recently but i think that could be down to Yann's arrival and good form...bit of a confidence blow to Hayes.
some of the cack that has played for us the last 3 or 4 seasons, especially upfront, some fans are quick to forget what a shit footballer really looks like.
Hayes and Waggy don't look like they're suited to each other, but it was their first game as a partnership up front. Same with Evina and Wiggins, probably too similar but they've barely played together. Remember BWP and Kermorgant struggled to link up in their first start.
Second game as a partnership up front. They played in our league cup game together. Were pretty awful as a partnership in that one, too.
You're right it was their second game together. Having a quick look it was the JPT game, probably the worst team performance of the season.
I don't think they are suited to each other but still they have barely played alongside each other. Some were saying it shows Waggy can't play up there, but there have been games in which he played well in that position (maybe more behind a striker though)
I like Paul Hayes and he did well for us earlier in the season. Certainly a good squad player. However, I think it is since Big Yann has come into the team that our performances have gone up another level. Look at our results/performances since Stevenage and you'll see it coincides with him coming along. I think he brings so much more to the team and opens things up for whoever else is playing up there with him. CP could obviously see this and that's why he brought him in. On this form he would be my nomination for Player of the Season but a bit early yet. :-)

Thing is i dont think hayes was any better before be Yann arrived.
Hayes is good at laying the ball off, and that has helped us this season. His footballing mind
BUT
He lacks pace, isnt much of a threat in the air at all and his first touch and ball control is unacceptable at this level.
He wastes really good opportunities as well, he'l redeem himself my pulling of a classy flick to someone soon after, but these wasted chances could hurt us later in the season.
Hes not good enough to start and if we go up, questionable seeing him in the squad.
Hayes hasn't been great recently for the same reason Darren Bent didn't look good for Spurs. Getting 10-15 mins at the end of a match, with a start every 5 games or more hardly lets you build your form up. He's a good player who has moments of excellence and moments where his touch completely leaves him - so a League One footballer then. We're just as top now as we were when he played so worrying isn't really necessary. As others have said though it would be good to get a back-up for BWP in January. I think we've used the loan market well so far so I wouldn't mind a short term deal for a player in the mold of Simeon Jackson, but a good value deal for a poacher would complete our squad too
Granpa - I do view the markings allocated by many on here but you misunderstand "my broader view" these markings are still just a snapshot of a given performance. They may offer a concensus view of that performance but it is too narrow a basis for an overall assessment of a players ability especially if you do not take into account the background to that performance.
Pardew apart do you really think managers buy players based on just 3 appearances.
I do take exception with the practice many seem to follow of taking 2 or 3 performances and extending that assessment to describe a players overall abilities particularly when career statistics clearly challenge such interpretation.
There are people still of the opinion the earth is flat. I believe there is evidence to the contrary
I happen to agree Hayes is currently less effective (there is not a player on the planet who does not have a bad game or lose form) than he was earlier in the season I suggest largely because he is no longer a regular member of the side.
It is a team game but individuals perform better when others play to their strengths. To do so players need to develop an understanding by regularly playing together within a competitive match situation. It is not necessarily a concious thing, intelligent players develop a natural read of a players movement, how/ where he wants the ball and then where they move to support (very relevant in final 1/3rd of the pitch).
If you don't believe me about the difficulties of being a "fringe" player read the Kermorgant interview about the difference between his time at Leicester and now.
The difference between the 2 halves v Carlisle provides even clearer evidence of the challenge when after the break notably Pritchard & Cort settled into the game. Hayes and Wagstaff still struggled. It happens.
I have read many daft comments about Euell, Hughes and even Russell and Ephraim (who have barely had 2 games between them) but in the case of Hayes if someone seriously thinks a series of qualified professionals, many with decades in the game are going to professionally employ for 10yrs someone who has less skill than a bunch of schoolboys someone is either a) on a wind up b) seriously deluded about their football knowledge c) a flat earth society member
People are entitled to express their opinions (doing my FA badges at Bisham Abbey in 1971 I was told never just dismiss any opinion - it may have value) but any idea, one cannot then comment on that opinion, is very odd. Double standards?
Hayes is a forward. BWP and Kermorgant are strikers. I think Hayes would work well in a fdont 3 with these two either side of him, he'd add something to their games. The only other way he works is with BWP, as they had the first games together of this season building an understanding. If we were to go with a 4-3-3 next game (not saying this is likely at all) I'd go with: Hamer Solly Taylor Morrison Wiggins Green Hollands Ephraim BWP Hayes Kermorgant I think that team would do a great job.
What would be the point, we'd probably be overun in midfield & you'd be pushing BWP & Kermo wide while having a central striker / forward whatever you want to call him who finds it difficult to control the ball or score ?
Have to admit I've never rated him & still don't ........at the same time couldn't see why we signed Hughes but think he's done a great job in the absence of Stephens
Hayes has the vision of a premiership player. Sometimes he has the touch and execution of a premiership player too. However the rest of the time he has the touch and execution of a Sunday league pub player which is why he is in league 1.
Overall he is doing an excellent job for us as his assist record confirms. Whether he can do it at a higher level is open to debate but let's get to that higher level before we worry about that.
At the moment he is an integral member of our table topping squad and doing a fine job.

I think that team would do a great job.
You are weakening the midfield and giving them too much to do and too much ground to cover, consequently you are turning three attacking midfielders into three defensively minded midfielders.
Having Hughes sitting in front of the back four allows Hollands to get further forward.
We've lost one league game all season and since that defeat have won the last eight games scoring 24 goals while conceding three, and yet you want to change a winning formation?

Don't think Dazzler was saying we should change our formation, he was just using 4-3-3 to illustrate a way that Hayes differed from Kerm and BWP ina different formation, never suggested we use it.

Hayes wouldn't be in each and every matchday squad if Powell didn't think he had the ability to contribute to the team effort.

He even said it wasnt likely.
