Don't think I'll be going, how long have they been charging these prices in the east stand?!

  • Try and win it: Good for morale and good for the bank balance

    Sullivan, Solly, Taylor, Morrison, Wiggins

    Green, Hughes, Stephens, Wagstaff

    Kermogant, Smith

This season there is "One Aim" and the JPT is not it. Couldn't give a toss about it, but I'll still go down on Wednesday. Hoping to get a view of Alonso!
    Here you go!

  • The league is undoubtedly the priority but a day out at Wembley, yes please.

Those down playing a cup and trip to Wembley, i take it you wouldn't go then? If we get knocked out i'm not bothered at all but nothing wrong with a bit of silverware.

    GK Hamer
    RB Solly
    CB Doc
    CB Taylor
    LB Evina
    MR Waggy
    MC Hughes
    MC Alonson
    ML Jackson
    STR Hayes
    STR Kermogant

  • I think, if Chris Powell is in two minds re: waggy & hayes, he has the opportunity to play them both as 2 of the 6 then not play them on Sat.

Hamer to start as has been said above plus the 3 fittest of the rest - those 3 to be replaced at half time however the game is going

The only problem with this - and I suggested the same earlier as it the logical way to approach - is that it could damage morale if Waggy and Hayes feel hard done by. If you are going to be dropped, you don't want to be dropped by being picked and neither really deserve to be dropped to be honest. Maybe it should just be a case of Hamer - then doing the fitness tests and asking players who feel up to it and believe it won't affect them - definitely BWP has to be rested. I do think all of this nonsense is ridiculous and we could field a team capable of winning it without the need for all this rubbish.
  • The most important aspect of this match is that it is live on Sky. A good performance might persuade some of our stay-away supporters to return and so make the Valley a louder and more packed fortress for home League games.

Good performance and Sky do not generally mix for us.
  • do not care in the slightest do a megson i dislike him but it was a shrewd move. saves some people too.

To get to Wembley in this farce of a competition we will have to play six games. Do you really think we will get through all of them without an injury or a card which results in a suspension?

I could almost live with it if they made a rule that any suspensions were limited to that competition only, but oh no. They can dictate to managers whom they play and then make them suffer the consequences in the league.

I want out of this division, this season,  and Wembley can wait.

  • Can't wait for Wednesday!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

So we need 6 from Saturdays team . How about complete rest for BWP, Hollands, Stephens, Morrison, Solly.

Hamer (not too much danger in risking the keeper) Francis, Cort, Taylor, Wiggins, Wagstaff, Jackson, Alonso, Evina, Hayes and Kermit  subs Sullivan, Green, Euell, Hughes, Doherty

  • I think I must be in a minority, I think this competition is a good idea.

Maybe we have got above ourselves, but for many of the teams below the top two divisions this is a chance at the kind of day out that the top sides get. Sure I'd rather be in the FA Cup Final, but I think that very unlikely. Frankly I'd rather be in the Champions League Final, but that is even less likely to happen. Why do we have to rubbish the competitions that smaller clubs than us aspire to. If we are too good to enter their competition then what are we doing in the third division. Let's also remember that there were 12 teams in the third division that finished above us last season.

As for not entering. Man Utd were allowed to drop out of the FA Cup because they were in the World Club competition (what ever they called it). If the FA allowed teams to not enter what would happen to the competition then. Would we enter? I mean we can't win it so maybe we shouldn't bother? Same would apply for all the third and forth division teams and most of the championship teams. Then two thirds of the Premier League teams would not bother as they are desperate to stay up and the FA Cup can cost them valuable Premier League points.

Maybe we don't like it, but we add that little bit of credibility to a competition that some clubs really, really want to win. Would we want to win the FA Cup if all the Premier League teams and half the Championship teams abstained one season?

If there were no rule about having to play some first team players then it would demean the competition even more.

Would I like a day out at Wembley? Of course I would. I suspect that if we made it we'd take thousands. there;'d be none of the suggestions that you can see monster trucks there so I'll not bother going to the JPT Final.

  • Never want us to lose anything but this pointless competition is one I want us to play our second eleven as far as possible. Injuries to key player is just not an option.
  • we are (one of) the best team(s) in the competition..... and I would love us to get to Wembley and get some silverware

as an ex-pat addick, I would fly back to the UK for the final (and have checked which weekends I would need for the last two seasons - right before the matches that put us out)

would still play only the min. 6 regulars in this game (and include waggy, hayes and hamer for the reasons stated above)....would also be ok with a couple of first half substitutes... I also like the idea of testing Taylor out in goal for a bit if possible....

