  • in the old days Wimbledon used to regularly beat teams above them - sounds like Stevenage did a Wimbledon on us today
No they didn't. They played better football than us. Simple .
Sure they time wasted and they went to ground to easily but that was up to the ref to stop that and he was too week.
Dint think we lost this because stevenage were like Wimbledon. We lost this because the manager picked the wrong team and that team was just not good enough.
I wasn't referring to the style of football,  I mean the relative reputations of the teams. Stevenage are punching considerably above their weight - look at their 5-1 demolition of Sheffield Wednesday earlier this season. They are the Wimbledon of this years L1.

I think we looked the better team second half but not that much better. They are a small team so if you cant impose yourself on them you deserve to lose which we did. If they were playing say Exeter, on the play you would say a draw would have been a fair result, but we are Charlton and the onus should be on us to impose our qulaity which we failed to do big time.
  • Everybody relax, we'll suffer more than one defeat this season. We were sussed out today, and with an unsympathetic ref we were always going to find it tough (that isn't to say this loss was down to the ref). Stevenage battered Wednesday and were unlucky not to get a draw at Huddersfield last week. Powell and the boys have done good so far, top of the league and a kick up the arse for both.
  • How about v Carlisle:

                                              Hamer

    Solly                    Morrison                 Taylor                   Wiggins

                        Hollands        Stephens        Jackson

    Wagstaff                                                                             Evina

                                               BWP

Wish we had a quality left winger to play in evina's place...

But i think jackson would be utilised in cm as i dont think he is a LM

  • Think that might be better away - would probably have been a better starting eleven today
  • Just play the same team they did against Sheff Utd.
  • i think strange how it is next week is a massive game for Powelly, he over the last 2 weeks has made unforced changes to the team and the results are there for all to see.I wonder if Slater and Jiminez are as confused as me with the changes, I just so baffled that he changed something that wasn't broken it doesn't make sense.

    agreed...

But maybe away games we should play 4-5-1 against temas that want to play dirty slow football as 3 in cm will block anything they want to do. Maybe away we need to play dirty hard working football and save the fancy football for home matches

Nope. We play the way that best suits us, however the opponent plays. Don't try the jack of all trades, be the master of one. Switching it around is what caused today's result.

  • The problem for me is that Stephen's has lost form, Green is not the player he can be and Hayes was losing form before he was dropped. It was qulaity up to which cost us today.

I think Slater & Co will be more than pleased with CP, they won't be as fickle and depressed as many on here are (atleast I hope). Who said Carlisle was a massive game? Are you suggesting that if we were to lose that game then CP might be given the sack? The changes against Tranmere made sense, Kermorgant had scored in the past two - salvaging the draw against MK (Green assist).

    Exactly. Stick to what works.
  • I don't think it's a case of being fickle- it is clear that something has to be sorted out and we are discussing what that is. If you watched today's game there were worrying aspects that need addressing. That's not to say this won't be the kick up the backside we need and a win next Saturday and we can get back on track again.
  • We would've all taken 12 wins from 13 at the start of the season. If you say you wouldn't have... then you're a liar.Let's all be optimists and bounce back. We were going to lose at some point and I am glad it has come now. Back to reality everyone.
  • Unlucky 13 for us again, thought we were pretty poor much of the game and never got going. Apart from the bwp chance he put wide and Corts header we didn't create anything but neither did they to be fair. Couldn't do nothing about their goal which looked to be heading over the stand before the terrible deflection. Thought we missed Hayes link up play again and hope he's brought back in for Carlise. Slightly underwhelmed with danny greens performances so far, early days and he hasn't played much but don't know if he's trying to hard or what, just seems abit off the pace at the moment. Today always had that feel of an upset and even more so after seeing some of the score predictions flying about....
  • We were going to lose at some stage it's just the performances that are a worry.we were inept today. Huddersfield will run away with this league.

I'm not suggesting he be sacked, but imho he has made big mistakes tinkering with things that didn't need changing. He has made something simple complicated.Unless there were injuries which there wasn't the team should not have been changed. I am not a massive Stephens fan and think he cantantly goes missing in games, if anybody needed dropping I would start there.

