Red cards as a centre back are obviously part of the territory, getting sent off for a last ditched tackle that has to be made are excusable but a player of his ability and experience should not be sent off for retaliation, really didnt expect this from dailly, quite dissapointed and as others have said, i feel this may be where dailly has to think he is passed it.
[cite]Posted By: The Red Robin[/cite]I think you're all mad writing off Dailly. Open your eyes people, there's bigger problems at this club than Dailly.
The biggest problem at Charlton is the defence. He is a part of that big problem and Captain.
Dailly is an exceptional defender and it is a shame that in the last couple of seasons he has been paired with complete donkeys. It has been a long season and he snapped, It happens. I don't blame him at all.

Agreed, while I also agree the defence is a problem I think there have been a lot worse than Dailly and the midfield have not helped, a poor midfield is also to blame for a poor defensive record.
I think people are also overlooking him as a captain, yes he didn't set a good example today but in his time at the club, as a player, how could you not look at him and be impressed that someone at that age who has played at a high level is able to and has the desire to play in as many games as he has for us.
Of the regular back 5 he's the only one I'd like to see featuring in more than a handful of games next year , not that that is saying much but given a choice I'd rather he was a squad member than any of the others

Dailly hasn't often been sent off during his career. He wasn't sent off last season but now he's suddenly a liability with a terrible disciplinary record?
Haven't seen the incident yet but we've had players in the past fall to the ground holding their face or rolling around after less. Would we rather he reacted like that?
In our position I don't see how we'll attract these Championship standard players we're hoping for without offering good money. But then you'd have to question if they're coming here for right reasons. We could do a lot worse than keeping Dailly as back up.
Powell on the sending off. Sounds like a ridiculous attempt at a tackle on Dailly.
Reid was only booked for his part in the events, and Powell conceded: "By the letter of the law, if you retaliate you have to go.
"When you look at the incident leading up to it I can't say you are justified in doing it but you have to look at the history Christian has had this year when he broke his jaw.
"When you see the contact by the player, his foot was high and he has caught Christian in the face, along down the shoulder and he has got the scars to prove it.
"You can see why he was angry but of course when you have things like that you have to do your best to keep your cool. Unfortunately Christian didn't and paid for it.
No one condones Dailly's reaction and retaliation, but look again at the context.
Read Chris Powell's quote above - and put yourself in Dailly's boots.
I can't believe people are so judgemental and dismissive of Dailly, when given similar circumstances most of us would have reacted the same way.
And I stand by what I said about letting Dailly leave ....... if he wants to stay, we'd be crazy to let his ability, influence and experience slip through our fingers.
Watched it over a few times on the fl show "highlights" and totally understand Dailly`s instant reaction although not saying it was right. That challenge was bang out of order and there was clear intent to catch Dailly. You can see him put his full force into that challenge. He could have lost an eye! Any honest footballer would have just pulled out and let Dailly head the ball clear, there was no way Reid was going to get the ball. That c**t needs to take a good look at himself. He overstepped the mark!
That challenge was a straight red card offence at any level of the game!
[cite]Posted By: Oggy Red[/cite] ...given similar circumstances most of us would have reacted the same way.
If that is a true, another blow to my diminishing faith in human nature!
And has anyone got an answer to my earlier question: who was the last Charlton player to get three red cards in one season? Indeed, has it ever happened before at all?
It was a clumsy high challange by Reid on Dailly - we see this in leagues 1 and 2 every week due to the standard of football. It wasn't an 'attack' on our player, it was a crap challange for the ball by a crap player. Can't really see how it was a red card offence - Reid was booked and conceded a free kick, which was probably about right - and yes, I was there! The reaction from Christian Dailly had to be a red card and whether we agree with his reaction, due to a previous injury, is another thing.
We need to make a lot of changes to our defence this summer, but I don't think Dailly is the most immediate of those changes. Apart from the fact that he's been our best an most consistent defender this year (does anybody contest this?), he is highly experienced, highly motivated and can add a lot to the team in terms of helping to bring other players on. Unless we have the money, and the opportunity, to buy four top quality centre backs I think CD should stay.

No idea but had one of those red cards been last season and two this season it wouldn't seem to bad would it?
Dailly doesn't have a history of getting 2 or 3 red cards every season. In fact, when did he last get a red card before this season?
Dreadful challenge and dreadful reaction, both players should have been sent off. Experienced or not and whatever the reasons why, you should not react like that. As for his last game in a Charlton shirt, I hope not, a defensive rebuild is our highest priority and his knowledge and experience will be priceless.

