Don't think so clem_snide in my opinion, think they will be preoccupied with dubai's economic climate, and besides... I think we are too removed from that kind of investement...you really have to be in "waiting room" to the Prem aka. the championship to attract the major players.
But maybe I'm just been cautious/dismissive. I don't want to believe it's anyone with a lot of dollar because I don't want to be disappointed if it isn't. I don't want to have hopes of championship football and a mid-long term Prem push to feel let down by someone coming in who is going to pursue an organic strategy, securing our long-term future and allowing us to make it up and stay up and lay anchor. Whoever it is I want them to have a fair crack of the whip so I am trying to rationalise and distance myself from thoughts of identity/capability as much as I can!
Mmmm. Clem I have that inkling as well.... 1) Why is this so hush hush? 2) we are they confident that this is the first time that we actually name a DATE !! (and they have undergone all the hurdles?) We have never gone with a date before.. why name a date unless you are 100% convinced that the buyers are about to cross the dots and tees. It smells as though "they" have been here before and want to "re-look" at the books ths time. If you go through all the links Varney has been linked with wealthy buyers in a mult milliond pound deal. I sw this is an old link from 2yrs ago BUT it links with wise and jiminez (but then Zabeel was with that front). Very hypotheticaly could it be that Varney is the link for Murray and Jiminez and Wise for the Arab owners... ?
It smells off "hang on a mo Charlton are 2nd in the table.. if we don' buy them now at x price, if they go up then their value will go and their price plus to get them up it only needs nominal investment"
I personally feel that the MAIN reason thay they walked away before was that they didn't like the state of our club.. Varney has come in looked at the club... helped Charlton with Charltos consultants to reshape the club and they have come back fingers crossed.
This is a link i read yesterday and it could well be the man behind this...

Think this may underplay our potential attractiveness in the market place.
I tend to agree more with this:

We SHOULD go up this season. And have you looked at the Championship table tonight? Leeds and Norwich, both of whom were playing in div three last season, are now sitting in play-off places, which puts them in spitting distance of the premiership.
Potentially there is no reason why, with an investment that needs only to be relatively modest, we cannot be sitting where Leeds and Norwich are now, come this time next season.
I agree with you incorruptible addick,.... part of me thinks it is local busimen that Varney knows ie that irish fella etc etc and a group of wealthy people coming together.... but i give more theory on the arabs again.. if that is true.. they have now tried twice "alledgly" and the man on a search has been trying to buy clubs for ages but didnt get liverpool, arsenal etc but has now got itch feeling that "LONG TERM" this is a good deal for him and us

..............
The necessary investment to get us out of L1 and into the CCC neednot be great, but I think we are going to need a major overhaul next season.
There's no way any of our four current centre-backs are up to that level, Francis at RB is competent at L1 level, butI'd hate to go into the CCC with him. Ok, Solly might be pushing for a starting place by then, but we'll need back up. At LB we have Youga, but will he ever play for us again? And we'll need another keeper as Worner being back up to Elliot leaves us a bit weak. Potentially that's around seven players we'll need in defence. Striking wise Anyinsah is capable of stepping up - but Akpo, Benson and Abbott are all L1 class so we'll need to buy in a goal scorer or two. At least our midfield looks capable of playing in the CCC.
Have to say I agree with your comments about the squad for the most part BFR... however, to play devil's advocate... what about Millwall, dare I say? They have not exactly had a mass clear out and at times this season they have looked more than capable as darkhorses, which to me would be pretty much my hope for a potential return to the championship in the early stages... apart from perhaps Morrison were any of their players clearly CCC class on paper?
True, seems they realise they went in a bit small in numbers/quality and want to make sure they don't get sucked downwards in what is a very competitive/close/momentum-based division.
Just interesting that they maintained their confidence from the end of the season and showed it can be a mental game too, they started like a train.
Well people I have who is behind the bid, when I was in Canberra (Australia) I was at the airport when I meet Paul Hogan and Russell Crowe and they saw my Charlton shirt so we started talking and without actually saying they were behind the bid they said Charlton were to be taken over and with Hogan not having to pay millions in tax he is using that to buy charlton and Crowe wants a football team with a compact ground so he can bring his rugby league team over to play friendlys. It true all true FACT
I don't see where in all this that they'll get any sort of decent return
All this oh we're a good club to invest in bollox I don't see , I can't see any club with footballs current top heavy wage structure as a decent place to earn money
The higher you go up the more wages and costs you incur , yes the dough is monstrous in the premiership but atm unless you pay top dollar for players your chances of staying up for over 3 seasons are nigh on impossible
Blackpool are trying to do it on the cheap but even jason euell is on 30k a week there as a reward for getting them promoted
The ideal scenario I think is the west brom yoyo affect where you go up down and don't end up loading up with too many big long term contracts that are unsustainable outside of the prem for too long
You only have to look at ourselves (so many were in denial once the mail pointed out how bad a shape we were in) and leeds and see the catastrophic consequences of poorly run clubs who over budgeted
Hopefully the new owners will have the ability to say no to whichever manager we have if we get to the promised land and not let them steamroll them with a load of shit expensive unsustainable signings like murray did which nearly brought the club to its knees
Euell on 30k a week... santa calus tell you that did he Oh aah....
I always love your refreshing, positive, balanced outlook..
They are not putting money in to lose it are they? I would also invisage they have the facts as opposed to a fans outside view ...
I know we you arent gonna be happy until we are in the europa league woth 3k away fans everyweek, but this definately good news... makes us sustainable for a further 2 yrs at least I say...
Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum head of zabeel won the gold medal in Equestrian at the Asian Games. The olympic equestrian for 2012 is being held in greenwich park , therefore it must mean that zabeel will be are new owners. Is there better place to keep his horses , than the lush green grass of the Valley pitch,
I'm guessing at a Charlton fan whos has made his money in the city. He will have a buy the club in league 1, with an exit plan of selling the club within 5 years whilst in the premier league.
Wow I am enjoying this wild speculation. Russell Crowe & Paul Hogan! Bill Curbs! Zabeel again. Varney will not leak to anyone, so it is going to be a long three weeks.