but.... no way I want us to 'chuck' this game...wanna see us go all the way to the final

a day out at Wembley would do us all good after the torrid few years we have had

and I would spend a fair penny to fly back for >24 hours to be part of it too

The whole arguement about not being able to win the FA Cup is off set by the potential to make alot of money (drawing Spurs away for example) that you wouldn't get drawing D&R at home in the JPT, so I'm pretty sure that all 3rd and fourth teir teams would want to win 2 games to get that opportunity! Plus, YOU GET TO PICK WHO YOU WANT! If we draw say Preston away in the First round, Powell has the option of saying "I can rest my players, a la the league cup" if he feels "We aren't going to win the whole thing". He can't do that in the JPT. I agree with those that a winning mentality spreads through out the team, but we showed both sides in the League cup, a second string won and lost, and it hasn't done all that much to derail the 1st team has it? This match could, seeing as potentially 6 key players could get injured or pick up cards which will have an impact on our season far greater than potentially winning this cup. I would also say we are only favourites to win it because of how good our 1st eleven are, no doubt Huddersfield,Sheffield Utd and Preston are up there too, so are we really that clear a favourite to win it?

Thought it might be useful to get some idea of the financial benefits of making progress in the JPT:

73,476 fans saw Southampton beat Carlisle 4-1 at Wembley with both clubs receiving £350,000 each in gate receipts.

The prize money is £5,000 (first round), £7,000 (second round), £10,000 (area quarter-final), £17,000 (area semi-final), £25,500 (area final), £40,000 (winners).

So, it feels a bit like a poker game to me. A bit of cash as you progress through the rounds, but it's really about setting up the opportunity to win big bucks later on.

Any TV money must also be welcome.
  • That's an interesting post, Dave. You are saying, for example, that every winner of a second round game gets £7,000? That seems like a lot of money to pay out over the whole tournament. Presumably the sponsor has to stump up that money.

Do you know if similar payouts are made on a round basis for the Carling Cup and FA Cup?

If correct that slightly offsets my other gripe, that each of these games must lose money for the club unless and until it gets to the final.

Mind you I'm not sure how you calculate the cost of losing, say Johnnie Jackson, to injury on Wednesday, which a lot of the gung ho people on here dont seem to want to consider
  • On Football Manager you get paid Round by Round in pretty much all cups so that must obviously mean thats how it works

  • Don't think I'll be going, how long have they been charging these prices in the east stand?!

It's £5 everywhere in the ground
  • The only aim we should have is to get out of this division this season. Nothing else matters. I don't care if we get stuffed on Wednesday and I wouldn't waste my time going to Wembley if we did reach the final. I applaud Megson for subbing as many of his first teamers as soon as he could. I hope Powell does the same. Winning the bloody thing would not be compensation for losing one of our regular first teamers to long term injury.

    Really?  Very strange
  • Why so?

Going to watch one's team play at Wembley is tied up with the chance of winning something worthwhile and feeling proud to be part of it. I would feel faintly embarrassed at watching Charlton play in the final of a competition where the rules state how many regular first teamers you have to play because the organisers know that given the choice no team bigger than Barnet would play regular first teamers.

  • If we win this piss pot trophy. VERY SORRY typographical error. I meant Paint Pot trophy i think we ought to celebrate by painting the town........

Red and white is the "in" colour of the moment It has lots of shine and a very deep gloss. The finish is smooth and perfect. Its looks very good and can be applied anywhere in the country.Hopefully it will last through the winter till May when it will take on it's own very special glow.  COYR

  • simple approach it to win it

go all out and win every game we play, play to win, winning is a habit, we need to keep doing it

Obviously we don't want him injured, and I suspect that the pivotal players, like him, will be rested, but there is no reason to assume that the probability of sustaining an injury is inversely proportional to the significance of the game. He could be injured on Saturday against Tranmere. It is even possible that he (or an other) will pick up a small knock, miss out on Saturday and as a consequence another player could suffer a suspension or a long term injury playing in his place against Tranmere.

I do get your point, and I would rather not play the game than lose a match winner for a long period but they are not the only two outcomes.
  • It gives SCP a chance to trial something different to 4 2 4. I'd try  4 3 3. Maybe give the kid Michael Smith a  run out in the second half. Also gives Alonso some game time and get Greenie up to speed.
  • I actually think other fans would give us more stick if we won it than if we actually went out tomorrow.

Still wouldn't complain if we get to the final. I'd be there to watch it
  • we would bring massive support if we reach the final
  • Put Mambo on and tell him to handball it and then later kick the ball away after giving away a foul... He is then sent off and then hopefully lose the game...

The problem is, what if we don't lose the match? We've got another stupid fixture with 1 player suspended...

    Oh i dunno

  • 2009/2010 final between Southampton and Carlisle United had an attendance of 73, 476 with the Cumberland News in Carlisle reporting that, “Gate receipts, prize money and merchandising took the club’s windfall from the competition to above £500,000”.

    Thats a lot of dough.
