Plenty to be positive about after that first half performance. I give a lot of credit to PP for getting that Charlton team to play everything along the floor. Defence lacks a bit of pace I think but I am sure that PP knows he needs to get more defenders in. Midfield lost their way in 2nd half mainly because Peter Taylor told his players to get at us and deny time on the ball. We will I have no doubt get better. Very encouraged by that three points and PP.
A team of two halves. Had a real feeling we would hold on today in that last 20 mins even with the clearances off the goal line etc. Apart from the mistakes last season we did have some poor luck there as well. We were due a bit of good fortune and last gasp defending that actually went in our favour and I just felt Wycombe would not have quite enough to get back in it though they came very very close. Yes it all went horribly wobbly in that all too familiar way but we won this time and that was no bad result in the end. We can certainly play some decent football we just need to do it for 90 minutes. And we can learn a thing or two about how to take a free kick from that Wycombe bloke eh ;-)
[cite]Posted By: WestStandCookie[/cite]I can't believe the moaning already, it's the first game of a long old season & we won.
FFS!!!!!
I think the criticism is constructive rather than moaning.
I thought we looked comfortable and Wycombe looked second best unti they made if 3-2, at that point we ran out of ideas a bit and they sniffed a chance of getting something out the game, which they wouldn't have deserved, but we dealt competently enough with the threat. On the whole the positives - good midfield outweighed the negatives (a slow defence who are just getting to know each other - only one was at the club last season). I'm not convinced that Burton is right if we are going to play 4-5-1.
On the whole I'm happy with three points and a good start to the season. At least we didn't do a Norwich...
Very happy with 3 points, but disappointed we didn't kill the game whe we had the chances. Could've been 4/5-0 before they even had a sniff, bit too casual. But still, first game of the season & we can improve. Still, 3 points at the end of the day is a very nice feeling!
shows how differently people see the game i make Parky right we were absolutly ripping wycomb to pieces we should have been 4 or 5 nil up we looked to casual i think that is all he meant by his comment
at the end we won by 1 goal but for 70-75 mins of that game we looked deserved of more than the 1 goal win
the problem with us this season is are we going to be mentally strong enough to see out victories and if it was not for elliot we would have only got a point today that save atthe end was superb in importance and the execution of it.
Why not bring Gray and Mcleod on for Burton and 1 other (i dont think it should have been Sam (sorry Jon Jo and Uncs) but i think the balance was wrong with JJ out there so i would have taken Jon jo off as he looked like he was trying too hard but not getting anywhere near form of games last year.
you can not honestly say that bringing Gray on should weaken this team
Llera won man of the match in corperate and how the fudge he did i swear i will never know or understand
Llera is going to be a big problem for us he is so 1 footed and slow that i worry about anything played near him
we should have pissed today but we never but a win at home is a good win so i am very happy here tonight
on a different note who was the man next to muzza
ageing tanned looked filthy rich had distinct look about him never ever seen him before and for the first time that i have been in the directors box seats muzza was not next to bob whitehand/head
great to see shaun bartlett at the valley today nice guy and put up with nss fatrob and me so fair play to you fella
i think we are close if not done to being under new owners but i wont bother mentioning why because it was an overheard conversation from a true charlton legend
burton was excellent today and showed everything i like about him. Great strength, good awareness to lay the ball off, and an excellent first touch (a couple of times he killed the ball as it dropped out the air with 2 defenders round him). i havent given up on mcleod getting a few goals either.
we were unlucky to conceed from a header with miguel off the pitch, and it shook us a bit.

agreed well done the deon today best i have seen from him
Thought the crowd were excellent. Whether the sunshine helped, but the fans were up for it from the start and i'm sure it had an impact on the team going on the front foot first half. The queue for tickets at 2.55 was about 300 strong, clearly a bigger walk up than expected.
Notice how Wycombe fans never left or got on their teams back when 2-0 and 3-1 down. Expected a far bigger turnout from a newly promoted side, who aren't too far away.
