Warcraft. Apart from it being based on a game I knew nothing about it. A lot of characters and story packed into the first hour. Similar to a pilot to a TV show. Found it difficult to keep up. Then I got into it and enjoyed the rest until the ending. Getting a bit sick of films which are clearly a set up for further films. Ultimately it didn't feel like a complete story.
The Theory of Everything. Eddie Redmayne was brilliant however the film seemed like it was setting up Hawking for sainthood. It all seemed to be a bit rose tinted and favouring Hawking in the break down of his marriage. They all seemed to be smiling 99% of the time.
Just back from seeing a preview of Fences, Denzel Washington's latest. This is adapated from a stage play, and it really feels like it.
It's the unfolding story of the life of a black man in 1950s Pittsburgh, which starts off positively but becomes darker through the film as things start to unravel and his difficult history is revealed through dialogue.
While the performances are excellent, especially Viola Davis as his wife, it felt to me like a long film at 2h 20 minutes, and I didn't come out feeling particulaly moved. Just hungry.
In the way it unfolds it reminded me of Locke (which I thought was excellent) but that film feels tight whereas Fences felt a bit plodding and drawn out.
Worth seeing for the performances, but I've seen a lot of really, really good films lately (Manchester, Burn Burn Burn, Trainspotting, Hell or High Water) and this is not in that league.
So here's some recent films and my marks out of ten.
Hacksaw Ridge 7.5/10 Arrival 7/10 Hell or High Water 8/10 Come and find me 7.5/10 Sully 7.5/10 Jack Reacher 5/10 A Monster Calls 5/10 The Book of Love 4/10 Fantastic Beasts 7/10 The Accountant 7.5/10 Deepwater Horizon 8/10 Captain Fantastic 7.5/10 Disappointments Room 5/10 Magnificent Seven 6/10 Inferno 5/10 Snowden 7.5/10 Mechanic Resurrection 7/10 Free State of Jones 8.5/10 War Dogs 7.5/10 Miss Peregrines home for Peculiar Children 7/10 That's all I can think of for now...too many stinkers to list.
Just finished Arrival, thought it was a very good film. I'm sure there must be something else out there but doubt we'll ever find out. I also very much like Amy Adams both as an actress and to look at !!
5/10 Gemma Arterton and paddy considine are good, the little girl who is the lead is OK but it's not a memorable film and no way is it better than 28 days later

Was an 8/10 for me, really enjoyed it. Soundtrack was bloody brilliant aswell.

Blimers, Tel !
Are you a projectionist by any chance ?
lol no...I probably watch 5-6 films a week, sometimes more
I'll add Allied to the list which I watched last night 7.5/10 Marion Cottilard was excellent in this particular film in my opinion.
Fantastic Beasts bored the life out of me. Thought it was all over the place without ever being exciting.
Its funny I didnt know it was from the same stable as Harry Potter otherwise I wouldnt have gone to see it, but it just captured my imagination and probably appealed a little to the kid in me...I thought Redmayne was excellent.

I'd add The Station Agent. A small but really lovely film. Recommended by someone on here (I can't remember who) and one of my very favourites.
That may have been me with the recommendation but if it wasn't I was remiss it not so doing. Your summary of small but lovely hits the nail on the head.
We caught up with last year's Under the Shadow. Very effective at doing what it sets out to do with minimal special effects, and it's great for brushing up your Farsi, but I don't see why Mark Kermode made it his film of 2016.
Arrival, wasn't expecting to like it as much as I did. The last 20-30 minutes proper messed with my head and I don't think I fully got my head around what was going on until long after it finished...but what a film.
Watched Patriot Day last night, very enjoyable (if you can say that about a horrible day) particularly enjoyable if true was when the FBI told one of the Terrorists wives. No, when she started the "I know my rights" nonsense and demanding a lawyer. 9/10
Watched Allied last night, the fairly new Brad Pitt film. Very well made. Decent film to watch with your missus and it's ultimately a love story with a bit of suspense thrown in. I enjoyed it.

I also watched it last night, not really a Brad Pitt fan but thought it was a good film, enjoyed Cotillard's performance. Apparently it's based an a true story the director was told, there is no evidence of the characters or the story so how much is true will never know but a good story none the less.
In the space of 4 days we've managed to see 3 truly exceptional films in the cinema, which is a rarity. All probably 9/10 films
They were: the aforementioned Manchester By The Sea, a beautifully-compiled documentary memoir by a cameraperson called, um, Cameraperson, and Toni Erdmann, a 3-hour German comedy (CL scarpers at this point) that's also hugely rich with emotion, drama and false teeth - the best of the lot. Might even be a 9.5/10, that one.

Hopefully seeing Toni Erdmann tonight - great reviews for this.
Thought Hell or High Water was good watch but a tad overrated. 98% on rotten tomatoes. Recent ones I've seen: Manchester by the Sea, Allied, Deepwater Horizon were all better in my opinion.

I agree. Toni Erdmann is by far the best film I've seen in the last 12 months and will hopefully win the Foreign Language Film BAFTA and Oscar awards. Although it's 2 hours and 42 minutes, it really didn't feel like that.

Hell or High Water is a really understated film with interesting subtext and subtle performances. Seems to me that it works better if you go in with no expectations and you get pleasantly surprised instead. That said, Allied is a hilariously stupid film, and Deepwater Horizon?! With John Malkovich chomping on the scenery?? Each to their own I suppose.

Great fun and something for everyone.
Well recommended.
