There's more chance of Messi partnering BWP up front than CP being sacked...who writes this drivel! The owners have picked "their man" in Chris Powell and will back him with "his team" and not the bunch of misfits he picked up from Parkinson (who was lucky to last as long as he did and would have been fired with Pardew if we could have afforded it). Powell will, we all hope, be given the funds to build a team capable of both promotion and championship survival (at a minimum). Slater said this again in his programme notes on Saturday. CP will be backed and given the summer to build a passing team capable of exciting football and promotion. If we are in this position and the end of next season then the People headlines will make more sense...!
I doubt that CP will be sacked, there are signs that he is putting his stamp on the way he wants his team to play, let's hope that come November, with the a few additions to the team that it is bearing fruit.
The thing that gets my goat is that many posters on here think he inherited a team of 'dross'. IMHO we have had a squad this season that were very capable of making the play offs at least and as I have said on here before 90% of all managers in this division would have loved to have had our squad at the start.
Can't see it - reckon they will give him until october / november but i'd be happy if they did it now and we can just then get on with re building the team. Nothing he has done so far has given me and i wouldn't have thought, the board, any confidence that he is the man to give some substantial funds to.
Parret/Stweart/BWP/Sullivan/Bessone as well as having Ecclestone available to him. He's had better players available to him but results just don't seem to be improving...he'll get a few games next season to prove himself, but after about 5 or 6 games if things haven't improved I can't see Slater hanging around.
@BigRedEvil. All the major issues with the team all season has been the defence which has looked like a disaster from day one. Bessone was the only real change made and he was also injured for a while. Not sure why CP didn't make more changes there. Perhaps it just wasn't possible. All the other CP signings looked better than what we had which I think augers well.
Agreed SHG, albeit with the caveat Powell had more money and could aim a bit higher. That's not to say that he hasn't brought in good players, but it's likely any manager would prefer Powell's budget over Parkinsons. I think the defence is generally a harder situation to sort in all fairness, we needed a good strong all-rounder/leader type, and if they're good enough to fit all that criteria then odds are they're already playing for someone- Ward was an exception of course.
I think once we know which players are being released we'll know how high Powell and the board are aiming.
I can't see any truth in that artical but what I can't stop thinking about is, Will Chris Powell be capable of bringing In the right players? Say if we do have a £3 - 4m warchest this summer, will he know how to spend it? Because lets face it he buys a load of crap players he will get the sack. The aim is promotion is it not? I don't know he is the right man to take us up let alone spend our money.
I think some people are going to be surprised how little we will be spending. £4m in this league is a ludicrous amount of money to spend to get out of league one.
Only time will tell GAZ no point worrying yourself silly. its a results business CP knows that and will be doing his damnedest to get it right. All decent teams have to have a solid spine so keeper Elliott / Sullivan, Centre backs - your guess is as good as mine now big Mig is apparently going, up front BWP and a good target man alondside him. The rest you fill in round the edges simples eh!
4 million may well be too much but we need 9 players through training ground gates if promotion is an expectation next season which I presume and hope it is. It's going to cost at least half of that I reckon and probably more. Much less and we could find ourselves falling very short.
@Deadred I agree Its a results business and I do like the attack minded style of play CP is installing, we do however need the right players to his system.
We need to manage our expectation levels. Promotion is important but not the be all and end all. PROGRESS is the key word, a more solid team at the back that can also entertain when going forward and if that takes us back into the top six so much the better because this league sucks.
Disagree Deadred. Promotion IS (or should be) the be all and end all next season. Parkinson had us in the playoff positions (whether deserved or not) Powell came in to get us promoted. I don't give a monkey's nuts how prettily we play, if Powell doesn't better the success (or failure, depending on perspective) of the previous manager then he has failed, pure and simple. He did not do the job he was brought in specifically to do.
Bit short sighted Newbie with any planning there is short, medium and long term strategy Rome wasnt built in a day give the bloke a chance. Plus I do care how we play Up and under is for egg chasers!
