Some people on here appear to think that there will be loads of money in January, others feel that this is a front for some wiseguys. It's most likely to be neither but with Varney involved it probably does mean that there is a good chance of some stability for a couple of years. Murray had clearly reached of his line but it looks as though he has handed the club over to someone who he believes will try and do good for the club. I, for one, am very grateful to Murray for that and for the great years between going back to the Valley and relegation in 2007.
Well it's great news for Murray! Eat your heart out Tangoman, who couldn't sell palarse despite years of trying! But will we still be laughing in a few years time? I do trust Reg though.
The fact that Mr Varney is involved with this means that I won't do any worrying at all. If the 'baton' does pass from RM to him, then we can consider ourselves very lucky to have had people running the club who are Charlton through and through.
So, sod the pessimism - I am going to get excited about this. It is nearly Christmas, after all!
[cite]Posted By: Danny Addick[/cite]I was thinking the same thing about seemed and racon's contract.
Really hope theyvebgot money.
BBC report says sainsbury was rejected in November, surely he had a lot of money so this consortium must have some funds to be bake to comp tee with sainsbury? Or was he simply not the right person for the club...
Sainsbury does have money but he was not looking to use it, it was also believed that he was looking to use our assets to buy the club.
As PV is fronting it all and that RM has approved it I very much doubt if it is a group that would merely keep things chugging along as they are at present, I also agree that it is probably not a megabucks deal either. In reality any League One club no matter how well funded will never spend ridiculous sums in order to gain promotion. Looking at QPR in the Championship they supposedly have megabucks but they have not spent ridiculously just because of it, I suspect that they will spend bigger when/if they get to the promised land (tm). In our case whomever takes over I would expect them to give Phil Parkinson a little respect for the efforts he has put in and give him some time to continue what he is doing, I think that he deserves that much and in all honesty the squad we have only needs the odd tweak here and there and a few astute and conservative aquisitions are all that are presently needed.
After having my heart broken having got so excited by so much talk of takeovers (both real and rumoured over the last three and a half years) I refuse to get particularly excited by the talk of this one, I'm not down on it but I won't build my hopes up either. No matter what happens off the pitch Charlton Athletic FC must get out of this division sooner rather than later whether this takeover happens or not.
Just caught up with this. My feelings are an overwhelming sense of relief that PV is involved and sincerely hope that RM continues to be involved in some capacity in the future. Interesting time ahead boys and girls!
been thinking since announced, did they chose today specifically so that the investers coulds remain secret until dealings are complete to avoid intrusion,
if so we could be talking some serious players here with big bucks who dont want their news splashed over media pages

Interesting suggestion.
A funny day to pick, as you say. Could be good or bad news that. News dumping is usually bad news
We've always done things quietly and normally waited for things to be done before any os report.
Even Zabeel they only reported we were in due diligence which is what we have to do.
Also there was a few people on here saying a takeover was close last week after the Luton game. As we're a league one club not many reporters find us that news worthy to go digging, unless your dan roan...
Ladies and Gentlemen, would you please join me in a toast to a great new Double Act.........Rich and Reg. I now look forward to seeing them Top Of The Bill.

My understanding is that without a buyer we were heading for administration in the summer. I'm not expecting much more than that the club is saved for a year from that, can keep the team intact for more than a season for once and maybe capitalize on that if we can make it to the CCC, or stand another chance if we do not. My thoughts go to Plymouth fans right now. There but for the grace of whatever...
Oh and we don't need Curbs in now (wuth the greatest respect to him), we need Parky to carry on doing whatever he's been doing to make the team what it is this season after 3 years of freefall.
[cite]Posted By: Rudders22[/cite]Can anyone post the peter varney statement pls I can't get into it? thankx
PETER Varney has exclusively revealed to the South London Press that the investor group who have had their takeover bid for Charlton accepted have already cleared a number of major hurdles. The Addicks released a statement earlier today confirming that a deal could be completed as early as December 24.
And Varney, who is representing the group, issued the following statement to us:
“The offer that has been agreed is a legally binding one.
"This means that unless issues come to light of which the investors have not been made aware there should be new owners of the club this side of Christmas.
"The investors have already satisfied the club on its proof of funds process and its fit and proper person test but the Football League and the club’s bankers also have stringent requirements that will need to be satisfied.
"A team of lawyers and accountants have beavering away at The Valley since November 27.
"I think it is well documented that Richard Murray has been seeking new investment for some time and Richard deserves the respect of every Charlton supporter for continuing to underwrite the club whilst this much needed investment was found.
"Our focus for the next few weeks is completing the legal and financial processes and when the time is right all the questions that supporters will understandably have will be answered”.
Well... for me , I am quietly optimistic... Who ever it is taking us over would not be doing it so that their money can collapse into a black hole within 12 months and leave them skint and the club screwed...
So I think we have got at least 2 yrs security from this and if we make the promised land of the championship next season we could well be on the brink of sustainability and a new age here at Charlton..
Recent performances have been strong in the league with the emergance of Johnnie Jackson as a fantastic player for this league as well as a much more balanced and dangerous side moving forward ... lets now hope we can maintain the stability and continue this great run with a win at Luton and a smash and grab at Tottenham (Dreams!) ...
Overal with a couple a couple of players of genuine quality brought in we could be a real force in this league, and with financail stability supposedly secured it will also be easier to attract players, I aslo think if we can get into the third round of the cup and have a decent showing it might just attract some of the fans that have naffed it to come back to the valley for the second half of the season...
If these guys are mega rich I will be over the moon, personally I think they might be a bit rich in the 10 million braket(complete guess) if they are in the 100 Mill bracket then it is happy days moving forward, if they are in the 5 Billion brakcet then stadium redevelopment , Premiership stability and european football is back on... (dreams again!)
Overall the roller coaster that is supporting charlotn continues..
Who in their right mind would "invest" in football
What have they to gain , I just don't understand why anyone would do it, unless they were super duper rich like abramovich and the manc city fella who are on an ego trip with money to burn
Or a jack walker / steve gibson style fella who had money to burn and was unconditionally in love with a club
How many people who have recently invested in football have made money?
The Sky boom may have a made a few chairman rich(the ones lucky enough to sell earlier on) but it seems to have encouraged poor house keeping and ridiculously badly run clubs , ourselves being a prime example of a mismanaged club
So who are the new owners , a group not an indiviidual by the sounds of it and what are they in this for ??? Why would they risk x amount of money without hoping to get a good return , where is that return gonna come from
if that return doesn't appear (with promotion bound to be a must for any rewards) how long will they burn their money supporting our slow motion car crash or is everything leveraged up against selling off the assets if it all goes properly tits up
Interesting but still scary times ...... I can't see the logic in buying a football club, fingers crossed we've got a group of steve gibson style punters not the risdale/ no money/ fly by night/ hit and run merchants
Comments
In our current straightened circs, I suspect not much more than:
a) having ten shillings more in the bank than Richard Murray
b) the ability to fill in the FA forms properly
c) no known convictions for molesting small children
Christ ! Whoever they are RM and PV are happy to do business with them. Why so negative already ?
Yeah. Maybe. sorry if I missed a light hearted comment. So unlike me ;0)
BBC journalist who announced the take over bid a month or so ago, that didn't happen, ie Sebastian Sainsbury's offer.
So, sod the pessimism - I am going to get excited about this. It is nearly Christmas, after all!

A company comprising Danish fans who love English football will take a controlling interest in Croydon Athletic on 1 January.
There are also plans for the club to bring in Danish Championship players in January.
Il drink to that Granpa :)
