  • Went to see La La Land yesterday, won't say too much as wouldn't want to spoil it, but did come out feeling slightly disappointed.

After seeing Silence the week before, I wanted to come out of the cinema tap dancing this week but didn't.

    Next week - Jackie.....

Could you tap dance before you went in to the cinema? If not, I'd be suprised if you could have tap danced on the way out!
Passed my elementary tap exam actually so could have if I felt like it. (Actually wasn't impressed by their tap skills although heard they learnt from scratch)

Having had time to reflect on my thoughts about lalaland. I've done a u turn on my opinion. I just wanted a 'happier' ending but have come to terms with why it had to end the way it did. Naive of me to think it would be different.

I keep humming the songs all day long even though I only saw it once. Amazing how a film over 3 weeks can have that effect. I now gush about it when talking about it to people! Bizarre!
Someone on the radio mentioned the same effect of the songs. The phenomenon is called an earworm https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Earworm.

Manchester By The Sea is a sombre, serious, marvellous piece of film-making. It's the kind of grown-up movie that is rare in this age when most mainstream American movies seem made for 10 year old minds. Impeccable acting throughout and if Casey Affleck doesn't get the Best Actor Oscar there is no justice.

I watched Manchester By The Sea this week. I've been looking forward to it for a year.... I'm a big fan of Kyle Chandler and also Casey Affleck. I was surprised when I learned that they were going to play brothers though! I think the film is okay and two scenes absolutely stand out: the accident and Lee's encounter with Randy on the street. Michelle Williams is such a great actress. I simply couldn't stop crying watching that scene. That said, I think the whole film is too slow. Casey Affleck is a very talented actor but.... I've seen almost every film that he's been in and honestly speaking, he's played quite a few similar characters before (and I don't know why but to me he always seems like that kind of person). People probably just didn't know that. And as for winning an Oscar, I'm not sure if anyone has heard of the sexual harassment allegations. I guess that will be a problem. Anyway, I still think he's a very good actor and I never understand why he hasn't been a bigger star since his role in The Assassination of Jesse James by the Coward Robert Ford.
That is a really good watch. I'd forgotten Casey was in that.

I hadn't heard anything about sexual harassment claims but I looked them up and found a quite good article on them here: https://www.theguardian.com/film/2017/jan/06/casey-affleck-sexual-harassment-nate-parker-hollywood.

if it was 6music it may have been my brother. he keeps telling me he keeps finding himself whistling and humming the song 'city of stars' and he wasnt convinced about the film either.

I saw it Monday night and quite enjoyed it to be honest. It's a musical so you know it's going to be pretty cringey but once you get over that it's really well shot.

The only song I can actually recall though and I also find myself humming it now and then is 'City of Stars'.

That was news to me too. I think there's logic in the article - he is more of a darling than Parker, he has clout-wielding friends etc. But I think the final paragraph sums it up - he may possibly have been an asshole, but wasn't guilty of much more than that. And it's resolved. The article itself is dredging up a resolved case. There's absolutely no comparison to the Polanski case, and the article also ignored the fact the Birth of a Nation isn't a very good film!

Totally agree about Arrival. Now that, not Manchester By The Sea, was slow. The only redeeming thing about the film was the comedy of this 'greatest linguist on the planet" holding up a flash card saying HUMAN to the Aliens. They could have got a primary school teaching assistant to do that!

That's like saying why hire Tom Cruise for a Mission Impossible movie when you could hire Pee Wee Herman to load a gun.
    I don't quite think so.
Obviously you don't, but that doesn't make your statement any less silly. The film was about an expert learning the language and eventually saving mankind by doing so - and you're saying anyone could have done the very first thing she did. I need to read Red_in_SE8's link to see how that critique works, but yours doesn't make any sense.
Oooh, cruel. Are you trying to get us on the Argument Alert threat? ;-)
I don't think he is, he's just pointing out the fallacy in your reasoning.
Oh really? Thanks for that, I hadn't understood.
  • Have seen the following recently:
    Jackie
    Manchester By The Sea
    LaLaLand

Enjoyed all of them - good year for films.
If you are going to watch Jackie its worth watching some old footage of Jackie Onassis then the wierd accent will make sense.
  • Saw a preview of Moonlight last night.

Very good and thought provoking, and can understand why it is in the mix for the Oscars.
  • Last weekend started to watch Manchester by the Sea, got a little way in and decided that my mood was happier than the film so switched it off. My wife said let's try la la land I couldn't get past 10 mins of it and she said "I suppose I'll have to watch it when you are not here" she is a great mind reader, ended up watching Lion, great film really enjoyed it. Thanks god for Phoenix Movies on kodi, this lot would have cost me a fortune at the cinema.

  • We watched 45 minutes of La La Land and thankfully even she thought it was shit, so wasn't too painful.

