Flat as hell first half. Right from the off both crowd and team were just totaly flat.

Amate said after he thought Kermit was great and Showumi total Kak. Strange how people see the same game so differantly.  Yan the man was poor and i thought Showmi was MotM  pace and a pain in the arse for our defence the whole time he was on the pitch.

CP got it wrong today. To give both Green and Kermit their first start was wrong. Green, yes can understand it (and being at home) but it would have been better for Green to have Hayes and BWP  to aim at .At least they would have known where their runs were going. Yan and BWP didnt gel (why would they straight away?).

Cant help feeling our midfield lacks a ball winner, but who would you drop  if we could get one ?

oh their goal took a big deflection off Sollys shin. Looks good on TV but the guy was just trying to belt a cross over.

Not sure if it was a pen was watching the ball and the TV i have seen dosnt show it, but we defo had a pen which was given as outside the box by the ref. The free kick goes down as one of the worst of the season !!

3 points clear at top of the league ----------------------------still shouldnt moan at that.
  • Flat game, Tranmere were the better team in the first half and we were in the second. They were lucky with their goal (although they deserved it) while we were someone fortunate to get that penalty.

The stand out thing for me was that Kermogant and BWP didn't seem to link that well. Ok, this is their first start together and it didn't help that BWP had a poor game but a point gained and that's one less to get.

  • I should of guessed that result of course when my mate suggested that we go and get our annual innoculations against division three football.  What struck me and I hadn't visited since Oldham LAST season was that nothing changes in this dire dire division. Still I shall be back next year and hopefully for a Championship game. As I remarked on the way out, after a performance like that, getting that point makes me strangely even more certain that we are going up.  Thanks to everyone on here for raising my expectations though this season with your comment and analysis, got me off of my arse and out for the day .
  • Kermi - I dont think it was so much playing him that was the big mistake as our chnge of tactics. When we had to kick long (and this has to haapen sometimes when sides presuure us) we went stright down the middle. Even though Kermi won a lot they had 2 players sweeping up and along with the keeper BWP was never going to get a sniff unless they made a mistake.

When Hayes played he often moves out to the left and our longer balls are much more likely to be won by him or Jackson and knocked into a dangerous area.

This didnt happen until late in the second half when Kermi did come wider and headedit diagonally and waggy got on it and we almost created something.

THe angles were all wrong for the long balls.

  • Massive managerial mistake by Powell, never change a winning team. He did and look what happened, I also think he didn't get the boys up for it before the kick off. That said I think he will change the team back to the same as Sheff Utd away, He will have learnt from his error. On balance a draw was fair.
Feel sorry for Green he was not at the races today, I feel he has messed his chance up.
    Morrison clear MOTM for me.
The crowd - Where was the 'covered end choir', cos it was like the old Highbury Library at times, especially first half. Sort it out boys n girls, very lame.
It was a really strange atmosphere from the start. I was in the Upper North and sensed a lethargy around the place well before kick off. It was a very strange atmosphere. Although when you look at the West and East stands during the game they don't even seem to be clapping along with any songs let alone sing, it would help if we had support from all sides, but this is a topic that i've seen on Charlton sites for years so the less said the better I suppose.
  • Tranmere came with a plan, which they executed well. It was frustrating for everyone Charlton-affiliated but they didn't come here to watch us slice them to pieces, they came to win, albeit by means charitably describable as underhanded. The long ball didn't help us at all, and it's worrying that Powell had to use yet another half time team talk to get things rolling. Better to come from us though.
  • A number of comments are suggesting we changed tactics going for a long ball game but i don't think it was by choice, tranmere did the same as brentford, closed us down in midfield very quickly, and with no time on the ball we were forced into some aimless punts downfield in preference to losing the ball in dangerous positions. Playing a more passing game thru midfield requires players playing with confidence, not afraid to make mistakes. Our midfielders in particular are young and our crowd need to understand that if we want them to play on the deck they are going to make a few mistakes but that is better in the long run than punting.
As for Stephens free kick that went wrong, the last time he tried something similar from a corner jackson scored. I'd be happy with 50% success rate from there.
  • I tell you what was a positive about yesterday was infact the music that they where playing before leon corts five cack songs ! . It was awesome

  • Who won the pen? Both Kermogant and hollands seem to go down, fl show said it was Kermogant but also seen hollands quoted

I predicted before the game it would end up 1-1 (not on here as I don't).

After drawing at MKD and winning at Sheff U, this game was always set up to be the classic banana skin. The players were likely to be complacent and so were the fans , it's human nature. You can't avoid it, just try to overcome it. We didn't.

We were flat from the off & it didn't help with 2 changes & shouldn't have changed the successful formula.

Having said that Hayes & Waggy have been clinging to their spots for a few weeks & I can't in all honesty blame Powell for making the changes.

