  • For Frimpong an Arsenal team,Evina never made the first 11 at the Emirates which is why I put in Gatting at left back.

Personally I think it's slightly disappointing when compared to the Chelsea/Spurs and West Ham sides although the recent trio of Jenkinson,Frimpong and Song make it look a bit stronger.

    Tony Burns , Carl Jenkinson ,Steve Gatting ,Emmanuel Frimpong,Chris Whyte,Tommy Caton,Jerome Thomas,Francis Jeffers,Cliff Holton,Alex Song,Neil Heaney.
  • A few more teams

Of the relegated teams Wigan lacks a Goalie,I have done Reading above. Here is QPR:

    QPR

Nicky Johns , Luke Young ,Gary Borrowdale ,Gavin Peacock , Alan MacDonald ,Tony Hazell ,Paul Walsh ,Mike Flanagan ,Stuart Leary ,Hogan Ephraim ,Lee Cook .

In League One I have done Bournemouth above and cannot do Doncaster. Here's Yeovil :

    Ben Roberts ,Kelly Youga,Phil Ferns,Alan Pardew,Dean Chandler ,Jimmy Giles,Cyril Davies,Kim Grant,Jonathan Obika,Paul Gilchrist,Jordan Cook

    Our pre season opponents

I posted my Spurs team earlier.I ignored both Jermaine Defoe and Mike Flanagan because they did not play for both first teams.

I picked Paul Konchesky and Luke Young at full back because they were Full England internationals whereas Don Mcalister and Terry Naylor were not.Another candidate Mark Bowen played his best football at Norwich and only started at Spurs as a youth and finished with us as a veteran.

In central defence Paul Miller and Chris Perry served both clubs well in the top flight whereas players like Simon Webster barely played for Spurs and have only played for us in the second tier. I don't think many Addicks would want to consider Gary Doherty or Kevin Scott.

However,in midfield I decided to play Jacko rather than Paul Walsh because Walshie was more of a striker and I felt Jacko deserved a place in the team due to his legendary exploits over the last two seasons.

Up top Garth Crooks was an excellent forward (not an annoying BBC commentator) for older fans and I could not exclude Darren Bent.

Maybe Dorian Dervite and Jonathan Obika can change my mind in the next few seasons if they push on and help us surge to the Prem.

    My team is:

    David Button,Luke Young,Paul Konchesky,Scott Parker,Paul Miller,Chris Perry,Danny Murphy,Garth Crooks,Darren Bent,Johnnie Jackson,Andy Reid.

Subs from Peter Guthrie (obscure Goalie who Lennie brought in on loan as cover for Bolder and played for neither first team),Don Mcalister,Terry Naylor,Mark Bowen,Dorian Dervite,Simon Webster,Gary Doherty,Kevin Scott,Alan Pardew(played in the Inter toto Cup for Tottenham),Mark Gower,Denis Bond,Dean Parrett,Paul Walsh,Jonathan Obika,Chris Jones,Martin Robinson.
  • The West Ham team would beat the Spurs team. Not often you can say that!
  • Scott Carson signing for Wigan completes another team.

    Wigan

    Scott Carson,Matt Jackson,Mark Bowen,Brendon O'Connell,Stuart Balmer,John Pender,Neil Redfearn ,Marcus Bent,Svet Todorov, Kevin Nicholls,Scott Sinclair.

He would also feature in a Villa line up.

    Aston Villa

    Scott Carson,Luke Young,Carl Tiler,Alan Curbishley,Paul Elliott,Leighton Phillips,Mark Kinsella,Darren Bent,Dai Astley,Sailor Brown,Paul Mortimer.

Keeping it topical Jonjo to Swansea means I no longer need to pick Jimmy Loveridge in my Swansea team.

    Noel Dwyer,Rueben Agboola,Fede Bessone,Jonjo Shelvey,Paul Miller,Leighton Phillips,Alan Davies ,Mark Gower,John Hendry,Scott Sinclair,John Salako.
  • good Villa side that.