The original announcement said by the 24th so hopefully it will be sorted sooner rather than later

If PV et al manage to keep things a secret until Christmas Eve, which is now just 19 days away, and based on the fact that this thread is receiving circa 66 comments a day (264/4 days) then this REAL takeover thread will be standing at 1518 comments by the time the buyers are announced!! The speculaton will be in meltdown!!!
OK so its Sunday morning no match yesterday and I'm bored!!
Why not AEG (Anschutz Entertainment Group) the Dome & 'Beckham Academy' owners (currently involved in Spur's attempts to 'spoil' West Ham's takeover of the Olympic Stadium)?
Anschutz has been rumoured as interested in Charlton over the past couple of years & was rumoured to be involved with Varney last year (& Brian Jokat former Sales Director of AEG sits on the Charlton Athletic Community Trust with Varney)?
Lots of possibilities, though lots of rubbish as well.
I spoke to a major client of Bill Curbishley's last week (who also happens to be on the Board of a Premiership Club) and mentioned their were rumours of him investing in Charlton. He said he was trying to get him involved with his Club, but Bill wasn't that interested in football.
Throwing in my twoppence worth - David Miles, has just been made CEO of The Mears Group (despite being in construction they have again posted record pre tax profits)- and according to their last accounts was holding a substantial amount in their shares. He's also a West Stand Season Ticket holder.
[cite]Posted By: BigRedEvil[/cite]Beckham is rumoured to be wanting to buy a club, maybe it's us
I also heard this a while ago, but just assumed it was nonsense as it wasn't exactly a 'reilable' source, it was 'a mate of a mate told me....' kinda thing. My info went something like he wants to buy a league 1 london club, I know it sounds very far fetched and unbelieveable, but who knows Although, I really doubt this is true myself tbh.

Just shows some of the nonsense flying around. I have sat in Bill's office and I have to tell you that pride of place is given not to a picture of his clients (The Who,Robert Plant etc) but to a framed photo of him with his brother and Alex Ferguson.
But I love all these ''I spoke to someone who spoke to someone who knows...'' stories!

This was first hand - a multi millionaire, in the Sunday Times top 100 richest, who is football mad and won't put too much of his own money into the Club he loves.
His stance was that Bill was of a similar view and wasn't mad enough to invest in a football club.
Sorry if I am being too nervous, but can we remove that Zabeel e-mail address, please?
I can just imagine our luck - another deal cancelled due to being inundated by e-mails from frustrated Charlton fans who happen to have hit upon this thread and decided to enlighten them with their own particular brand of wisdom...
I know it probably isn't even them involved, but my paranoia levels get very high when we are at the 'deal soon to be finalised' stage given our past history!

Used to be a director a while ago. Don't think he has the sort of money we are talking about though.

Who knows they could be going above Wisey and Jiminez and dealing direct with Varney

They have just acquired McQuoid from Bournemouth though for a fee of ca. £500k.