  • Huddersfield will lose at some stage too. Just because they're 38 games unbeaten (ignoring the play-off final) doesn't mean they won't lose form. I just hope we regain form. I reckon we will.
  • And I agree with northstandsteve... Stephens goes missing a lot. When the teams playing well, he is playing well but he only really plays well when the team plays well. The only problem is, who can replace him? Pritchard is injured and Alonso/Hughes/Jacko aren't as attacking and we do need that.

  • Will probably become the norm, people just trying to kick us of the pitch.
    Our lot cant handle it.

with regards to solly being small in the other thread, hasnt affected him all season, hes been one of our best players despite his height, stick with him, cant drop him everytime play a big team, hes one of our reasons weve done well

Personally I would have stuck with him, hes our best player and his height hasnt yet proved a problem for him, hes been quality. i was just pointing out, CP's probable thinking.
  • Somebody (Powell) needs to come up with a good reason why Solly didn't play today.

Our defence has looked solid this year, why he decided to change it I don't know. We've had the ball hoofed up to our defenders in a lot of games this year, and have dealt with it effectively enough. Not only did it mean Solly was out of the side (who is top of the CL ratings), it broke up Morrison and Taylor which has probably been our strongest partnership on the pitch this season.

We, as a result, looked to lack cohesion in the first half all over the pitch. Cort seemed to struggle with their big number 28 and understandably Morrison looked out of place at right back. He might be a decent right back, but he's got into the swing of things (and very well IMO) at centre back.

We, again, got stuck into playing the opposition's type of football. Yes, Stevenage played the ball on the ground sporadically, but as far as I could see they weren't shy of smacking the ball as far and as high as they could. It worked.

We started lumping it up too because Stevenage were quick on closing us down. When we did play it through the midfield we managed to get some joy. But we didn't do it enough. Instead we chose to bypass the midfield too much and looked for Kermorgant's flick ons. Which didn't work.

We need to work out a way of breaking down teams that close us down quickly because at the moment we don't look like we have much of an answer to it.

  • We were shite. End of discussion.

Could have played another 90mins and we wouldnt have scored.

1 goal in 270mins is a real concern.

Too many players didnt turn up.

We are top of the league. Why are we changing our players to cope with Stevenage? Go and impose our gameon them. Dont worry about them.
  • Powell made a massive mistake by dropping solly and should of admitted so at half time by bringing him on and bringing with it some cohesion. We needed to get in behind them today we showed when we did we looked dangerous but every time the final ball ended up with them, we never had enough bodies in the box. Thought cort and wiggins played well. Powell and the team need to learn from this quickly.

Actually whilst I do agree that dropping Solly was a bit of a surprise it wasn't our defence that needed changing  today (during the game that is), because Stevenage were hardly a threat....so, Solly or no Solly the result would have been the same.

The main problem is that we are now humping long balls up to Kermit....I think he's a good player but when he plays we stop playing it on the ground and instead play too much hoof ball.

  • I do feel that there is a tendency on here for huge mood swings - let's all calm down (a bit!).

The worry is that performances seem to have dipped over the last couple of games - we have to hope that the management team have got some ideas as to how to counter that. The coming week is going to be a real test of CP - can he turn it round? Has he got a plan B?
  • It seems Hayes may have been more important to the side's good start than some have been willing to give him credit for.

Wasn't at the game, but from the commentary it did not sound like BWP and Kermorgant were combining at all and goodness knows why Solly was left out. What with Kermorgant and Green being brought into a winning team and now the player of the season so far being left out so we could move a centre back to right back, there has been a fair amount of needless fiddling by powell in the last couple of weeks.

Solly, Waggy and Hayes back in next week please.

  • Any post matchg interview comments from CP

People who diss Stevenage and Tranmere are missing the point. It's us who played badly in both games. What little (very little) football was on display came from them. Of course we are going to lose games and, yes, we are still top, but it is the performances that are the worrying thing.
  • People should just chill a bit!! First defeat this season and suicide looms!! Come on chaps get a grip yeah!!
