The JPT - How should we approach it ?

  • We would all go to Wembley and enjoy it if it happened. If we played a second string side I'd probably go- I really enjoyed the Reading match and it's a chance to look at players that we might need to call on at some stage. But I think putting a six player rule actually degrades the competition- let the size of the games dictate its importance. By semi finals- teams usually put out their best teams and they don't do it because they are told they have to.
  • The objectives on Wednesday are as follows:

    1. No injuries
    2. No cards
    3. No exposure of players with injury issues (such as BWP) or people who need a kip (such as Danny Hollands)
    4. Use subs as Megson did so that as many fringe players as poss get some match time
    5. At least try to play some nice stuff for the benefit of the loyal supporters who turn up for this total utter nonsense of a competition

Apart from 5 disagree to the extent we should go out to win.  We should maintain the momentum and for some players this is the only chance they will have of getting to wembley in their careers. plus it gives a run out for players.  i would hate for us to do a megson or a  man u
  • I saw a Johnstones Paint lorry yesterday, could that of been a good omen?
  • In principle, what Smegson done regarding subs may be looked at as a shrewd move but the problem I would have is if we were to make 3 early subs, what if one of the remaining first teamers were to pick up a knock? Having to keep them out on the pitch could turn a niggle into something more serious.

I'm sure the gaffer knows what's best for the team so we'll have to just wait and see.
  • We've got the peoples cup already , not sure we need Jpt now, is the trophy cabinet/ sideboard big enough for all this silverware?
  • I would like us to win this tournament, in any way that CP wants to try and win it, as for the argument of picking up injuries and suspensions, this also applies to other teams which may result in us having an advantage in later league games
I was at the Full members cup final and was very proud to see MY team playing at Wembley, even though the result didn't go our way!
I do agree though, that the rules need revising, and you should be able to play whatever team you wish and surely by getting to Wembley or maybe even winning this tournament in March can only be a morale boost for the players to finish the season in style

Before the takeover it would have been a problem but now I expect we could afford a mahogany trophy cabinet with room for at least three trophies

While this is going off topic, I was there and didn't enjoy it much at all. I had the feeling that it wasnt really my team at all, and of course were outnumbered by a team whose fans had come all the way from the North West (because at the time we were at Selhurst, and the fight to get home to the Valley had not started).

Different case, but I am one of those who finds the idea of winning this thing quite dispiriting too because it shows how far we have fallen. I'm not sure I'd come over from Prague for it, whereas for the other two cup finals or the play-off final, I would hitch-hike if necessary

We will, probably around 30k if the prices are reasonable and it will be a good day out. Probably take around 4k tonight including away fans!

Wouldnt turn up tonight mate if I was you
  • Winning is a mentality.

We should go with the mentality to win this competition.

We'll get a lot of money from it, if we do, and a day out to Wembley.
  • What is Monkey Rush?

I was thinking the oteher day when the Arsenal keeper went up for a corner that the game would be better if keepers had to go up for corners.  Maybe they could try that in the JPT.

No the JPT is a sign of how far we have fallen. The thought of our first (NEW)Wembley visit being merely for the JPT is quite sad. We are better than that.
  • Not at the moment we're not!
  • I diagree with this idea that winning the JPT would be embarrassing to have on our honour roll

I would be proud that having dipped into the third division (hopefully briefly) we grouped together sufficiently to win a trophy that is only open to teams in the bottom 2 divisions... if we are gonna be down here, we might as well show that we are the best down here

it would also (hopefully) mark the end of a period of decline and symbolise our re-emergence as a club that has its s*** together

once again - we could really use a nice day out at wembley after all the pain of the last few seasons

cannot understand the mentality of people saying that they wouldn't even go!
    It's Charlton at Wembley, FFS!

Exactly. Since winning the FA Cup in 1947, we've been there twice, Full Members' Cup and the Play-Off Final. I could wait for a more momentous occasion, like the FA Cup Final or League Cup Final, but as there's a reasonable chance that I'll be dead by the time that comes round (I'm 31), I'll think I'll grab the chance when I can.

  • A league and JPT double would suit me fine, some people need to get over the fact we are were we are.

If the JPT is the only chance of silverware we have playing in league one then I say we should take it.

