Losing 2-0 so far but have been the better team and leading in shots 18 to 9 so there's a way back into this game for them yet. We were told Dallas' depth would be too much, but turned out the Oilers' depth players performed better than Dallas'. The Oilers go much deeper than they are given credit for, it's not all about McDavid and Draisaitl, but what a pair of weapons to have. Florida slight favourites, but the two teams have almost identical records this season, if you take oit the anomaly of that losing run the Oilers had at the start of the season. It'll be a close fought 6 or 7 game series, imo. Not sure I can call which way it'll go.
I know interest in the NHL is limited on here, but if you have a passing interest - it's game 7 of the Stanley Cup final tonight (1:20 am UK time for any night owls).
The series is finely poised at 3-3 as the Oilers aim to be only the second team ever, and the first since 1942, to come back from 3-0 to win a final 4-3 and seal a 6th cup and first for over 30 years, while the Panthers try to avoid the ignominy of a reverse sweep and win their first ever cup. It should be a belter.
Ovechkin has just broken Gretzky's all time goalscoring record. Fitting that the goal which broke the record was from his office at the top of the face off circle.
Incredible to think he's done this largely in an era when goalscoring was much lower than the cricket scores of the 80s when Gretzky was in his prime.

Agree, and how about what Caps are doing in the standings at the same time? Really surprised they made the playoffs last season. This time winning Division, Conference an still in for the Presidents Trophy.

Yeah, Carbery is a great coach - I thought what he did last year set the tone for this season. All that with Ovechkin out for best part of five weeks before christmas too.

In Gretzky's day the goalies were about 6 inches shorter, and the pads were smaller - much more open net to be shot at. 1 more goal in exactly the same number of games. Shame about his politics, but the same goes for Greztky these days too.

Choke doesn’t do that justice - I always expect them to fold, but those last two games in Toronto were beyond awful. Back to back 6-1 home defeats is quite something.
After the miserable season the Bruins had, I can always rely on the Leafs to cheer me up..
Oilers - I’d like to see them win, but they’re another flawed team. I just don’t think they’ve got the depth to win a 7 game series against either the Hurricanes or the Panthers.
We got told the Oilers didn’t have the depth last year but they went as close as you can without winning. If anything, they’re deeper this year and their 3rd and 4th lines have been contributing almost as much as the top lines so far in this year’s playoffs. This run has not been built on McDavid and Draisaitl, so far.
They’re playoff veterans now and they seem to be playing into form as the playoffs progress. Their ability to turnaround games from losing positions is pretty formidable. The big question mark for them is can they can get consistent decent goal tending out of Skinner or Pickard often enough. Encouragingly, Skinner showed signs of his form from the 2024 playoffs in the last two games vs. Vegas.
If Stu is getting his mojo back and/or they can continue to protect whoever is in goal and keep the opponents shot count low then they’re up there with the rest of the top teams and have a great chance.
I kind of have this feeling that it’s finally Canada’s time with all the shit going on with tariffs etc. The Oilers are the last remaining hope for that. This City has one thing that binds it together, the Oilers. This playoff run is already all anyone is really talking about. The place will come of its hinges if they win it.

Infuriating hockey team.
C’mon you Oil!

Outside bet for the cup for me.
Life, death and fuck the Flyers
Think the finals will be a rematch - and have a feeling the Oilers edge it this year.
