Ormiston, with the greatest respect mate, cut out the overtly political stuff. It's been done already on this thread and it doesn't get us anywhere at this particular moment in time.
Cheers.
No political point-scoring here, mate, I am equally appalled at the antics of Livingstone trying to score political points as chaos reigns.
The point is that there is just a complete absence of a single voice of leadership to talk to the city/country and re-assure them that the government is in control.
I havd had BBC London on and 90% of the callers are absolutely mystified that the police are standing by and watching people loot and pillage and doing nothing about it. Its incredible.
There is going to be a furious blowback from this and those in power and the police are going to be right in the firing line, there has been a total absence of authority.
Anywhere else in Europe, the water cannon would have been out and rubber bullets, at least, would be used. So much for the good old "British" democracy!
I understand the Met are stretched dealing with multiple incidents over a large area, but West Mercia Police have made 90 odd arrests after one afternoon of relatively minor incidents (compared to what's going on the capital), what the hell are the Met doing to have only made twice the amount of arrests? Although an unmaned plice station in Handsworth is apparently a blaze.
I'm just gobsmacked at what is going on. I'd be bleeding heart liberal in the opinion of a lot people on here but I don't see how anyone can seek to justify this. I know times are tough for a lot of people but this is a totally disproportionate reaction.
Perhaps an ugly manifestation of the increasingly consumerist society we live in, sad that we've reached he stage that the idea of getting your hands on the latest trainers or a new TV justifies civil unrest.
too namby pamby in this country. Get the army in and water cannon the effing lot of them, use tazers, stun guns etc etc. Getting sick of our society.
Good idea - also get some rotting old oil tankers and use them as prison ships for when these scum finaly get there cumupance if the courts have enough balls!
Ed Milliband has apparentluy cancelled his holiday too, but he won't be back tonight either and he's only in Cornwall. Quite what he think's he's going to do I don't know but I suppose he has to do the PR friendly thing.
smiffyboy, im in fulham....cars have been set on fire and loads of youths have been moving up from north end road towards chelsea for a while now. definately didnt think it would reach over here
Feel physically sick with anger and worry. I go to uni in ealing (university of west london) and some of my mates are in their houses there after just moving in. They're hearing loads of noise, one of my mates went out to see if she could get any pics and just heard a load of racist abuse coming at her (she's white). She sounds terrified. So worried for my housemate as well who's sitting for our house and is all alone. Apparently they've broken into and set fire to part of the uni. So, so angry right now.
Now i'm guessing a lot of the parents don't give a sh*t but if my 15/16 year old was still out at this time of night it's pretty obvious he'd be involved in something to do with all this and i'd be on the phone making sure the little pr*ck was home indoors sharpish. What the f*ck are these parents doing? 700 youths roaming Woolwich at midnight, a massive gang heading for Westfield at gone 1am, surely there are some parents out there that care what their kids are up to?
Seen a pictures of a large group of muslims who like the Turks have protected their "area" can't be bothered to find the pic, if you want it look for it on twitter. Those bloody immagrants standing up and protecting our area aye.
Riot police on standby in various parts of the UK including Manchester, Bristol and Nottingham. Along with the confirmed disturbances in Birmingham and Liverpool.

What's he going to do about it? Threaten to haul them before the Labour Party National Executive Committee?

Sickening behaviour.

Would be great to hear of more people behaving like those Turks.
It probably wouldn't need to come to violence just enough right inded people clearly saying stop now would likely be enough to disperse the mobs.
