Agree with the vast majority of posts on this thread and was very pleased overall.
Unfortunately, I have to say Youga was at fault for both the goals. The first he was outjumped and the second he was marking Zabroski and just let the bloke make a run and didn't go with him. (Initially I thought it was down to Llera, but on reflection Youga was marking him and should have kept on him.)
Llera also looks slow.
All the rest was positive apart from switching to 4-4-2, which nearly cost us and we need to work on closing out a game still.
[cite]Posted By: ColinTat[/cite]I'm not so sure. Hopefully it happens, but there doesn't seem to be the players that take on the game and provide a bit of leadership/dynamism. With a couple more players with presence maybe. I think this team will always capitulate when put under pressure, and there are plenty of teams that can do that in this div.
Just look at the Gills, in my oppinion an average team. But they have Jackson, Oli, Barcham and Miller. Not all great players but one's that can exploit space and lack of tenacity. We still seem to give up territory and plenty of space in between departments.
Don't really know much about Gillingham's players. What type of players would you like to see Parky bring in and who would you drop? Not saying we can definitely find midfielders to improve on what we have, or that I think it's perfect, it's not, just wondering what type of players you think we're missing in midfield.
how much richardson, llara and dailly all being injured impact on the last quarter seige?
Burton didnt score but then again the team didnt create any chances for him. He was getting into good positions in the box but either didnt get the pass or was double marked. Shelvey was too deep too often when he should have been closer to deon and gett
Onward and upward. We won'we played some good stuff, weworked hard.ing in the box more.
when WW had an indirect freekick in front of the JS stand am i right in thiking that they fooooked it right up and the player involved touched it twice and the ref didnnt seem to understand the rules regarding freekicks???
If some of you thought the footie was a problem yesterday the standard of reffing was bloody awful

The rule is now that a FK doesn't have to roll the circumference of the ball before being touched by another player, the way I read it was there were two Wycombe players on the ball, one slightly touched it to put it in play, the other one didn't move at first to look like the kick hadn't been taken, and then proceeded to dribble the ball forward and the ref had seen it and it was OK, it was the crowd and the Charlton players who were lacking in knowledge. Incidentally, tell the truth ho many of us have read the laws of football, and I reckon 99% of players and coaches have never read the whole thing either, everybody reckons they know all the laws, but there is always a suprise to be found there, I credit the Wycombe lot for exploiting the law to their advantage.
A little bit surprised by some of the reactions on here.
I realy really enjoyed my football for the first time in ages yesterday. I thought we were great in the first half, the runs from Racon, Sam et al were intelligent and WW could not pick them up. We were a class above.
Second half we dropped off a pace a little and some o the last ditch defending was "exciting" but we held on, scored three goals at home and the crowd enjoyed themselves.
Richardson looks good, Dailly looks composed and I think Llera will come good, he needs to make decisions earlier.
Re: the freekick, the player who took it stopped and held his hands in a "oh my god how embarrassing" sort of way and then suddenly realised the ref hadn't blown his whistle... so he was as "lacking in knowledge" as our players...
On the subject of the game, we have three points, for 70 minutes looked a class above, still some confidence issues hungover from last season but we held firm and we're on our way to our record points haul for the league one title... so can't complain :)

That's exactly right LFE - though it wont stop Seth moaning, eh Seth?!
;o)
The fella went to dribble it, realised the other fella hadn't touched it first and put his hands to his head - just recovering in time to tackle our player who nipped in to get it off him. Not actually sure he touched it twice before our player though, but it was close.

Do you think my opinion regarding the free kick was an example of moaning....believe me I can moan much better than that!? I was at the covered end of the east stand, so those closer may have a clearer view of what happened, would like to see it again because it came across to me as a clever bit of subtefuge and exploitation of the laws.

