I don't usually slag Parky off, but its hardly a secret that Exeter play 3-5-2. Exeter always had a spare man in midfield which meant that our full backs were left trying to mark 2 players. They just pinged the ball around until they either got it out wide for a cross, or got Sercombe or Harley into enough space to have a shot.
First time I've seen us play this season. My assessment was:
Elliot - Distribution is poor, both his decision making and execution - wincing a bit at the end of the first half not sure he's fully fit. (Worner looks v. short for a keeper!) Francis - Hmmm - I thought he was at least supposed to be good going forward. Too many crosses hit the first man today. Defensively he's easily turned and not the fastest to recover Doc - looked good llera - great when the ball is in the air, heart in your mouth if its on the ground. Still hitting long diagonal balls to Lloyd Sam Fry - started nervously, got better as the game went on but tired towards the end, sily booking Martin - flash player, but worrying lack of end product McCormack never seams to pass the ball forward, or turn with it. Pased it back to the halfway line when he was on the edge of the box today Semedo - breaks up play well, but misplaced quite a few passes, particularly towards the end. Reid - didn't get the ball much today and they doubled up him when he did Abbot - really disappointed with him, didn't exactly work his socks off Benson - Worked hard, but if his strength is creating space for himself in the box it would help if someone actually gave him it whilst he was in there.
Hope Akpo is OK, they were stretchering him of into an Ambulance as we left. Didn't look good.
[cite]Posted By: onestevieg[/cite]Good to see we are keeping up with the ritual of getting in strikers who can't score. Is the club cursed or something??? Have we had our fair share in Hales, Hunt and Clive? Know it is only five games in but starting to worry about lack of quality in midfield, chances created and some players treating the ball like the proverbial hot potato.
This is what I mean by poor management. Parkinson should have played 352. It was in fact the perfect opportunity to try it out or to play 451 and pack the midfield.
It is games like this that really evidence Parkinson's lack of strategic and tactical flexibility.
Get some perspective FFS. We have played 5, yes that's right 5 league games and already we have written off our season.
This is a new team that is finding its feet. Get to November/December and it still aint happening then fine, bitch and whine about how shite Abbott is and how Francis is cack and how our CBs are too slow and that Fry and Martin shouldnt play because they are on loan. Until then, shows some f**cking patience and see if this team, which I believe is potentially better than last year, can get it right.
Posted By: Valley_floyd_red Our mid field is utterly devoid of a holding player.
Amazing! We HELD them for ninety minutes and conceded a suspect penalty. It's creativity in the centre of the side we lack
I would disagree with you slightly there, I don't think we held them at all, I just don't think they were very good. It occured to of on a number of occasions that it was a good job they were shit. Eliot was beaten on a number of occasions today and the fact that exeter didn't score is no positive reflection on anything Charlton did, they are just not a very good side.
I definitely agree that we lack creativity but if we, as I wrote in my earlier post, did the simple things well enough I'm sure that all of a sudden players would find themselves in a half a yard of space. some of the ball control today was just shocking.
[cite]Posted By: Clem_Snide[/cite]Get some perspective FFS. We have played 5, yes that's right 5 league games and already we have written off our season.
I agree with you Clem. However i must say Parky dropped a big ricket not so much today but on Tuesday. Playing Dailly in that useless game was an amazingly stupid choice, and look what's happened. Kept that quiet didn't they, and no wonder. Tuesday was an ideal time to try 3-5-2, Fry at centre back etc. And yes I know that there is a stupid rule about playing a min 6 first teamers, but for heaven's sake, playing Dailly in that....black mark, Parky.
Wasn't there so, as usual under those circs.I'm hesitant to comment. I'm certainly not going to pass judgement on our tactics or formation from an armchair, and don't quite understand those who feel they can.
BUT... I did see us on Tuesday night and I'm not surprised we were apparently poor today. I couldn't comprehend how some on here drew so many positives from Tuesday night and started enthusing about how many chances we made (even if only one was put away). We didn't make loads of chances. Those that came our way were largely because D&R were one of the most abysmal teams I've ever seen at the Valley (and yes, that includes us at our worst!!!)
I suspect both Abbott and Benson are lumps who get a decent amount of goals in the lower divisions because defenders at the level we are at will always make mistakes - although, of course, it would help if we got more crosses in to them.
That said I would guess a high proportion of our goals this season need to come from Wagstaff, Martin, Reid etc. and I was surprised that Waggy didn't start.
Hope Akpo is OK. I don't think he's much better than Abbott and Benson, to be honest. But he took a bad knock on Tues night as well and he's as wholehearted as they come , so good luck to him...
Interesting comment that only the 200 to 300 Charlton fans who went to Exeter are allowed to comment on the performance.
From the set up of the team and the commentary and Iamnotathletic comments that the formation, strategy and player selection was wrong today.
That is down to Parkinson who got it wrong, again. It is the points that we drop in games like these ( and the points we drop in similar games last season) that undermines promotion.
Not saying that the season is doomed, there is a winning team and formation with the players we have got but I don't have much faith in Parkinson's ability to consistantly pick that out. Alan Curbishley he is not.
I did say in the week I wanted Fry at CB instead of Dailly , the Doc and Llera is not a good combo. They are too similar .Before the Goal it sounded like Exeter were causing our Central Defence lots of problems.
How fit is Fortune ? If he still has the same pace as he had a couple of years ago then he might be the answer . If he has lost his pace then Fry could be the long term answer . I'd like to see Jacko tried in Midfield as I think that he is possibly the creative force we need there .
It sounds like we need a Keeper to cover Robbie over the next couple of months while he can get fit. I don't want to sound negative but Worner can't be the answer yet .
On a positive note the Bench had some real options today
I had a feeling we were going to struggle as soon as I heard that Exeter were playing 3-5-2.
I just don't think Parky has the know-how to deal with any opposition formation other than 4-4-2 and even then he struggles to cope when opposition managers make subs and alter things around - hence the number of points dropped in the relegation season. Would be happy to be proved wrong but I can't see us doing a lot with him in charge.
[cite]Posted By: vff[/cite]That is down to Parkinson who got it wrong, again. It is the points that we drop in games like these ( and the points we drop in similar games last season) that undermines promotion.
We could have tried 3-5-2 and lost, who knows. If we did, you'd be saying how can the team gel if we keep changing formation.
Perhaps we should have played 4-5-1 or 3-5-2, but no one can say it's a fact that if we did we'd have got a result.
Looking at it the other way, 4-5-1 could have left the striker isolated. Playing 3-5-2 could have caught out Reid or Wagstaff defensively. Can't really say either way it was the formation that was the problem.
Wasn't long ago people were saying the likes of Reid, Martin, Jackson, Semedo etc could play in the Championship. We need the players to step up and perform better than they have done.
Only going by what i have heard, but if you don't create chances for the strikers how are they going to score. We are not creative enough. I'm not too worried about our holding play as going into extra time with players going off injured but losing out to a last minute penalty although disappointing does not say out defensive play is shocking. What is shocking is that we should be scoring goals with the players we have. I do think we have forwards who will score us goals, but they have to be given the ball in positions where they are likely to score.
Parky better find a formular soon. I think he has the players, but he needs to be able to change his tactics affectively. Dropping players who play well i.e. Wagstaff, Solly and Racon is not going to help things. Make players earn their place. Solly has earned his place and Wagstaff has proved he can get forward, score and track back. Racon scored on Tuesday, ok that shouldn't guarantee him a position but when Parky turns round as says scoring that goal will give him confidence...... what the hell will dropping him do...... Moron.
personally i think the team lacks balance playing with 2 big centre forwards up front doesnt work in my eyes what tends to happen is players start knocking long balls which basically bypasses our midfield ,we tend to play better football when we play through our midfield ,id also like to see racon and semedo in the middle ok racon is a bit of a show pony at times but do we really need mccormack and semedo players that i feel are very similar ,for now though i feel we might need to be patient something that im not very good at , parky needs to find a certain way of playing because this is his team and if things dont change quickly i reckon he could be in for a rough ride ,i also reckon he should play martin alongside 1 of the big men upfront with waggy and reid either side,it also gives him the option of throwing on a big forward towards the end if needed in both cases chasing a goal or defending a lead.
Just read back my comments and I may have been a bit harsh, highlighting the negatives, there were some positives McCormack dug Llera out of a hole with an excellent last ditch tackle in the first half for instance and we coped better with Exeters formation in the second half. Fact of the matter is that overall we didn't play well - bad day at the office or a sign of a poor season for us only time will tell. Too say that people are writing the season off is a bit much though.
Just to add a sense of perspective, we're not the only team that have had a bad day at the office at Exeter. They lost only 4 games at home last season and were unbeaten at home to the top 6, beating Leeds and Huddersfield and drawing with the rest.
As I said on the pre match thread Exeter are a team on the up and I think they've a chance of finishing in the top half if they can score some goals.
Parky did get something right, Ex Barnet Frontman John O'Flynn played up front for Exeter today. Quite a few on here were saying we should have gone in for him, but he was sh!ite!

