So 100 years ago the pressures included no social security, no job security, no free health care, disease far more likely to kill or maim you, high infant death rates, no toleration of illegitimacy or homosexuality, the work house, limited old age pensions, poverty or the need to keep up appearances, divorce unavailable to nearly all.
What are the equivalent pressures from today?
100 years ago our upbringing and values were totally different. You knew what you had and got on with it. TV, Radio and now the internet has provided the added pressure to some of what life could be. There may have been little financial support years ago but communities looked after each other much more than they do now which helped to deal with life.
Did they? Why did we have workhouses then?
Communities didn't look after single mothers (who were sometimes locked up as "mad"), if you were gay you didn't tell anyone and it was a criminal offence and the mentally ill were hidden away.
Still not sure how TV and the internet have caused equivalent pressures. There was pressure then to "keep up appearances especially for the middle class. There was fashion and trends too. Close communities also force people to fit in whether they like it or not.
Never heard of the coalmining communties then? the most close knit communties i have ever encountered who risked their lives every single day just to survive and when somebody was ill or widowed had help from their neighbours immediately.
So just mining communities didn't suffer from stress. What about the rest.
Firstly depression is an illness now and it was an illness then. It hits people regardless of the community they live in Yes, people did help each other but not if you were an outsider and it was much harder to move away.
If you did you were alone in a big unfriendly city like London. Have a read of Dickens to see how supportive society was then.
You still haven't said what these pressures are that TV and the internet put on us?

Media, in all of their forms, can pressure or influence our actions, beliefs, values, opinions and ideas. For many people, their ideas about the world are based on what they see, hear or read in the media. For example, a television series may portray a certain type of family as 'normal', and lead many people to think that this is the way families should be even though often the families on TV shows are a fantasy. Although we may know that we don't act or live this way, we may still feel pressured to be more like the family on the television. Some media play a significant role in socialising children, and forming their ideas about the world. Besides their own family, children's views can be strongly affected by television and the internet. <?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-com:office:office" />
The internet is a powerful form of media. People spend many hours in front of the computer each day; socializing, reading, playing games etc. The internet is not controlled by media organisations so there is a lot of freedom. This freedom means there is also lots of dodgy information, abusive content, and opportunities for predators to access people they wish to abuse. Is this not pressure for parents?? Let alone the child themselves. In a nutshell the point is that reality of life is slowly ebbing away as TV & the internet takes us to another world which is mostly fantasy and to some this causes a major conflict of their mind and lose grip on how to deal with life. If this is happening to our children now how many of them in 20 or 30 years won’t be able to understand the real world and render them mentally ill. Is this a pressure nowadays for parents, hell yeah!
Charles Dickens died in 1870 and most of his novels were written about life in the early to middle 1800's. We are talking 100 years ago right? I had grandparents who were alive then and whilst some of society was Dickensian in 1911 etc the world had changed from his perception so no comparison.
But it was closer to Dicknes time (and values) that today.
I agree on the pressures on people from TV and the other media but those existed 100 years ago. There was a a thriving and very influential print media and other pressures from organised religious groups in 1911. Same pressures then as now, just a different media.
Child abuse existed in 1911 and perhaps was easier and more likely to be covered up or victims ignored if they said anything (we only have to read the reports of abuse in children's homes and in the catholic church to realise that.
Sorry but I don't think children have difficulty realising what is real and what is not anymore than children who grew up watching TV in the 60s, going to the pictures in the 30s or reading penny dreadfuls in 1911.
true. My son does and all his (male) friends do too and so do many of the adults on here. Are there any proven links to increased violence as a result of this.
On the other hand children used to play "war" and then and now fight each other and other groups of boys. Children used to read about war and violence, now they play games on a PC. Does that add more stress to their lives?

The rest of us were discussing the causes and reasons for suicide in a rational and sensible way.

Children play violent computer games
