  • Watched Allied last night, the fairly new Brad Pitt film. Very well made. Decent film to watch with your missus and it's ultimately a love story with a bit of suspense thrown in. I enjoyed it.

I also watched it last night, not really a Brad Pitt fan but thought it was a good film, enjoyed Cotillard's performance.
Apparently it's based an a true story the director was told, there is no evidence of the characters or the story so how much is true will never know but a good story none the less.
  • In the space of 4 days we've managed to see 3 truly exceptional films in the cinema, which is a rarity. All probably 9/10 films

They were: the aforementioned Manchester By The Sea, a beautifully-compiled documentary memoir by a cameraperson called, um, Cameraperson, and Toni Erdmann, a 3-hour German comedy (CL scarpers at this point) that's also hugely rich with emotion, drama and false teeth - the best of the lot. Might even be a 9.5/10, that one.

  • Just watched Lion. Absolutely brilliant .

Hopefully seeing Toni Erdmann tonight - great reviews for this.

  • Thought Hell or High Water was good watch but a tad overrated. 98% on rotten tomatoes. Recent ones I've seen: Manchester by the Sea, Allied, Deepwater Horizon were all better in my opinion.

I agree. Toni Erdmann is by far the best film I've seen in the last 12 months and will hopefully win the Foreign Language Film BAFTA and Oscar awards. Although it's 2 hours and 42 minutes, it really didn't feel like that.

Hell or High Water is a really understated film with interesting subtext and subtle performances. Seems to me that it works better if you go in with no expectations and you get pleasantly surprised instead. That said, Allied is a hilariously stupid film, and Deepwater Horizon?! With John Malkovich chomping on the scenery?? Each to their own I suppose.
  • Made the mistake of watching the new ghostbusters last night.

Now I actually like the actors, kirsten wiig has great comedy timing and has been good in everything I've seen her in. Melissa Mccarthy I also find funny and she was excellent in spy. They could not salvage this wet squirty bowel movement of a film. I was also incredibly annoyed with the cameos for some reason

Im annoyed I watched it, especially because we could have watched deep water horizon or hateful 8 instead

Maybe better relative to the expectations is more apt Jimmy. The wife and I both enjoyed it and I appreciate the subtle performance you mention but I had just expected a bit more. Maybe comparing it with Manchester by the Sea is more relevant and we preferred that.
  • Keep meaning to watch Manchester but aware of how emotional it is, not been in the right frame of mind for that!

Would like to see all the Oscar nominations before the awards, at the moment Lion is probably my favourite of the lot (although I will be rooting for Hell or High Water). It'll be a shame of La La Land clears the board, it'll do so just because it's a film for and about Hollywood (like The Artist).

I got 15 minutes into Fences before deciding I needed to punch Denzel, so had to turn it off.

Think you're doing the film a bit of a disservice there.Unlike 'The Artist', it's a very clever film without ever appearing to be self-consciously so. The balance between realism and fantasy is perfectly balanced, Gosling and Stone are charming without being affected. And it's genuinely funny.
Oddly, I was underwhelmed by the music which you would think paramount for a musical, but it didn't matter. This is far more than a 'Musical'.
I could go on, but the rugby'starting.

  • Sorry, I didn't mean to criticise the movie - it's a wonderful piece of cinema and I'm rooting for the director as I thought he deserved more for Whiplash. What I meant was, I'm hoping it doesn't sweep the board, which is what's likely to happen given its appeal to the academy. I think there are some excellent films in danger of getting nothing which would be a shame.
  • Ah, glad you liked it. I really think it's a great piece of cinema.
I suspect you're right about it sweeping the board...
  • The light Between the oceans....pretty good, beautiful scenery, shame most of it was actually shot in NZ and not in WA as depicted. 7/10
  • Moonlight. Whilst not my cup of tea, they handled a difficult subject very well, especially the younger characters who I thought did an amazing job. 6.5/10 purely as it really wasnt my sort of film although I cant really fault it.
  • Just finished Snowden. Thought it was better than the reviews had led me to believe, but Oliver Stone's visual flourishes were utterly redundant, and aged him as a director. If it had been presented like, say, Breach (the brilliantly understated spy drama with Chris Cooper and Ryan Phillipe) it could have been a genuinely riveting and tense thriller.

Gordon-Levitt was very good, but when he morphs into the real Ed Snowden, it became the single worst piece of cinema I've witnessed since Young Einstein.
  • Finally saw Interstellar last night.

    Surprisingly I loved it.
  • Saw 'Lion' on Thursday. Quite incredible!

  • Saw Hidden Figures last night, very good watch and deserving of its Oscar nominations, fully expect Manchester to win best film as I think it has been the best film, yet to see Lion and Moonlight but I enjoyed Arrival and Hidden Figures the most if that makes sense!!!!
  • Watched Lion any film with subtitles that can keep my attention deserves a 10/10 but it was a great film as well. Autopsy of Jane Doe, thoroughly enjoyed the film. 8/10
  • I think i'd rather spend an evening in the company of Katie Hopkins than watch
    La la land!
  • Watched I, Daniel blake last night and enjoyed it. Interesting insight into what people on benefits/disability go through to get their payments and the issues with the system.
  • Not read through thread but went to see hacksaw ridge. Thought it was fantastic.
  • Hell or high water was excellent

I kept trying to recall where I'd seen Ben Foster before and I remembered it was Alpha Dog and he played a properly mental Jewish nazi if such a thing exists

I know he's done the voice and character before but Jeff Bridges was awesome too

  • I watched I Daniel Blake and was proper impressed.
I could relate to it 100% and if you think that shit doesn't go on,trust me it does.
I was threatened with a sanction whilst in hospital recovering from a heart attack if I didn't come to the phone (the ward manager had rung for me)
When I came out and attended a meeting 2 weeks later I was summoned by a young 23yr old lady to her office but I could not keep up with her fast walking pace and was very breathless.
I took the oppertunity to explain my predicament that I had heart and lung disease and her reply was thats not my fault is it?
I have since suffered a further four heart attacks and two Tia strokes and currently have three inoperable growing blockages in my arteries and having to jump through hoops to retain my benefits.
However I am very grateful for the help received but not for the way I was treated
    A very very good film.

I've heard really good things about the German three-hour film. It's on my 'to watch' list.
  • I avoid musicals as well . The only musical that I actually like is The Blues Brothers.

But what about Quardrophenia, how could you not like that?

I like Cabaret and The Blue Brothers but I'd contend that neither is actually a musical. To be a musical, people have to break into song for no apparent reason whilst doing something that's nothing to do with singing. In The Blues Brothers, with the exception of Aretha's, and in Cabaret as far as I can remember, the songs are part of a performance, making them films with songs in.
