The JPT - How should we approach it ?

  • I don't for one minute think the Powell will want anything less than a victory.
  • Play to win without doubt, i hope we put a strong squad out.
Out of the seven other teams in the southern section, six are from league two, the other team being Bournemouth. Let's not be over confident, but we have a very good chance of reaching the final.
  • I suspect we will miss out on a play off final this season by getting automatic promotion (won't be at Wembley anyway) - so this is an opportunity for a big day out which we will enjoy all the more if things continue as they are. Having said that, there is no way Chrissy can put great importance on these games and would gladly swap a defeat for say a potential injury. Try to win, yes but know that Tranmere is the big game coming up. If we lose, nobody will be devasted and there  will be a little relief that a potential distraction has gone.
  • Bit disappointed with the snobbery attached to the competition. Yes it is one we could do without, and yes it is one to give other squad players match exposure.

But to say you would be embarrassed if we won it is a ridiculous statement. It's effectively a cup for our league, and if you play any game in football then once that whistle goes youbwant to win.

Do you think Man U fans are embarrassed when winning the Coca Cola cup ? For them, a minor competition they could do without ? Of course not, and I could imagine the comments on here if Man U tried to withdraw from the competition.

    .
  • The snobbery isn't helped by the likes of Sheff Wednesday subbing their 'keeper after 2 minutes and used the rest of their substitutions by 17 minutes.

It's a stupid dated competition which either needs to be revamped or scrapped. Won't be embarrassed to win it, but I'm embarrassed to be in it.

    what he said. This. +1

I would rather the rules said you have to play 5 home grown under 21 players.   Wouldn't be far off for most teams anyway but would mean the kids got a run out, fans know they are going to see the youngsters and the two teams would be better matched.

Make a virtue of a necessity and call it the Johnstones Youth Talent Cup.
  • Id personally approach it by joining the south circular at catford, then A2 getting off before the tunnel, park up near Busbys way and then walk.

Surely the embarrassment is being in the third division in the first place? If we are here we shouldn't (in my opinion) behave like snobs. It's like a rich family that lose all their money then move into a poor neighbourhood and behave like their new neighbours are beneath them. We are in this division because we weren't good enough for the one above, and haven't been able to demonstrate we are too good for this one - yet.

I didn't realise we had so many elitist fans. It should come as no surprise that we are not very popular in this division.

Either the Football League is a meritocratic, or it's a boys club where you can only be in a specific division because you are mates with the 'big boys'. I know which I'd rather have.
  • So Huddersfield, one of our main rivals, will be resting up in November before coming to us,  while we travel up to somewhere like Morecombe to have the **** kicked out of us, and for what?

Still, there should be a crowd tonight because all of you who are so enthusiastic about this, will be there, won't you?

Huddersfield got knocked out last night, so that's one less big team in it.

It's there to win, we should try to win the JPT.

Well I'll be there anyway.  Wouldn't say I was exactly "enthusiastic" but Huddersfield had over 10k last night.

And we can't go to Morecambe as it's regionalised.   Southend more likely and that's if we even go through.
  • I would go all out for it.  Maintain a winning mentality that should boost confidence even further. Going out in the cups early hasnt really done us much favours historically and i think we have a big enough squad at this level to be leading this league and compete in the SJPT
  • Addicks boss frustrated at trophy rules

    Wednesday, 05 October 2011

    By Richard Cawley

CHARLTON boss Chris Powell has voiced his frustration at the
rule preventing him from resting key players in tonight’s Johnstone’s
    Paint Trophy tie with Brentford.

The Addicks must start the Bees game with a minimum of six players who have made the most appearances so far this season.

Powell made 11 changes for their two Carling Cup ties - and looked set
to do the same again if he had been able to freely select his starting
    line-up.

“It’s a shame because as a football manager you want to choose the team
you feel is right for a particular game,” said the Charlton boss.

“They want people to take the competition seriously, which I understand, but that might mean using players who have knocks.

“We’ve got a few aches and niggles, which you’ll always get after three
games in a week. I’ve got to balance which ones are okay to play another
match and which desperately need an extra day or two of rest.

“I could’ve done with the Brentford match being another time but it’s
live on Sky and fans pay money to watch us - we have a duty to do our
    best.

“Look what the competition did for Brentford and Carlisle - they got to
Wembley. The cups have never been one of our strong points so the chance
to possibly have 30,000 Charlton fans at Wembley is not to be sniffed
    at.”

On-loan defender Leon Cort definitely misses the Brentford game. The
Burnley defender, on a season-long stay with the Addicks, is due to play
for Guyana against Barbados on Friday and then Bermuda next Tuesday.

If thats what CP thinks, then thats what I think.
    He's the man!

And presumably if you disagree with him then you cant be a true Charlton fan. ;-)

We should be aiming to win every game at this level. It's what the big teams do. And we're a big team at this level. A winning mentality is so vital. Accepting defeat, even if it is only in the JPT, is unacceptable.

We could make the final of the JPT which means a big payday, a dayout to Wembley, which is rare for Charlton, and a trophy.

I'm sure Powell will be desperate to win this tonight and our big players (the more irreplacable ones) e.g BWP won't be risked.

Not me. I'm not going unless we get to the Final!
  • 6/1 with Corals to win the comp. 3/1 to reach the final.
  • There's your answer. Turn up, play a disjointed game without much enthusiasm, give Alonso a debut when he ain't ready and move on after being well beaten by a team that wanted it a LOT more. Distraction over. Wembley? Been there twice already!

  • I guess the Jpt wasn't our 'one aim' CP has been going on about then?
  • In answer to my opening question.

    Badly. Very Badly.