No problem. Anything else you have trouble comprehending, I'll be happy to help if I can.
  • Jackie

My memories of this lady are predominantly post-JFK, after she married the overweight, but very rich, Greek shipping magnate, Aristotle Onassis. As such, she didn't hold much interest for me (recognising this is not a bio), although I do like the director, Pablo Larrain.

I thought it was interesting and pretty good overall but not, in my view, a film out of the top draw. I also found the over loud music a little intrusive at times - 7/10.

Thought the soundtrack was excellent and Natalie Portman's performance was spot on. Very surprised to see John Hurt in it.

I think the soundtrack is up for an Oscar, so what do I know.

I see Richard E Grant also popped up.
  • For anyone who liked the slow, serious, unsentimental, character-driven movie-making of MANCHESTER BY THE SEA, I can recommend a little known film by the same director, Kenneth Lonergan, called MARGARET. He dares to make a three hour film about a troubled, unlikeable girl and get you understanding her and sympathising with her by the end. Not for people who like car chases, though!
  • Margaret is one of the best films of the last ten years and I can't wait to see the new one

I agree. As I say, it's little known generally but I saw that it had been voted 31st greatest film of the 21st Century in a recent poll. Lonergan's first film, You Can Count On Me, is terrific, too.

Brilliant film. It made me so angry . I think this will be seen as the best thing Ken Loach has done.

@Nadou it sounds like you might like some of the films by Andrea Arnold, Wasp, Red Road and Fish Tank.

  • I'd add The Station Agent. A small but really lovely film. Recommended by someone on here (I can't remember who) and one of my very favourites.

Ah, but would I understand them without you helping me out? ;-)
  • Just seen Trainspotting 2 - a lot better than I expected. Ewan Bremner the standout for me.
Looking forward to the next one twenty years on.

    What did Des Doss do?

Went to war as a medic, refused to touch a gun let alone kill anyone and single handedly got 75 wounded soldiers down from the Ridge. Proper heroic stuff and all a true story
Better film than I expected to be fair....lots of it shot close by to me at Scheyville National Park and my stepson was an extra.
  • The best film I've seen lately is Nocturnal Animals. It surpassed my expectations and I totally loved it. I didn't like Tom Ford's debut work A Single Man (but the soundtrack by Abel Korzeniowski is one of the greatest soundtracks I've ever heard). I thought it was too self-indulgent and almost like a two-hour-long TV commercial/music video. But Nocturnal Animals has got stories and they're quite compelling, especially the novel one within. Jake Gyllenhaal did a wonderful job and Amy Adams was SO beautiful.... The ending was a small surprise but the film got me thinking. I know it received mixed reviews but it's my latest favourite. Not to mention the soundtrack by Abel Korzeniowski whose work never disappoints.

I think this could have been a great film Jessie, but it just didnt flow for me and seemed disjointed, they didnt do a very good job in my opinion in showing the age differences in scenes especially where Amy was concerned.....kind of spoiled it for me. Agree she is gorgeous though :) Loved her in Arrival too.
  • Im off to see Split this week. Has anyone seen it yet ?

    Excellent film 8/10 for me.
  • Im off to see Split this week. Has anyone seen it yet ?

Obviously I haven't seen it but I remember the trailer. It's really scary. I've seen quite many films that have James McAvoy in and I always think he's a decent actor.
You will love him in Split then....
  • So here's some recent films and my marks out of ten.

    Hacksaw Ridge 7.5/10
    Arrival 7/10
    Hell or High Water 8/10
    Come and find me 7.5/10
    Sully 7.5/10
    Jack Reacher 5/10
    A Monster Calls 5/10
    The Book of Love 4/10
    Fantastic Beasts 7/10
    The Accountant 7.5/10
    Deepwater Horizon 8/10
    Captain Fantastic 7.5/10
    Disappointments Room 5/10
    Magnificent Seven 6/10
    Inferno 5/10
    Snowden 7.5/10
    Mechanic Resurrection 7/10
    Free State of Jones 8.5/10
    War Dogs 7.5/10
Miss Peregrines home for Peculiar Children 7/10
That's all I can think of for now...too many stinkers to list.

Thanks for sharing. That is a very decent, balanced article. I sort of agree with Jimmy that compared to Polanski's case, what Casey Affleck did was probably just a petty crime. By the way, for a long time I refused to watch The Pianist because of that. I finally did last year and it became one of my favourite films. I've heard so many times that an artist's work and private life should be judged separately. I used to think that was not possbile for me but over the years I've changed my views on this subject. Anyway, I recommended Manchester By The Sea to my mum this week and she liked it very much. I was slightly surprised because she isn't a big fan of slow paced films and often asks me whether I have found the next 'Jason Bourne' film!

I think they did an especially poor job concerning the age differences of Amy Adam's current husband. Amy met him at least 15, 16 years ago as their daughter looks like a teenager. But he looks the same in the scenes where she met him for the first time and now. I liked the editing though. I didn't feel it was disjointed. I watched Arrival this week but felt it was not my cup of tea....

Nice to know Split is good. Just hope it's not too scary.
