  • Since Hayes and Wagstaff have been dropped to the bench with Green and Kermorgant coming into the team, the passing game that SCP has talked up so much seems to have gone and replaced with hoofball. Tranmere closed the back four down quickly from the start of the game so Hamer had to kick all game. At Stevenage Hamer had no out ball, with the back four closed down again, meaning Hamer has hardly thrown the ball out for two games which means hoofball which is a leveller.

If I can see this it must be obvious because I usually spot nothing and have to have tactics explained to me.

  • Quilted coats, this year's must have item.

  • Stop saying green's a rubbish player, it's embarrassing quite frankly. He's a good player, he's just playing badly right now or not gelling.
  • I thought Stevenage was something out of The Hills Have Eyes.

I'm not saying who was to blame because I don't want to get involved to be honest but today has honestly out me off taking my son. Quite sad really.
  • You'll be doing your son a favour
let's face it it's pure blind loyalty that we're still following this crap
There is no rhyme or reason to it, it's pure madness and we're addickted

I remember when football was fun...
Honestly, anyone would think we were Plymouth fans the way we've reacted.
    One loss.
    ONE.

    C'mon Addicks, thats a gift!

Finally somebody said it! It's one thing to travel to another ground and feel aggrieved at the way the team played. I'm disappointed and I couldn't even make the trip. 13 games, top of the league, and one loss. Right now I feel far more disillusioned with our fans than the team, partly due to the fact that the team has managed to do so well. CP rolled the dice in the last two games, I wouldn't be surprised if he sticks with this team against Carlisle. Who can blame him? On paper it's our strongest XI (I imagine Solly will get his place back, he should). Muttley: there are posters who are being fickle, I don't expect a CP love-in, but the man has done well (two manager of the month nominations...two months into the season), don't get me wrong his isn't untouchable, but to demand a result against Carlisle or answers concerning today's changes is too reactionary. To have what some might consider the audacity to drop Solly, for me, took balls...and I like a manager with errr, yeah.
  • Firstly there is little comparison between Wimbledon's playing style & Stevenage's! If anyone, including Powell, thinks Stevenage were really physical then they didn't see Wimbledon or Cambridge United. Stevenage were good at the back, they won most of the headers in their own box but then again, so did we. Yes they wasted a bit of time but I've seen Charlton do that too over the years.

I didn't think it was a completely hopeless performance by any means. We've restricted Stevenage to one and a half chances so there doesn't look too much wrong with our defending, Cort & Taylor looked completely at ease and Wiggins has big potential. Overall I thought we looked pretty reasonable in the first half but it was disappointing how we faded late on and didn't seem to put them under much pressure. But if Cort's header goes in then I suspect we would've been more dominant.

Powell clearly wanted extra height at the back so put Morrison in but the threat never really came. On balance, we missed Solly's energy, especially in the second half when we needed to be pressing. Wagstaff I'm less sure about although he does offer a goal threat. I think Hayes showed why he isn't really an impact sub when he came on....he didn't jump for one header. We need to get back to what we do best, so Hayes should start the next game but I hope his confidence hasn't been knocked too much by his unfortunate dropping.

The last two games won't be a disaster if Powell learns from them (he will) and sets his team up as 99% of us would expect. This team can still play (technically it is far superior to last year's team) and we get a win against Carlisle next Saturday.

  • Powell out I say, we can't put up with this crap for much longer.

  • "Partnerships all over the pitch" is what Taylor said was important to our success when he sopke at Bromley.

So we breal up nearly all of them. Little wonder that Jackson and Wiggins were one of the few plus points.

Solly and Waggy, Taylor and Morrison, Hayes and BWP. All three pairings broken up by choice.

Stevenage did an effective job on us but we gave them a headstart by choosing to match up to them. Add to that another no show from what are meant to be our creative players (Stephens and Green) and we were dragged down to their level.

Hamer worries me more every time I see him. Totally missed a cross when under no pressure and gifted them a free shot at an open goal. Has to be said that if that had been Elliot he would have been Slaughtered on here and be getting marks of 2 or 3.

Back to basics and back to Hayes, solly and Waggy. This team is still top on merit and can remain so if it and Powell remind themsleves of how they got there.

  • Stevengae had a better shape and closed down far more effectively than CAFC. They were by no means a 'kick and rush' team and at times played some good stuff. Yes, physical at times but for me not in the mould of a Tranmere. I assumed that as Solly was on bench he must have been carrying a knock but to read he was just dropped is incredible! What CAFC may have gained in defending prowess was certainly lost in attack and Morrison looked so uncomfortable as a full back (through no fault of his own). Stevenage proved how effective width was with their constant threat from the full-backs so I think that bon this occasion CP may have got it wrong(?).  He should stick by his principles of playing attractive, to the feet football (as per the lesson MK Dons gave us in the first half the other week).  The players have shown that they are capable of it.
  • Think Henry and others have summed up well the faults in our team selection today, most of the damage was done when the team sheet was handed in.