You get silverware for winning League One. That'll suit me just fine.

Some people need to understand that being in League One is not just demeaning. It is financially dangerous. We need to get out of here, fast.

  • five current premier league clubs have won this trophy plus Brum and Birmingham who came down last year. Two years ago Soton won it.
  • Brum and Birmingham was the same year that Tottenham beat Spurs in the Fa cup final :)

    Monkey rush - explain please?

Rush goalie (also known as drop back goalie, fly goalie, fly keepers, monkey rush, goalie-and, sweeper-keeper, goalie-rush, Russian mo, Russian keeper, glass-hands, goalie-wag, spot-goalie, last man back, any man save, spider goalie, Goalie-backie, Goalie-when and Goalie-when-Ned) is a variation of football in which the role of the goalkeeper is more flexible than normal. The goalkeeper position is left unfilled until the ball comes near the goal. At this point the nearest player to the ball will take on the role of goalkeeper. Once the danger has passed the player in goal (the "rush goalie") may then return being a normal outfield player again. Rush goalie is only played in informal football matches, usually by children, and often when all of the players wish to play a more active role in the game than the position of goalkeeper would normally allow; or when the number of players per side is particularly low.
A rush goalie system can also be used as a way of "levelling out" teams when playing with an uneven number of players - usually, the team with an extra man will be forced to nominate one player to stay in goal permanently (also known as stick keeper or simply sticks) while the other team is allowed to play rush.
Sometimes (in particular when the variant is known as goalie-when) players are only allowed to handle the ball in the area provided they have shouted "when" before touching the ball
  • Frankly I want us to have as much silverware as possible, including this trophy. It'd be good press/exposure, good money and a great day out. I think we have a squad fit for the challenge of competing in a cup run as well as being more than able to gain promotion at the same time.
I don't really see a downside. Yeah its a silly trophy meant for lower league teams, but if you hadn't noticed we are a lower league team right now. The only way up is to win, and win as much as possible.

Plaayer's done it - on Blackheath it ended up with mobs of us running away from the goal so none of us had to be the goalie.
Fine, unless the other team had someone who was happy to hang around his own third and save as required!

We should try and win JPT - good for morale, shows we can win what is put in front of us.
To say it is demeaning is nonsense - its where we are.
Win it, move onwards and upwards and remember a Wembley day fondly, but from the safety of upper championship residency
  • Frankly, I can't get enough Charlton this season.  Six rounds is it?  Bring it on.

Our priorities should be the same as every other match:
    1. To win it.
    2. To play nice football that wows the fans.
    3. No injuries.
    4, No cards.

    Sh~t yeah!
  • That's an interesting post, Dave. You are saying, for example, that every winner of a second round game gets £7,000? That seems like a lot of money to pay out over the whole tournament. Presumably the sponsor has to stump up that money.

Do you know if similar payouts are made on a round basis for the Carling Cup and FA Cup?

If correct that slightly offsets my other gripe, that each of these games must lose money for the club unless and until it gets to the final.

Mind you I'm not sure how you calculate the cost of losing, say Johnnie Jackson, to injury on Wednesday, which a lot of the gung ho people on here dont seem to want to consider

Prague ... the finances in the Carling Cup are structured differently:

Unlike Football Association competitions like the FA Cup there is no prize money until the semi-finals for the Carling Cup, which is run by the football League.

Losing semi-finalists do receive £25,000 and the losing finalist £50,000. The winners take home £100,000.

Facility fees for TV games from round three to the quarter-finals is £175,000, for the semi-finals £200,000 and £250,000 for the final.

And in the FA Cup ....

Winner of Extra preliminary Round Tie £500
Winner of Preliminary round tie £1,000
Winner of 1st Qualifying round tie £7,000
Winner of 2nd Qualifying round tie £7,000
Winner of 3rd Qualifying round £10,000
Winner of 4th Qualifying round £20,000
Winner of 1st Round tie £20,000
Winner of 2nd Round tie £30,000
Winner of 3rd Round tie £50,000
Winner of 4th round tie £75,000
Winner of 5th Round tie £150,000
Winner of 6th roiund tie £400,000
    Runner up £1,000,000
    Winner £2,000,000
