Powell could be sacked?

  • I'd like to join in the Bing lovefest. Great post.
  • The pressure on Powell at the start of next season, from supporters and the board alike, is probably going to be greater than any manager at the club has faced for many a year,if not ever.

I sincerely hope he's got the minerals.

  • The Sheff Wed fan I talked to today told me that they bought lots of players in January...and then plummeted down the league.  I'm glad we didn't try that as well or we would have been in twice as much cack as we are now!

+1 for the Bing fan club BTW....

  • Nice post Bing, though sadly i have the opposite view to:

"There is nothing in what I have seen with CPs time in charge that
alters my view that he can build a team which will get us out of this
    god-forsaken division next season."

Sadly, i'm increasingly seeing signs to dispute that. Like Goonerhater accurately said though, we're effectively (again) boxed into a corner.

AFKA, we all surely travel in hope, some of us wearing more of a hair shirt than others?

Boxed into a corner - really? We were boxed into a corner when Parky was in charge - remember he was the manager we couldn't afford to sack after sacking the manager we couldn't afford. Those were the days when we were boxed into a corner and right up against the ropes.

Everything I have heard coming from inside the club suggests that we have much more wriggle room. That means, to my way of thinking, that they have the financial clout to be able to move Chris aside if things don't start to go right.

Even if I had heard nothing, logic suggests they can change tack if required - why do I say this? Its because they went for Chris. They will have been aware that there is no guarantee, especially from a rookie. If you were so strapped for cash that you only had one shot at it, you'd probably select only from experienced, track record decent managers. When Howe turned us down, they could have continued until they got somebody from the existing managerial pool. Instead they went for a stand out but untried player. To me that shows strength not weakness, confidence not insecurity and resources not poverty.

Naturally only time will tell. The result of Chris' involvement thus far, and taken at face value, cannot be argued as being transformatory. I just think the real work starts now.
  • Deadred - Working with players in negotiating with their employers is very different from being players boss and having to lead and motivate them, so no hole in my argument there, reasoned or not.
  • I think your definition of man management and mine differ. Its not just about laedership and motivation its also about how you interact with people and get them on your side so come on Kap10 admit it, his role in man management was a little bit more involved than just dealing with the PFA's admin staff. This would of course have also developed his Inter Personal and Negotiating skills which I omitted from his plus points. Be that as it may all of those skills will be tested to the full over the next 6 months I'm prepared to stick by him and you have reservations and thats where we beg to differ.
  • We could go into definitions of leadership and motivation and relationship to man management and we would probably find we agree more than we disagree and its probably best suited to a debate held on linkedin, before too many here fall asleep.

I don't think anywhere I have said we should lose CP, I do have reservations and after hearing him last night I do fear he has been set up by the spivs and I do hope he succeeds.