However, it was clear from early on that we were missing the ball retention that Hayes & Waggy provide, in particular Hayes' link up play.

I think Powell should have brought those 2 on at HT for Kermit & Green, although I never expected him to, as like Curbs he rarely makes early changes.

A point won under the circumstances.

Their goal was a complete fluke, as it deflected past Hamer's right, when it was a cross or possibly shot to his left. Although they deserved their lead.

We lost our passing game & I'd have Hayes & Waggy back in next week.

  • well i'll be the first to say it.Chris Powell you ballsed up. After 11 games unbeaten you changed the team why ? If I was waggy or hayes I would well and truely pissed off. Danny Green doesn't work hard enough and kermo just wanted to flick it on, which meant as we played the Hopeful long ball we bypassed midfield all day. He needed to control it and lay it off to the midfield men bringing them into play. Not the end of the world and maybe powelly will learn today if it aint broken dont mess with it.
    Agree with this.

We've used a style of play based on getting it into the front players to feet all season. The F2 didn't fit together, there was no pace or penetration on the flanks and there were too many long balls. BWP had no chance getting onto Kermit's flick-ons. We are wasting his ability if we are asking him to chase flick-ons. Missed Hayes operating between the lines and Wagstaff's pace.

On the positive side, we drew a game we would have lost last season.
  • Who won the pen? Both Kermogant and hollands seem to go down, fl show said it was Kermogant but also seen hollands quoted

    Looked like Kermorgant to me.
  • Minor setback I think. Their goal was a tad lucky and I think our defense is capable of dealing with any team in this league comfortably. Take away that deflection and it's a win whilst playing badly, as it was we still didn't lose, we are a strong team now.

As people have mentioned, the rotation of the squad made it hard for us to play, Waggy and Solly on the right compliment each other and the team too well for Green to come in as it stands. He has however made positive impacts at points from the bench, when we need a bit of acceleration, a good cross, and the new threat of Kermit also coming on in the later stages.

Back to the starting 11 with Wagstaff and Hayes for me, much more suited to the passing style of play that has been winning us games and will continue to win us games and to improve the longer we go on.

Green has a lot to offer but given the lack of creativity shown yesterday, he didn't really get a chance to do much anyway, singling him out won't help anything. The fact that we have him and Wagstaff competing for that position is great for them both in terms of having to prove themselves and in terms of giving the team completely different options and shape.

Found some comments interesting regarding the center of midfield. The first one being something along the lines of needing a ball winner. Correct me if I'm wrong but Hollands seems to do a good job at that/the general tactical awareness needed there. No problem for me there, especially considering how strong our defense looks most of the time.

Also regarding Stephens needing to do a bit more. I agree with this and I think as the season progresses he will start to contribute more and more. The better we play in terms of our passing and creativity, creating space etc, the more chances he will have to split the oppositions defense and to get more shots in.

Re. BWP being left out, I definitely don't think that is the way to go, although I admit, when the circumstances are right, I would be interested in seeing how Hayes And YK perform together.

Finally, the support was dire at times. It's been a lot better in other games and that level should be maintained regardless of who we're playing (in the league at least). People seem to think that the players need to earn the right to have our support. In my opinion it is the other way round, or at least they seem to definitely step it up when we get behind them. Besides that, I can't understand why anyone would want the support to be bad, surely it's more enjoyable to get behind your team collectively, add to the crowd & team spirit etc. On the plus side, I was impressed with the understanding and applause for the team at the end despite a frustrating day out and the individuals walking off the pitch to the sound of their names being sung says a lot about the strengths of this team.

  • Hollands had a black guy all over him (sorry don't know his name & it wasn't Goodison) and Hollands ended up on the deck.

Kermit later went to ground after he jumped with a white guy.

I think the pen was given for a foul on Hollands, although I didn't actually see a foul.

I disagree, Waggy has limitations as a winger as we've highlighted and hasn't looked quite as sharp in the last couple of matches, while Kermogant's introduction last week changed the game. With two goals and a couple of assists perhaps he deserved a start? We have a big squad and players need to be rotated in and out and rested occasionally. Having a match fit Green could come in handy, same with Kermogant. Unfortunately neither shone in a lethargic team performance, but both are going to have a lot of football to play this season.

  • They came to do a job on us, closed us down and didn't let's us pass it around at the back. Don't think him meant thier goal, ref should have booked thier keeper for time wasting. Danny Green: Green cross code: learn to cross the ball young man. We have taken four points from the last two games, I think everyone would have been happy with that last Saturday morning. Not sure about singing that the ref is a see you next Tuesday.

Green...... "learn to cross the ball young man"...you're having a laugh of course. He's created three goals thus far this season from perfect pin point crosses. Were you not at Milton Keynes or have you not seen the highlights, obviously not?
I honestly cannot believe you just said that............an incredible comment.