Most of the long balls today were coming from the keeper, we created our best chance of the first half when Elliot played it out to Fry who played in Reid down the left to get a cross in. Didn't stop Elliot knocking it long for most of the second half though!

The bbc radio commentator, was emphatic that it was not a penalty, and then began to change his mind, and started to blame the 'pillar' that may have effected his judgement.....
The sky commentator did not even comment on the fact that it could have been a poor decision, and blamed Liera......
So I am no wiser! at least from the radio coverage.
I cannot help thinking that Racon, should have played, and Waggy, and was surprissed that no change was made at half time!.
You have to assume that the manager knows his players and team, but I thought this was a match we should win, or should be able to win.
Dissapointed, from the commentatory, and a poor decision of the ref if you beleive the original comments.
Got the feeling we had to kick on today, but seemed to go backwards today, hope I am proved wrong......
Didn't have the chance to listen to today's game. By the sound of it we haven't created enough again. This has to change if we want to get out of this league this season, playing with a bit of freedom won't harm our attacking players it will benefit them.
We also have 3 centre forwards of similar nature which lacks options.
Also hoped Racon would start today especially after his goal and the Isle comments about him.

Can't understand his obsession with large geriatrics as forwards. If they score, they are dropped anyway.
I am over 30, over 6ft tall, quite slow and rarely score.....should I give him my number?
