People on here throughout the night have called for the Govt to bring the Army in to help out. As an ex squaddie, the main problem I see in this is they don't have the training to deal with crowd handling in a passive capacity. Yes, we'd all like to see them pile in and kick the shit out of them, but the nanny's that run our state deem that to be excessive. During my time in the Army, we were still very much involved with street conflicts in NI so this type of training was carried out on a regular basis. Unfortunately, this is no longer the case.

Totally agree. Using the Army in an internal security role (i.e. in support of  the civil police) is a world away from normal soldiering. It's very specialised and requires a lot of time-consuming training. You can't just send a regiment that's been trained for a "hot" war onto the streets of London. If you did there would be carnage and we would be no better than a lot of dictatorships.

I can't understand why the police can't use tasers on the rioters - I am sure this would be effective.

Paul, from BBC News, looters have set a party shop alight, and the police are worried about the helium canisters they use for inflating the baloons exploding. That's why they're suggesting people evacuate.
  • I just can't sleep, it's like something out of a nightmare. Can hear the sirens and police helicopter and smell the burning from my mums in Plumstead.

We mate recently transferred to Woolwich Fire station. I hope to God he's ok.

    fucking hell

Fires on Canvey Island apparently, coming from the long road area. Firetrucks and police cars rushing about. Multiple sources on facebook.
(Cant see from here, I live on the nice side of the island)
  • Leroy how's things in croydon
  • Had a riot here in Peckham earlier in the evening, made my journey home from the proms difficult. Two shops 30 secs walk from me broken into, just straight forward crimanal robbery nothing poitical in it. Anarchy on the streets as old bill have lost control, and will they ever really regain it, or will we all be living on a tinder box from now on.

He's probably sat on his doorstep with a samurai sword.
  • Keep joking about it kicking off down here on the Kent coast but im half expecting sirens soon!

  • Can someone explain to me, what exactly is the point of having a police force? The Old Bill were not quite so reticent to kick the shit out of the miners back in the 1980's or even the students earlier this year, were they? And yet they don't seem quite so keen now.

As for the "government" what a total disgrace and an embrassment. How can you have The PM, Chancellor and Lord Mayor all overseas on holiday at the same time leaving "Call Me Nick" in charge? It was obvious from last week that this was going to get serious and yet the Eton boys all stayed on their holidays. Nice.

There needs to be a clear voice of leadership to be seen to be in charge and there just isn't one and that's unforgivable, God knows I am not bloody Tory but there is no way that Thatcher/Tebbitt would have let such a void of leadership take place.

This is the last thing the country needs in its current economic climate and there just seems to be an absolute void in leadership.

Maybe we need to outsource our policing to the Chinese?

  • Sky News are playing the Woolwich video from earlier (where the crowd advance on the police) and saying it's Toxteth in Merseyside!
  • Ormiston, with the greatest respect mate, cut out the overtly political stuff. It's been done already on this thread and it doesn't get us anywhere at this particular moment in time.
    Cheers.
