Went to see La La Land last night. Musicals are not really my thing but I enjoyed it. The twist at the end I found interesting. 8 out of 10 for me. I would Emma Stone :-)

Jason Bourne 4/10. One sequel (with Matt Damon) too far.
Jack Reacher: Never Go Back 5/10. Average.
Sully 8/10. Tom Hanks brilliant in a Clint Eastwood movie that shouldn't work, but does.
Bridget Jones' Baby 6/10. Didn't get anywhere near the earlier films. What has she done to her face?!!!!!
IDR and Bourne I couldn't agree more. And Jack Reacher, I loved the first movie but found this one to be so boring.
I don't get it with Sully though. The story has no conflict and it felt so contrived to make the investigators the bad guys. And for Clint to show us the crash half a dozen times kinda summed up the script's lack of action or purpose. And the big finish had me laughing out loud. "Let's see if Jimmy 85 really could have killed 50 monsters by getting him to play Gears of War on a cinema screen!" It was only Hanks staring out of windows looking upset that saved it.

Letters to Iwo Jima being the exception I think . Watched it again recently. Love that film . Flags of our fathers which he made at the same time - not good at all.

He likes to shoot one or two wakes per scene. He even shoots the actors in rehearsal and sometimes uses those takes! I don't see why he thinks that's a good thing.
Saw Jackie. A bit meh. Got the impression the majority of the cinema were bored and waiting for the end. Only 90 mins but felt longer. Natalie Portman is good but didn't need to see on big screen.

Went to war as a medic, refused to touch a gun let alone kill anyone and single handedly got 75 wounded soldiers down from the Ridge. Proper heroic stuff and all a true story

Off to a new cinema this weekend, new to me anyway. The Curzon Goldsmiths. To see a preview of Toni Erdmann. Which looks as if it might be quite good. If you like free films/previews then fairly often on Friday or Saturday the Guardian has codes for Showfilmfirst. Seen some very good films this way.
I finally got round to watching Deepwater Horizon, thought it was very good. John Malkovich a great "villain" for want of a better word. The realisation that what you were seeing on screen was based on such horrificly true circumstances was terrifying.
Another Mark Wahlberg film, also based on true events... I watched Patriots Day this week too, based on the events of and after the bombings of the Boston marathon a few years back. Virtually all of the main characters are based on, or had story's based on real people from that day, with the exception being Wahlberg himself. Another very good film which, like Sully and Deepwater Horizon recently, it shows some genuine news clips throughout and/or at the end with survivors/people involved.
Finally, I watched the accountant this afternoon which I also enjoyed. It was certainly better than some of the reviews I've read seemed to suggest. Probably of the 3 it's the one I'm least likely to want to watch again but it's still worth a couple of hours of anyone's time imo.
Manchester By The Sea is a sombre, serious, marvellous piece of film-making. It's the kind of grown-up movie that is rare in this age when most mainstream American movies seem made for 10 year old minds. Impeccable acting throughout and if Casey Affleck doesn't get the Best Actor Oscar there is no justice.
Glad some people enjoyed Anthropoid; have to say we were disappointed. There's a lot to say in that story about the tensions and conflicts that still trouble the Czechs today, but the film didn't really bother, it was all about the shoot out. It hasn't done very well here, despite giving a global showcase to several top Czech actors and actresses.

Very thoughtful film. Casey Affleck is brilliant . It's quite depressing at times but never the less very good. Having seen this , Hacksaw Ridge , Hell or Highwater , Arrival and Moonlight of the films that have been nominated for best picture at this years Oscars i still think Hell or Highwater is head and shoulders above the the rest but I haven't seen them all yet.
Hell or High Water Finally combined a kiddies flick for the kiddies and wife, with this one for me. I was a bit worried it wouldn't live up to expectations. It wasn't what I was quite expecting - there were similarities with No Country for Old Men - but it was an enthralling movie, and the build up to the end was exciting, as there's never a guarantee with these films who will make it and who won't. Reccomendable to anyone who enjoys a well shot well acted gently paced thriller. 9/10
The Nice Guys Saw this on a long haul flight and watched it again this morning. Great sassy fim. Lots of belly laughs from me, mostly at stuff that shouldn't be regarded as funny. On the flight, I thought it sagged a bit in the middle, but watching it on the satélite today, it was a very good, funny film, and probably the best new film I saw last year, There was a bit at the start with some towels that had me weeping with laughter, and there was more to follow. 9/10
Sing This was the last one I saw with the family. I will add here that my daughters loved it, but tey generally say that about most animated movies on the way out of the cinema - only Tadeo Jones left us all cold. For me, it was a slow dull movie. I feel asleep at one point, and as I snore when over-tired, some of my memories of this film are of my wife elbowing me in the ribs. If you liked Zootropolis, see that one again, as this is bloated with interminable singing, and features a bunch of small animals, The ending lifted it a bit, but this was strictly for the kiddies 3/10
My wife is threatening my with the sequal to 50 shades if shit on valentines day. I'm trying to tempt her with La La Land, but I can't muster much enthusiasm for it after Sing. But there is'nt much worse than some silly voyeuristic film about bondage seemingly written for women who are curious but don't want to try it. I was embarrassed to walk out of the cinema after the first 'grey' movie and I'm not going through it again without an MP3.
I also saw Hacksaw Ridge yesterday. Based on a true story. Enjoyed it but I thought there were a couple of 'Hollywood' moments if you know what I mean. It didn't really need that as it was a strong enough subject without that. But, all in all a good movie but not the pick of the bunch I wouldn't have thought from the other Oscar nominations.
Watched it with a theatre full of Americans so they all clapped at the end. They tend to do that when they've watched an American 'Rah Rah' kind of movie.