Thought Darren didn't play for Villa ?
    ;-)

  • Sordell's debut completes my Bolton 11 ,although it would have to be a defensive 4 5 1 with Don McAlister in midfield. This would also be the only Charlton 11 which would include Mikel Alonso after his JPT appearance.

    Mike Salmon ,Danny Butterfield,Anthony Barness, Don McAlister,Mark Fish,Andy Todd,Neil Redfearn,Mikel Alonso,Marvin Sordell,Claus Jensen,John Salako

Some more teams with two of our next opponents in mind :

Blackpool Sasa Illic,Matt Jackson,Steve Harrison,Jonjo Shelvey Garry Rowett,Miguel Llera,Luke Varney Jason Euell,Ricardo Fuller, Hameur Bouazza ,Kyle Reid

The signing of Cameron Stewart means we can scrape together a 3 5 2 Blackburn line up without needing either Marcus Bent or Barry Endean.

    Mike Salmon,Christian Dailly,Andy Todd,Jay Mceverley,Cameron Stewart,Danny Murphy,Eamon Rogers,Matt Holmes,Keith Gillespie ,Jay Bothroyd,Francis Jeffers.

Keeping it current Ben Alnwick will complete a Norwich 11 if takes the field for the Addicks,Tony Warner never got past the subs bench.

    Ben Alnwick,Danny Mills,Mark Bowen,Scott Parker,Gary Doherty,Kevin Scott,Darel Russell,Andy Hughes,Leon Mckenzie,Graham Stuart,Jonathan Johanssen.

Old timers like me might argue that Mike Kenning or Gordon Bolland would be preferable to Russell - especially if they were there that day he lost it in Huddersfield
  • Fair point redlanered I try to include older players but am not always as aware of them so miss some good choices.

One of the teams that is surprisingly good is Southend particularly as Eddie Firmani leads the imaginary front line and SCP is a fixture at the back.

It must be a good side because the legends that are Nicky Bailey ,Simon Francis and Alan Mccormack do not get in it.

  • York City XI

Bartram, Sailor Brown, T Young, Graham Murty, Eamon Dunphy, George Hope, Chris Iwelumo, F H Scott ('40s), Mike Walker, Dean Kiely and Nick Pope

The only player I could add into the mix for York would have been Lee Cook.

Some improved London joint teams plus seven subs where I can in order of which teams are strongest.Brentford and Arsenal have smaller benches.Following Tuesday's debut I have put Alnwick in the Spurs team above Button on the basis he did play more than 15 minutes in goal for Spurs:

I am really a couple of players short of Liverpool but in the spirit of SheffieldRed's post I will move Bolder who has only ever played for a Liverpool first team in Masters football to centre back where he now plays for CAFC Vets and include our FA Cup winning skipper Don Welsh who played for the Scousers as a guest in the War and later managed them.Hugh Mcauley also was once an unused sub for them so he can make the bench.

    Scott Carson,Paul Konchesky,Frank Lock,Jonjo Shelvey,Bob Bolder,Djimi Traore,Danny Murphy, Nathan Eccleston,Paul Walsh, Don Welsh, John Barnes.Sub Hugh Mcauley

  • Everton XI

Myhre, Youds, J Davies (40's), M Jackson, Hughes, Stuart, Blomqvist, Jeffers, T Lawton, Bent, J Gauld

  • Blomqvist can go into the Scandinavian team as well.
  • Thanks SheffieldRed similar to Liverpool I thought I was a couple short to properly do Everton.

Can you improve on some of my earlier teams using historical players?

Because Stephen Hughes never came on the pitch for the Addicks but did make it to the bench as an unused sub a few times for us he can be a sub .Similarly Jim McDonagh can keep him company as the Goalie sub as can Richard Gough was also once registered as an Addick and played for our reserve and youth team :

    Thomas Myhre,Matt Jackson,Garry Rowett,Eddie Youds,Carl Tiler,Graham Stuart,Jimmy Gauld ,Jesper Blomqvist,Marcus Bent Ron Saunders,Francis Jeffers Subs : Richard Gough ,Stephen Hughes,Jim McDonagh.

would be a stronger line up

From a quick look Jeffers could get in the Wednesday squad.

