The JPT - How should we approach it ?

edited October 2011 in General Charlton

Our next game is in the JPT, we must, according to the rules, play " 6 players who started the last league game, or 6 of 11 who have made the most appearences this season". For us it is pretty much the same thing. My questions are these; do we need it? Do we bother taking it seriously? Can (or should we have) we do (done) a Manchester United and not entered at all (and I mean the year they didn't enter the FA cup, not that Manchester United haven't entered the JPT for all you pendants out there!)

We can rest 5 first teamers, who are they? For me BWP, Hollands, Stephens are shoo-ins for a rest, plus two others, but lets remember Pritchard and Bover are injured! Wagstaff could make way to give Green game time, would our lack of centre halves get Doherty a game?

I really think we should find some way of not being in this, ideally we'll go up, and not have to bother next year. Looking around, it seems that flaunting these rules gets a £5000 pound fine, so lets say 1000 of us agree to turn up on Wednesday, knowing the club will pick an 11 "illegal" team for this competition, I reckon the club makes a loss from hosting home games in this competition anyway, would be interesting to find out how much, another reason why I think we're better off without it, does anyone seriously think we'll win it?

Again, from looking around the web it seems that alot of managers disagree, or could do without these selection rules, so who exactly benefits (aside from the winner) benefits from the JPT?

I throw it open to the floor......

  • Bit like the Kent cup,and without a reserve league, it gives fringe players game time. At least 5 first team regulars can be ommitted, more with subs (Sheff Wed!)
  • Yep ,it's an embarassing competition that I don't want on our cv cos it'll be a reminder of how low we have sank

Rules is rules so gotta rest our 5 most important players and do a megson and sub 3 of the others who we don't want to play
But I'm sure charlton fans would start crying about that cos they can't see the bigger picture and might have paid five or ten quid and wanna see the first team blah blah blah
But no idea who to rest !!
    In SCP we trust
  • green will be getting his game time in league games i reckon
  • Wouldn't been a bad thing if we get to WEMBLY !
  • Maybe summat like this..

    ...............................Sullivan.......................

    .....Solly.....Morro.........Doc/Taylor.......Evina/Wiggins.......

    .....Green.....Stephens......Alonso.....Jackson....

    .............Hayes......Kermit.....

You're missing the point, in the Kent cup we can play who we like, kids reserves , anyone, if any of the 1st team are anywhere near the Kent cup then somethings gone horribly wrong! The Sheff Weds thing was more of where I was coming from, if other teams piss around, can/should we?

Taylor or Wiggins would have to start
  • Possibly why I pointed The Sheff Wed thing out eldavide
  • I really don't know how SCP will work this, but im sure whatever he'll do it will be genius as ever!

What I'm asking is should we do it? It's a risk if players subsequently get injured in the match, the bit about the Kent cup was pointless though so don't get sarky!

Again, if he put out 11 kids and flaunted the rules, we get hammered, will we be happy? If we play fairly, we go through, but key players end up injured, would we be happy? I really think the whole competition is pointless!

Go for the win in everything we compete in, but ensure league is priority.  So no BWP, Jackson, Holland, Solly Morrison.

    Def play :-  Kermit, Green

    Hamer
    Hughes Cort Doherty Wiggins

    Green, Alonso, Stephens, Wagstaff
    Kermit Hayes

It maybe a pointless competition but we are in it and I bet if we get to wembley we'll take more than the 2-5,000 that will be there on Wednesday.

Yes we couldhave injuries, we did last season with Dailly but it also gives the opportunity for us to give proper game time toother players.

needs 1 more "1st team regular". We are in it because we have to be? Again I give you the Manchester United analogy, let's not enter in the first place! IF we get to Wembley, we'll take loads, IF,we are currently four games away, again I ask do we need them? Four more games where these same rules apply? Don't think so myself
  • If we have to play in this pointless game (Which we do), and we have to choose 6 first teamers (Which we do). Then I would choose the 6 players who will cause the least exposure if they get Injured,

So that's Hayes and Waggy (both of who may not be first choice by next Saturday), Hammer,Taylor, Morrow, Wiggins.

The next most important thing is that the team know that under no circumstances are they to try to win, To that end I would play Taylor in goal and fill in the other 5 places with Popo, Francis, Hughes, Euell and Smith. This will have the added advantage that Taylor will get a game and Powel can decide if we can start naming 5 outfield players in the league matches.

    Taylor

    Francis,Hughes,Morrow,Wiggins

    Waggy, Euell Smith, Hammer

    Hayes, Popo

I nwould then Substitute Hammer for one of our dev midfielders (Bover/Davidson) early in the game.

  • Players get injured in training, we seem to have lost more players over the years to those injuries.  However,I understand the point you are making, personally for the reasons I have said I would like us to win this.

You are right about extra 1st team regular forgot Hughes was an ongoing sub.

Would hate to see CP do a megson.

As a matter of interest doyou feelthe same way about the FA Cup ?
  • Absolutely love the idea of Taylor in goal! This is the best suggestion, and would show that we have contempt for the competition without breaking the rules!

    Love It!

My point being, it gives the fringe players game time . Where does sarky come into it? rotate the 6 players, BWP being an obvious player to omit  for example. Just enjoy today's reult:-)
  • No because the FA cup doesn't have the rule governing who you can pick! Plus it's not restricted to Leagues one and two. I would like to see Poole Town at The Valley as much as I would a Prem team, Palace, Millwall, West Ham. I don't understand who benefits from the JPT, we'll play most of the teams in the league, a "glamour tie" would be Gillingham.

Would you therefore play a different starting 11 regardless of opposition? (As we did in Carling Cup)

We are doing that more productively in arranging behind closed doors friendlies, we can get fringe players fit, try kids, maybe even play trialists, the "6 players to rotate" don't get close, protecting them for the league.Putting Sheff Weds in brackets, then claiming that was your major point, came across as sarcastic to me, apologies if I misinterpreted.

I would like us to pick who we like, I guess Powell would do that, I asked if 1000 of us would stump up the fiver on Weds, knowing we'd watch 11 changes, which would cover the fine I reckon we'd get hit with. I'd be happy with that, just 999fans and the club to convince!

Haha deal! Went to the D&R one, soulless!

You mean in the FA Cup don't you? Not the JPT! OOh Tricky! I suppose if we made the 3rd round, our league position, injuries and form would be alot more crucial than when the 1st round comes along. We may face the possibility of Brentford at home in the FA cup, with the thought what's more important, league or cup? We'll make a hell of alot more money in the FA cup than the JPT, and we can pick whoever! Maybe 4 or 5 changes, especially as we're light at centre half in my opinion
  • Put Waggy in goal
  • Would go for Hamer over Sullivan, more important to rest outfield players than a keeper.

    Hamer

    Solly Doc Morrison Evina

    Green Hughes Stephens Wagstaff

    Kermit Euell

    Sub Stephens after 23 seconds

  • The bulk of the changes I'd make would be in defence, defenders are more likely to get bookings and we don't need stupid injuries and suspensions being handed out as a result of this match.

    --------------Hamer------------

    Francis-Doherty-Morrison-Evina

    Green-Hughes-Stephens-Jackson

    -------Benson---Hayes-------
