  • Never liked Martin, did one great bit of skill then got tackled.
Only scored 3 goals (2 of them in the same game), i dont mind that he's going back.
  • I'm with Jazzy, can't decide if I'm happy or not about this at the moment - depends who he's replaced with
  • All well and good that he was not the best for us every game, but the fact remains we need a replacement and leaves CP with his work cut out to get in a player or two of a higher calibre.

Still, im sure he'll do it. Still cant believe hes boss. Happy Days!
  • Didn't do enough for me, would rather free up the budget as i can imagine he was a decent wage earner.
  • Not too bothered as long as it opens up a slot to bring someone else in. Always looked like he was going to do something just never actually did. I am sure he will make it somewhere, he certainly has the talent but it is unlikely to be this season and we can't really afford to wait for him (especially as he is only here on loan anyway).
  • It smacks of new manager not just us but ipswich.

powelly has his targets if he knows of a player he wants in that position then why pay ipswich's wages. I liked the boy thought he had a bit about him in a league where you get more time he will do well wasn't up to the physical side of 3rd tier football

If Powell has no plans for him no harm done releases cash and squad place

No fence sitting here..No end product and not always on the same wavelength as the team.
Unable to stay onside when looking down the line. cheers and goodbye
  • Shame he has been mostly a let down, he should have been the spark that saw us at the very top of the table. I do worry that his will be a talent never utilised
  • Good luck to him back at Ipswich

Parky said we'd got a very good deal on the wages but it does free up a loan place.

Appears we asked to play him at Spurs but Ipswich said no as they felt they had a chance of going through against Chelsea. Oops.

  • For me Martin had one of the best attitudes I've seen of any loan player anywhere, always acted as though he was a Charlton player busted a gut with his running and workrate, whenever a teammate scored a goal he looked genuinely happy for them and the club, and the fact that he argued with refs over bad decisions they gave against his teammates showed to me that he is very committed to Charlton. Whilst I will say he was inconsistent he was clearly good enough for us and on his day is by far too good for this division, I hope we can get him back on loan and I think that he will be a loss to the side if we don't.
  • I feel Martin's work rate was excellent. He just lacked that last bit of control in the final 3rd. I really had high hopes of him hitting his stride with us this season as he looked like he could potentially create something from nothing. Unfortunately didn't quite get there.

I think he will be an awesome championship player someday. And could be a good Prem player eventually, if he can learn to think a little and not try too many flash tricks.

Sad to see him go in a way. Just hope we can get replacements in.
  • im happy hes gone. he would run 1 million miles an hour on the pitch and in his head. This guy has loads of personal skill but no team awareness... i would prefer jackson, reid, or wagstaff over martin on the wings

    My sentiments too.

Just a shame he didn't have the vision and decision-making tuned into the right station.

Couldn't really fault him for much else.
  • Can't fault his attitude at all. Unfortunately his huffing and puffing led to very little.

However any player that gives his all gets my blessing and I wish him every success in the future except when playing against us!
  • I would not mind seeing the OPTA stats for Martin, I think they might surprise a few people as to how many goals he actually created for us.

He had that touch of class in the final third that won't be easy to replace.
  • Theres no doubt he's talented but became a lazy player in the end, seemed to drift in/out games.

Would have liked to have kept him as extra cover but now hes gone free's up some wages for another player, hopefully a decent defender or somebody who
    knows how to finish.

Possibly his 9th Club will find the key to him!
  • Glad he's gone. Another player we've signed in recent years with massive potential who has been a huge disappointment. We ain't gonna get out of this league with lee martin in the team. The player will make an impact somewhere in his career but like so many before him, it ain't gonna be here.
  • I don't think we'll miss him all that much if Chris 'The Messiah' Powell manages to accomplish what we dream of, and get the whole team playing with commitment and passion- oh, and tactical awareness too. We shall see what happens nexyt re: a replacement before I make my mind up though.

  • Terrific ability, great tricks but often unlucky. Good work rate but can't pick a pass. You go up playing as a team, like the spanners did last year, not playing as individuals like Martin often did. Gave the ball away too much for me but I enjoyed the excitement of seeing him on the run. Anything could happen but at the end of the day a poor return in goals or assists.

    This and this...............loads
  • Was pleased when we signed him. Never fault his work rate - although he often vanished for huge chunks of games. Bit of a show pony. Think we can do better. Sure Jewell tried to sign him for Wigan so this was kind of inevitable.
  • In summary he worked hard, but was like the kid in junior school. You know the one that would try and dribble around the whole team and would never pass it.
Once in a while it comes off and looks superb, but mostly it's a frustrating let down.

I imagine he'll be on about 6-8k a week, and considering our average wage is now 4k (I think), it's still a good deal even if we only had to pay half of it (which is still a lot for our budget, and can be spent on a different option).

Personally disappointed he's gone as always felt he had the possibility of greatness.

Just a thought; hasn't Eccleston played on the wing before?

Martin was rumoured to be on £11-12k at Ipswich, and back in August Murray said our average was £2k.

Here you go. Football League stats.

Reid leads the way with 7 assists in all comps, Wagstaff has the most in the league with 5.

Martin has 4 but I'm sure they gave his assist away to Orient to Abbott and they never corrected it.

So going by the stats 4 or 5 assists isn't bad, on watching him he was inconsistent and never found his best position.

Cheers Scoham, I knew he had made a few goals for us, I think his flick to Waggy for the 2nd goal at Brisbane Road was a touch of real class.

We will miss him badly, I don't think we will get someone else of his quality all that easily.
  • Great talent but completely unable to grasp what to do with it.
  • Great work rate - to be fair looking at his career his never really had any substantial run of games let alone a set position got a feeling consistency will come with a set position and run of games!
  • Not to fazed tbh, has ability no doubt about it but he's an in and out player really. We need in players right about now.