Take it you don't want war signings the teams, as otherwise Lawton would surely make the Everton team.

  • Could we come up with a CAFC team who have represented one of the four home countries ENG-WAL-SCO-NIR while at Charlton
  • edited December 2013

Home international team. John Hewie can go between the sticks. He did play three full games for us in goal.David Campbell is picked so all four home nations are represented otherwise I would have Scott Parker.

    John Hewie,Luke Young,Chris Powell,Mike Bailey,Mark Aizlewood,Leighton Phillips,John Robinson,Simon Church,Andy Jones,David Campbell,Paul Konchesky

Struggle a bit on the goalkeeper front. Carson was a B international for us and Bartram was the greatest English goalkeeper never to be capped. Hewie is a good call albeit I don't think he played in goal for Scotland.

I think I would have picked a more Anglocentric team than Richard.

    Southampton XI

Tiger Hill*, Murty, Dailly, El Khalej, Butterfield, Madden, Stephens, N'Guessan, Eull, Fuller, G Watson

    * played for Southampton but only managed us, and also out of position

  • edited December 2013
    Good try at Southampton.

On the basis that there is no Goalie who played for both first teams ( I often bend the rules with Keepers) I would have Anti Niemi who was on loan briefly when Kiely was injured in our championship winning promotion season. Chris Perry for El Khalej and Danny Seaborne could replace Butterfield at left back on the basis that he was left footed .1976 Cup Final Saint Paul Gilchrist and our forgotten play off hero Neil Heaney could also feature.

I know Hewie did not play in goal for Scotland but he did in a few full games for us.

Oakster asked for a team that was capped whilst a Charlton player.Carson wouldn't qualify anyway by that definition because he was only on loan as a Liverpool player.

The nearest specialist Keeper I could come up with would be ex Chelsea and Wales stopper John Phillips who played 2 games for us in 81/82 conceding 6 goals in the process and was capped 4 times by the land of my fathers whilst at the Bridge.Of course if you open up qualification to the Republic we could pick Deano.

Let's try again with Pompey I posted it without much research in pre season so am not surprised I missed a few.

I will leave out Defoe as he never played in our first team and include Amdy Faye because I understand he is well regarded at Fratton Park and because this is a joint team I need to take account of that.

    Dean Kiely,Christian Dailly,Herman Hredarsson,Alexi Smertin,Sam Sodje,Paul Went,Paul Walsh,Ricardo Fuller,Svet Todorov,Amdy Faye, Jerome Thomas Subs : Sasa Ilic,Martin Cranie,Yassin Mouatikill,Greg Halford,Darrel Russell,Ray Crawford,Ron Saunders

  • Derby is a club where we lack a keeper for our 11,but apart from that it is a good side.To make up the team I will stick Andy Todd in goal :

    Andy Todd,Danny Mills,Chris Powell,Christian Dailly,Simon Webster,Garry Rowett,Robert Lee,Derek Hales,Deon Burton,Bryan Hughes,Johnnie Jackson.
  • Other options:
Astley, Varney, Lisbie, Svensson up front
    Revell on the wing

Think I would drop Burton from your line up and replace with Astley.

Agree with that, I remembered to include Dai for the Villa team to partner Darren Bent up front. Charlie Revell can replace Bryan Hughes and we can move Jacko inside.

Any chance that big Sam played for them in the war to give me a Keeper ? I couldn't find any obscure connection between the sticks.

  • Not to my knowledge.

Certainly played for York. And I think he turned out for Liverpool.

  • Rangers XI

Myhre, Gough, Bougherra, Dailly, Niemi*,N'Guessan, Amdy Faye , Lee Martin, Kerkar, Jonatan Johansson, Jeffers