He is reputed to be the best crosser of a ball in the whole Division, let alone our team. Whether or not that makes him a better option than Waggy or that it means he should simply walk into the side is of course another matter and open to debate but his ability to cross a ball is certainly not in doubt.

Having said that he had a poor game yesterday and did himself no favours in the 'Green or Waggy' debate..

  • Tranmere did the sam job on us as they did last season when we played them at home. Went 1 up and then used every trick in the book to slow the game down. We weren't at the races in the first half. We were much better in the second half and perhaps adding another midfielder for a striker would have been better as we struggled to get the ball out to the wingers or through the middle. Being unbeaten in 12 games is superb though and have yet to see these players give up when going a goal down. Who knows, we might just do an Arsenal and go unbeaten all season.

It wasn't black and white then?  ;-)

  • In view of the performance, I was pleased with a point. Tranmere are an irritating bunch but they had a clear gameplan, worked tremendously hard and played some good stuff as well. Although we were better in the second half, they still looked dangerous and I couldn't see where a Charlton goal was coming from.

Although it's always easy looking through the clear rear window of hindsight ( and I was certainly happy with the team selection ), the changes didn't work. Green had a poor game ( as he did on Wednesday ) and Kermagant's presence encouraged us to go long - recognising that we were outnumbered and outmuscled in midfield. Even the back 4 had that monster Enoch bearing down on them if they dallied on the ball for more than a moment. Talk about defending from the front.

Green and Kermogant look decent players and I expect them both to play an important role in our season. However, I expect Waggy to be back on Saturday. Whilst he has his limitations, he does give us more solidity down the right side and it will be a tough old game over at Stevenage. We do sometimes struggle against the physically powerful sides and I expect a bit of a scrap over there next week.

I thought that Wiggins was man of the match for us. He really is a tidy full back and he got forward throughout with real purpose, including in the first half when we were dire.

Overall, I don't think there is much between many of the teams in this division and the vast majority of the players fall within a relatively narrow band of quality. It is, after all, the 3rd division. For our part, we have a good defence, some good passers of the ball and a natural goalscorer up front. Although we need to sort out a partner ( or the best partner ) for BWP, provided that we can impose our tempo on most games and "dig in " where we can't, we'll be in the mix at the end of the season.
  • Our best two players had unusual off days (Hollands and BWP).  Replacements for maligned Charlton products proved not to be the univeral answer that some imagined (Hamer and Green).  Weak ref didn't manage to get hold of constant second half time wasting, but gave us a pen for a standard in-box contest.

Yes the shot was deflected (slightly) but it was a long time in the air before the keeper moved.  100% at fault.

  • Yes the shot was deflected (slightly) but it was a long time in the air before the keeper moved.  100% at fault.

100% disagree. I was in line with that deflected shot/cross & Hamer had no chance. He was quite rightly already going to his left, when it went the other way. I was "wrong footed" & I was sat in The Upper North.
  • Here is the Penalty

Like the way our players runs cross pitch behind JJ - gives the keeper something to look at.
  • The ball shifted about 90 degrees off Solly, Hamer had no hope with it
  • The ball shifted about 90 degrees off Solly, Hamer had no hope with it
Exactly....I was in The West Upper and more or less directly behind the shot...Hammer had no chance it would have beaten any keeper at any level...........unless of course they took a complete gamble and dived the wrong way in the first place 'before' the deflection.
  • I liked when  the ref gave the penalty as a free kick, whoever was taking it placed the ball in the penalty area to take it.

Wish we could learn to defend as resolutely as they did when we are one nil up with minutes to go

We thought that their player had shoved the ref when the pen was awarded but it was only when I saw the highlights that the truth emerged and it was actually the ref who shoved the player

Ref was a joke - should have taken control early on but never did, was far too busy trotting around like a mini-me version of Howard Webb

Thought we looked disjointed at times.
Stephens seems to have one good game then 2 shockers
Wiggins is improving all the time so glad we kept faith (well at least some of us did)
Kermorgant looked ok but maybe needs another game under his belt
BWP looked lost but he does most games from what I've seen (though he still manages to score out of nothing sometimes)
    - think he'd rather play up front with Hayes rather than Kermorgant
Green looked like someone has hasn't played much in months but we need to give him another game or 2 before writing him off - think he has the quality but we just haven't seen it yet
  • A few people have said, "We'd have lost that game last season".  Truth is, it was almost a carbon copy of last season's game, and exactly the same result.  I got a strange feeling of deja vu from very early on.  Please all remind me never to bother travelling down from Scotland again to see us play Tranmere!!  With any luck, it might not be on our fixture list next season...

I said to some mates that we have got to get out of this poxy division as I don't think I can face seeing Tranmere play again.