Paul, if Reid had gone in toe first, as if he was trying to flick the ball away, I'd agree with you, but look at the replays. He's extending his leg forward with the entire sole of his boot parallel with Dailly's face, and it was only luck that he didn't do him some serious damage. Even if there wasn't any intent to injure Dailly, which we could argue about until the cows come home, it was a reckless, dangerous challenge and deserved a red card itself.

Okay - that's your opinion and we can argue all day, but Reid was not given a red card and that's all that matter really. Nothing will change the end result or the score!!

[cite]Posted By: PaulCAFC[/cite]Okay - that's your opinion and we can argue all day, but Reid was not given a red card and that's all that matter really. Nothing will change the end result or the score!!
Oh, I'm not arguing that, just saying that Dailly's reaction is understandable, even if it wasn't wise.
From what I've seen and read I think Christian Dailly is a decent guy and I think that he'll be extremely disappointed with himself for his reaction. If we look at his other red cards - away at Leyton Orient was a mistimed tackle but he was at least trying to show an example to his team mates about chasing every ball. His second in my opinion was never a red card and if it'd been a Man U/Chelsea player they'd have appealled it and got it rescinded. That only leaves the third. He's been unlucky and I'd certainly have him back next year, and had we had better centre halves this season, I'd have liked to have seen in him play in the Semedo position once or twice.
3 sendings off in one season doesn't look good from the new owners point of view i would have thought , our defence is simply not good enough at the moment to get promoted next season , and needs improving significantly , if the budget allows i'd keep Dailly in a squad / Player coach role rather than a first team automatic for every game , he has too much experience to give rather than being chucked on the scrap heap, but we're not the ones making the decisions.
For all those criticising Dailly for his reaction :-
If you were standing in the pub and someone kicked you in the face with the sole of their foot, personally I wouldn't blame you if you retaliated & under these circumstances, I can't blame Christian. I don't condone it mind you.
Also, thought he was a tad unlucky at Orient. To me it was a mistimed tackle.
Have to say his 1st was at home to Bournemouth, I think & I can't remember that one.
We should be able to sign a better centre half than Dailly in the Summer. Not sure where I stand with him. I like his style and admire him for being a decent player at his age. But he does make terrible mistakes. The cock-up against Swindon probably cost Parky his job and he was poor against Millwall last year (but not as bad as Llera). So it is addios from me but with a big thank you for doing a decent job overall.

Human nature is to retaliate in defence when attacked. FACT
Well, Dailly was hardly defending himself. And it all rather depends on the code by which you try to live your life, doesn't it ?
I try to live mine (not always successfully) by the words in Matthew 5:39 : ''If someone strikes you on the right cheek, turn to him the other also” .
So did Richard Rufus, who I believe has preached on the text in his role as a minister in the Kingsway International Christian Centre. RR played the game hard - indeed, I recall him getting a red card in his very first premier league match. But I do not recall him ever retaliating against a player who might have wronged him with a Glaswegian kiss.
If you don't share the same faith , here's another quotation, this time from Gandhi:
''An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind.''
As for Christian Dailly's previous good record, I'm sorry but he has a infamous inability to control himself.
Have you all forgotten the notorious game when Scotland lost a crucial Euro qualifier to Germany a few years ago ? Berti Vogts was being interviewed, but all you could hear was Dailly drowning him out by screaming "Cheats! F***ing cheats! F***ing dirty cheats!" . I think he was probably captain that day as well. What an example to set!
He might have got away with it, too, because he was off camera - but Vogts identified and named him as the foul-mouthed absuer during the interview.
As for the question of whether any other Charlton player has ever been sent off three times in a season, I presume the silence from our in-house CL historians means that the answer is 'no'. Rather a shame that Christian can't play again this season, as it deprives him of putting himself and CAFC in the record books by equalling what I believe is Cantona's record-breaking four red cards in one season.
He won't be here come August, I'm convinced. Whatever Citizen Chris says publicly about the incident , he will not have been impressed, as he shares the same 'turn the other cheek' faith as Richard Rufus.
For our final sermon this Sunday, let me give you the words of our manager himself:
''I live my life this way because of the Lord and what has happened, and what he done to save me, and save everyone.
It gives me a great joy to know that the Lord is around me at all times, and I can pray for things whether it is good or bad that’s happened in my football career, because that does happen; you have a good game, you have a bad game. But having that Christian faith just helps me along with the good and the bad times, I know he is there at all times.''
I don't want to get all sanctimonious on your asses. But it sickens me when people not only defend Dailly but Oggy Red says most of us would have reacted with the same mindless violence. I can honestly say that I don't believe anyone of my acquaintance would have done so.

If our midfield kicked a few League 1 gorillas occasionally rather than fall over squealing at the ref, we might be higher up the table.

Undoubtedly a combination of the style of football in this league, the quality of the players around him and age catching up with him