Didn't enjoy some of the sneaky afters that Stevenage dished out to our players, also didn't enjoy seeing some of our players, particularly Kermo, trying to get people sent off with play-acting.

Officials were poor, and I was annoyed that the full-time whistle was blown a fraction short of 6 minutes after the board went up, with the ball only having been in play for about 3 of those 6 minutes.

Hope supporters show a bit more patience with Green, there is a quality player in there.

Yes, the ref added on 6 minutes for time wasting and then proceeded to allow them to time waste about 50% of the six minutes,...........farcical!

  • Just read this thread and am truly gobsmacked. ONE DEFEAT, that is all. Champions of this league will lose at least 6 games, probably more. It was a crappy game in a crappy league, it happens. An away record of w5 d1 l1 is not too bad, move on. We werent outplayed like in a lot of games last year, the reaction to this result is what matters.
  • so what did our fans do what was so disgraceful ?
  • Have delayed my thoughts till overnight to avoid overreacting.

There is no need to mess about with this team for tactical reasons, they are more than capable of adapting during games.

Solly, Waggy  and Hayes should have started, with Green, Kermit and Cort on the bench.

This was an embarrassing defeat, not just because it was Stevenage, but because we tried to be too clever by playing with 3 CB's and no RB.

Hayes is a good supply route for BWP. He holds up the ball on the ground, as opposed to Kermits flick-ons.
Green has had a couple of poor games in a row now and needs to be benched.
As for dropping Solly !!!!!  (our most improved player), in order to play Cort, forget it.
Cort reminds me of all those dreadful players Parky brought in, who rely on physical size instead of skill.

Next games are Carlisle (in good form) and Wycombe (just hitting form).
Back to the standard team formation please.
  • so what did our fans do what was so disgraceful ?
Without restarting the whole debate some were fighting each other and I don't mean just arguing. Punches being thrown and landing.

As a whole I thought the fans got behind the team and made a good noise and there were few boos. A couple of songss that shouldn't be sung IMHO but TBF didn't get many joiining in.

Was glad fans were singing Waggys name before he came on.
  • totally agree re Hayes, I think BWP likes playing with him, just like Mendonca liked playing initially with Leaburn, then Bright, in our promotion year.

Fighting amongst ourselves aint great but people can sing what they like if you dont like it dont join in.Personally I think all our current songs are shit. The old songs are far better. The Jonnie Jackson song is as bloody embarassing as CAFC
  • Hear "Palace fan hanging on a string", Goodbye horse and a few others clear through Cafc Player whats better than cafc cafc

  • palace fan is a quality song
  • Powell was obviously following the Defence Secretary's "bring a mate to work" example. Can't see a logical reason for breaking up a well organised and competant Back Four to accomodate Cort, who is less mobile than Taylor & Morrison. Solly has been one of the players of the season so far, and Morrison was outstanding in the previous away game. He ain't and never will be a full back.

Oh, and the pattern of play broke down again. No link up play and no penetration on the flanks (apart from Wiggins on the overlap) as it did against Tranmere. Easy to contain.

Why move away from what got us 5 points clear? Perhaps Cort and Kermit were promised places in the starting line-up when they signed.
  • But "wheels on the bus" aint IMHO

A lot of the oldies including Give us a C and Bertie Mee said to
    Bill Shankley got an airing.

As I said atmosphere was good generally

Credit due to Stevenage for their football. I suspect all their players did the job asked of them, and they did work hard, and defended well.

Can't agree with those saying we were awful. I was in the home end and had a good view of our play as we attacked in the first half. We had some good spells in that half and opened them up with no clean efforts on goal. Yann tried to spin acrobatically on one cross in particular, and totally miss-kicked when i expected him to score.

Green and Jackson also got some excellent crosses in but there was no-one to covert. On the whole felt it was obvious that we really missed Solly supporting our wing play. Also accommodating Cort in the side, who had a good game over all, was a mildly disruptive influence through the team.

We kept making chances, so i am not especially worried. Goals will start to flow again- once Powell is sure how he wants to use Hayes and gives him a role. As Simonsen said, have to hope his confidence is not knocked already.  Hollands and Stephens more a worry, and their apparent lack of consistency. Then again, nullify those two as Stevenage did and we are up against it.
  • you say we kept making chances? Did we have one in the first half bar a weak BWP shot?
  • lol swords alive
  • We got in the box several times first half, yes. Nothing came of it of course. If BWP and Cort's chances second half had been converted,we would not have a lot of the gloom on here. Just trying to add a bit of balance :)
  • Were come back with a win sat i reckon but yesterday was appalling. All still rosy imo,all clubs having strange results

Not happy with the performance , but i've definitely seen us play worse , Bury away 1st half , and Dagenham Away last season spring to mind , the only consolations i've got is were still top of the league , last year we lost 4-0 at home to Brighton on my birthday weekend , Sheff Weds lost 5-1 to Stevenage Pub borough, anyone can beat anyone in this league , can't wait to see Huddersfield go on a downer.
