  • Seems a bit out of left field for me given then other signings we've made but who knows ? Maybe we are struggling to get the players we want and already know that Dailly and Doherty are off. Would cover in the short term. Can't really make a call as we really don't know what's going on.
  • Did you guys not see him play last season?

He is past it, even at this level. He cannot move, he is shot, bust, set for the knackers yard.

  • Don't know about this one. It could turn out to be completely untrue, or it could turn out to be a shrewd piece of business from Powell. One thing though, he's unlikely to take a very small wage, so I'd be annoyed if we did sign him and yet couldn't offer Semedo a good enough deal to stay. We'll have to see
  • As far as I can tell the first person who said we were signing Sol Campbell was Acworth a week or two back. He has then repeated it several times a day on his Twitter and any fora he isn't banned from, and somehow it has taken on an element of veracity far greater than it deserves. JA also thinks we are signing Kasey Keller (41 year old keeper on 150k a week in MLS). If you believe either of these might happen, you have as much of a screw loose as Campbell (or indeed Acworth), imho.

Does that mean I should cancel my "Keller" shirt then ?
  • if this is ackworths doing then this whole thread should be deleted to save embarrasment.
  • I'm really worried about this, if any truth in it.

Apart from the fact he is well past it, I don't see his presence as being a positive one for the playing group.

What's been good so far is that we have hired "proper Charlton": younger, hungry players.

Sol has a God complex and it's a long time since he was hungry.

So it's a no for me.

However, if we do sign him then he'll have my support like every other player (except McOxo ;-))

  • I can't understand what people have against him.
Oooh, now where do you want me to start? ;-)  Do I have to keep it clean?
  • He doesn't seem to tick any of the boxes in relation to the sort of player we would go for.
  • mind you lads he didnt fancy it at notts county did he!!! ;-)

That might have been because the money he was supposed to believe he was going to be paid didn't actually exist. I'd imagine most people wouldn't fancy working under those conditions either.

  • To be fair to him, I vaguely remember seeing an interview with him on SSN after his Notts County contract was torn up and he said that he hadnt been paid from the moment he had been there.

I agree with this so much, i could have wrote it (and would have if you didn't beat me to it).
  • Don't know what to make of this one....but before I give any thought to whether it would be a good thing or not, I have to be convinced that it isn't the kind of rumour that goes 'moo' and stinks!
  • Er, the word is Dailly didn't re-sign because we offered him less than half his wages. Let's say, for the sake of argument, thats 4-5 grand a week he's turned down. Campbell was on what, 40-50 grand a week at Newcastle? Add to that, Dailly is a known qualty to us and vice versa  i.e. he's not going to find it "difficult playing in front of small crowds" (Copyright D.Murphy). I think Rothko is on the right track with this one....
  • Campbell is a no from me. Too old, injury prone, lack of pace, not enough games in the last few seasons and would come with hefty wages. We need players for the future who are hungry for success.

Not being picky, but just want to double check, you mean 15k a week for Keller in the MLS, right ?
  • For the sake of a couple of hundred grand, (In which Campbell would earn in a couple of months) we should just sign Karleigh Osborne who was excellent last year, young with sell on value, and hungry for success! He would ofcourse want to join the Charlton revolution!!!
  • If we need the deal clinching perhaps McCormack could take him up the Oxo tower?

Sorry but someone had to do it.

  • Fair enough we need people that are 'hungry for success' but we also need a few more experienced players as a spine, it would of course depend just how 'up for it' he was but he could easily control the back four through the season and create that defensive unit we were severley lacking last season.
  • He was rumoured to be joining us years ago, Curbishley reportedly wanted a third black bent

  • I'm in two minds here - we need a couple of CBs, but we have a month to find them and clearly there aren't that many decent defenders on the transfer market at the moment, we had to up our bid for Wiggins for example. It might be that our other targets are proving elusive, so Campbell might be the only decent choice. I'd also be a bit wary about signing too many young players - you need a few experienced been there, seen it all players and Dailly has been a pretty decent player over the last few seasons. Campbell could do that job for us.

  • Swansea are interested.

    At ease.
  • Campbell would never be able to play the whole season and Taylor is 27 and Docherty is 108 so that is ample! Karleigh is tall quick and only going to improve!

We need four CBs, assuming Mambo doesn't play, so we could sign Campbell and Osbourne.

I think you are overestimating on what Dailly was on previously by quite a bit there. We weren't paying anyone 10k per week that's for sure.
  • Or Osborne and Morrison
  • Is THEMCA Karleigh him/herself?
  • Is THEMCA Karleigh him/herself?

Haha No but heard a fair bit about him last year and according to Brentford supporters he was one of their best players last year!

  • This had got Jimmy Floyd Piggybank written all over it. Will demand a fortune in wages and wont care if we go up or not.
  • Not sure about this one, sounds like a wind up. He only dropped to this level with County because they paid him stupid wages, I'd doubt his requirements have changed that much (although being based in London may be an advantage).

I don't remember seeing him play a game live last year, did anyone catch any of his matches on TV ? Was he any good ?

The last time I saw him play on TV it was one of the funniest games of the season, i think it was against Stoke. He fell over so often it was slapstick. For one of the goals they conceded that day (three or four in total) he managed to perform the single funniest back-header screw up I've ever seen. i was very surprised to find the media had ignored it, but there was probably an affair to focus on.

His ass is bigger than JFH's by a good three feet.
  • if he does sign then he wont be on high wages. powell knows the budget and wiill give wages accordingly, ifhe has a quick cb alongside it's a good bbuy.