the fella who took the free kick definatly touched it twice infact i think he was going to die of embaressment had bailey got to the ball before him however bailey never and therefore the freekick should have been re awarded to charlton
I couldn't help thinking there was a bit of a hangover from last season after Wycombe's second goal went in i.e. we immediately seemed to lose belief and surrendered the initiative.
Wycombe seemed to sense it too, as they started to pass the ball around after looking like rabbits in headlights earlier in the game.
Maybe it'll take 2-3 wins on the spin to get rid of that loser mentality that we perfected last year.
A pity because we had been so superior that the game should have been dead and buried before half time.
I agree with those who say Burton had a good game, I thought he was superb.
Good control of the long balls with feet or chest as well as flick-ons with his head.
Thought we looked well organised and solid early on and Racon, Semedo and Sam all looked class.
It looked like we would cruise it and even their first goal I convinced myself was down to Llera being off the pitch.
But we desperately need a goalscoring presence up front.
I thought the substitutions were poorly thought out and hindered rather than helped.
In the end it was just like last season, we were were desperately holding on and a better side than Wycombe would have nicked the game, which would have been a travesty.
Still it's 3 points, plenty of positives, something to build on and still time to bring in the new Hales.
Surprised and delighted by the size and positivity of the crowd
[quote][cite]Posted By: DA9[/cite]Am I the only one who thought Jonjo had a very average performance?[/quote]
nope i thought he was trying too hard he kept coming to collect the ball from defence when he needed to play closer with Burton
2 great crosses for the goals
needs to learn the benefits of playing his role not trying to do everything i think it showed his enthusiasm to be the main man which if he slowed that thought process down he will definatly become
[cite]Posted By: DA9[/cite]Am I the only one who thought Jonjo had a very average performance?
yep I agree, was trying to hard and not doing the simple things, kept dropping way to deep to pick up 5 yard passes off the back 4 and getting in the way of Racon and Semedo.
Burton needs a strike partner. He holds up the ball really well but noone is there to support him. Shelvey should go back into mid with racon because he is a creative midfielder but Parky is trying to make him Steven Gerrard but shelvey plays best when in mid. Richardson was my man of the match his assist for the second goal was brilliant!
Same old third division for me. Brought back lots of memories from Charlton in the Seventies - could we score more than we would let in?! Loads of entertainment, plenty of incidents, five goals, three points. Now all we need is to find the new Killer and I'll be happy...(Oh, and Robbie Elliot learning how to defend a corner would be useful too.) Great fun.
[cite]Posted By: Weegie Addick[/cite](Oh, and Robbie Elliot learning how to defend a corner would be useful too.) Great fun.
yep i have no confidence in this keeper he did make a couple of great saves but one of them was through his own inability to take the ball from a cross when he went walkabout and with a defence like ours you have plenty of opportuntiy to look good imo

Sat in West Upper nearer Jimmy Seed end, so had a very clear view of all the keystone cops antics of last 15 mins. Unfortunately Elliot was the root cause of a lot of the panic. Don't think he cleared one corner cleanly in this time - usually came out but missed the ball, looking more for a foul than anything. This in turn was giving the defence the jitters. Can this be coached into him? I love his attitude and the fact he's a fan. He is also a good shot stopper as you say. Just worry sometimes that he cares so much that he gets as nervous as the rest of us, and this is then evident in his play.
[cite]Posted By: Henry Irving[/cite]All players at this level will have limitations and make mistakes. If they didnt they'd be in better teams
I think that's important for us all to remember. I've seen fans, not just on here, criticize Richardson, Llera, Youga etc, and although not every player we have will be the best in the league in his position, they can all do a decent job at this level.
[cite]Posted By: StubleyAddick[/cite]Shelvey should go back into mid with racon because he is a creative midfielder but Parky is trying to make him Steven Gerrard but shelvey plays best when in mid.
I don't agree. He's not trying to make him into Steven Gerrard, he's already shown he's at his best there. He didn't have a great game, still got two assists, and in the past has had several good games while playing there.
How many good games has Shelvey had in central midfield? When I see him there I'd say if anything that's when he tries to play like Gerrard. He tries to control the game there, get back and forward, do a bit of everything, and at times it's too much. Further forward he can play a big part in moves going forward, have more shots and use his good movement a lot more.
It would also mean dropping Semedo but we need him there. Playing Shelvey and Racon together would mean Racon sitting back a lot more, we wouldn't get the best out of him.

Do you remember his home debut V Coventry end of the season two years ago? he played centre mid then and was brilliant. But i understand what you are trying to say but one thing you haven't mentioned is his vision and passing which is excellent that is why i think he should play cm.
I agree what you are saying about Racon though that is a problem we have, because burton can't play upfront on his own he is not that type of player we need to think of a formation which could suit these players because these are players who shall help us get back to The Championship!

That's the thing, apart from that game and maybe one or two others, most of his best games have been in a free role behind a striker. He still uses his passing and vision, though I guess if he played in midfield he'd have McLeod or Dickson making runs so he'd have more to aim for and his passing would stand out more.
A few months ago I thought this problem would be solved because at least one if not two or three of them would have left, but they haven't and it's a great problem to have.
I don't think 3-5-2 is the answer, or any of these narrow/diamond midfields are either, and there's no way Racon, Semedo or Bailey can be dropped. At the moment I just don't see another way to fit them all in.

he's gotta realise he can't do it all.
At one point he dropped deep calling for the ball and Dailly waved him away.
Not a great game from JJ but still two assists. if only we have such problems every week.