Not really. By the end of next season, Powell will have been using his players in his system, no more looking backwards it will be down to his choices alone. I cannot see anyone at the club having the short term strategy of staying in this poxy league. I'm not demanding a Norwich-style back-to-back promotion, but I do want a sign we have actually moved forwards- even a play-off place is to be expected, not hoped for. I'd much rather see nice football and pretty passing, but that's a secondary wish. Arsenal play fancy football, Man U play much more direct and basic, and which of them won the Premiership?
Most people are backing Powell out of sheer embarrassment, they are the 'Parkinson Out' brigade. I loved the man as a player, but to give him Parkinsons job was a joke. This is a business, and there is no room for emotion. I wasn't surprised Parkinson went, but I thought we might bring in some experience. To give someone their first crack at management because he used to play for us was a poor business decision. ( IT WAS, THAT HAS BEEN PROVEN, NOT UP FOR DEBATE ).
The 'Parkinson out' brigade hailed Powell's arrival almost to a man. I think we would have been in the Championship had we stuck with Parkinson. I wasn't his biggest fan, but he knew the league and he was getting some good results. Adding BWP may well have sealed the deal. Powell will only get 7-10 games next season, I hope he knows what he is doing as nothing he has done so far can convince me otherwise. This has been the worst season ever, and I am afraid CP hasn't helped.
Neither of them yet Man U could lose to Blackpool and Blackburn highley unlikey but you posed the question. Who said anything about pretty football I said enternaing which can mean quick decisive counter attacking as oppposed a route 1 up and at em style. Dont get me wrong I want out of this league as much as the rest of us but lets show a little patience for now.
Our finish this season has taken us to pretty much rock bottom. The only way is up and that progress must be fairly swift. Promotion next season although might not be financially essential you can bet your boots that the new owners will look at promotion as an absolute priority unlike this seasons statement that it would be a bonus. Failure again is in my view unlikely to be tolerated but talk of CP getting 10 games is in my view wide of the mark. I think he will get next season unless there is a catastrophic set of performances which i think and hope is unlikely.
I would love to see pretty passing football but right now we absolutely have to get out of this division.
I'd take seeing us hoof it box to box for 90 minutes week in week out and win 30 games 1-0 if that's what it takes. We can ponder aesthetics and grandiose ambitions in the Championship, what we need is results regardless of who is in charge. I think Slater might have missed the point.
@ISawLeaburnScore I disagree. I do want good football played. Good football means good players and good coaching. Play better football than the opposition and on the whole you will win more games than you lose. There are always exceptions as we all know.
Each to their own, that's what it's all about, opinions, but I think from my perspective we've crossed the realms of anything other than results and financial security mattering.
If Powell brings in the players he wants and the results don't change then obviously he's not cut out for the job. Jury's still out on him now as long as our creative midfielders are McCormack or whichever version of Therry Racon shows up that day and our centre backs have the combined age of dinosaur. Having said that I'm interested to know just how much money people think we have for next season. I was under the impression it was going to be above the usual Charlton figure of nothing, but £3m sounds huge. If Powell gets that figure and fails then whether or not he's sacked should be a simple decision
Passing football is not the same as 'good' football. You can make thirty passes in your own half, denying the opposition a sniff, and not score at all. By the same token you can go from one end of the pitch to the other in three or four passes (keeper to CB/Midfielder, midfielder to winger, winger sticks in a cross to the striker) and stick the ball in the net at the end. Obviously it wouldn't always work that way but you understand the principle. Lumping it up in the air is not the answer, but unless your Arsenal- or Barcelona-level quality, neither is ballet with a football.
'By the same token you can go from one end of the pitch to the other in three or four passes (keeper to CB/Midfielder, midfielder to winger, winger sticks in a cross to the striker) and stick the ball in the net at the end'
That would be quick decisive counter attacking then! Good to see we are on the same wavelength at last.
Norwich, Brighton and Southampton have shown you can get out of this league playing good football, you also need players who are going to muck in and have desire to win, hopefully we can get those in.
On the £4m thing, it's our wage bill which is around that level, Sheffield Wednesday and Southampton pay more for example, Huddersfield about the same. So if the wage bill stays at that kind of level, with the 3 players who make up a third of it, either shifted on or on less money, we'll be competitive