Racon is a class above this level.
Shelvey well below what he was capable of.
Very pleased with Richardson for a debut, looks a very solid purchase for a freebie.
I felt the structure of the match changed when Llera went off for a lengthy spell of treatment, the psychology seemed to change from doing our stuff, to being very conscious of only having ten men, and the consciousness of our vulnerability from players and crowd strengthened when they got their first, that trepidation never really left us after that. At 2-0 before lleras injury we were really going for it football wise and wanted to ram it home to Wycombe if we could, but even at 3-1 we didn't show the same desire to fully punish. i think Sam was frightening them, and taking him and Burton off didn't really work, it was a backward step, but I understood the change because at the time we needed freshening up. When it got to 3-2 it was like last season, panic,...BUT...we won. Three juicy points, and as I am judging Parkinson on results he has got the home win we needed. A draw away next week and we're OK, a win, and we have a cushion, but a defeat will summon up more of the demons we became aware of for the last 20 mins of todays game.
Now to concentrate on Hereford.
Enjoyed today more than I thought I would, reasonably impressed with the new signings especially Richardson.
Burton, Bailey, Racon, Sam were the standouts for me.
Very very suprised by both the crowd (looked like more in the ground than a lot of games last season) and the atmosphere. Not sure if the noisier people have had the opportunity to move to the North Upper but that is the loudest I have heard that section for a while.
Definite things to work on, still look panicky at times, fitness was a worry in the last 15, I still think the majority of our goals will come from midfield, but all in all a wins a win, and at times today we looked a league or two above Wycombe.
Difficult to judge after one game but i think we might actually be nearer the top than the bottom this season.

couldn't disagree with any of that, would add that Youga is still a complete clown in my opinion (he's yet to find his level and we can't go much lower!!!), as for Gray, I appreciate he hasn't played much football, but if Barnsley are still offering £600k then get on the phone tomorrow and drive him up there if you have to. Semedo MOM for me, did alot of unnoticed work today and will be very important for us this season.
I thought Richardson was brilliant, Burton was as good as I have seen him and generally the side performed well, although we could and should have killed it off as a contest by half time. Defensively I nearly soiled the Ck's at times but overall we came thru with the points and when you look around the league that was a good start for us. We need to add a bit at the back though!
Richardson looks a fantastic signing, but we all thought that with Moo2 on the first day. I'd like to think Llera was affected by having to have 11 stitches, ideally we need someone with a bit more pace though to cover Dailly, who of course was fine positionally but did get outrun at times.
Also can't help but think that Bailey is wasted out on the left, the couple of times he cut inside and did some cracking balls shows that he should be playing there. On the other hand, I wouldn't want to drop Shelvey, Racon or Semedo so I suppose he has to stay there.
It shows movement of the teams' positions up or down arrows, since the table was last amended.
Brentford won 3-1 away today but it shows the down movement arrow.
Wycombe lost today of course, but they have an up movement arrow.
Charlton's is sideways.
So WTF ....?
Unless Sky had the brilliant idea to compare this week's team positions with the alphabetical positions ...?
Pleased overall 3 points and a home win, will be interesting to see how the next half a dozen games pan out, good to see such a large walk up and good atmosphere.
Positives: - Good crowd and reasonably vocal, but then we took the lead and then quickly added a second and played some good football, who knows what the reaction would have been if we played poorly... - All three debutants had good games especially Richardson who looks very capable at this level, he got forward and linked well with Sam. Llera and Dailly both scored and did well defensively for their first competitive match together although they tired a bit later on when they picked up knocks, but both look up for the fight. Collectively the defense does look a bit ponderous, especially the two CBs and ideally I'd like to see Fortune, Sodje or someone come in who has a bit of pace to complement preferably Dailly. - Starting midfield looks strong and if they stay fit/don't get sold then they'll create enough chances to win games and be too strong for the rest of the division. Shelvey was a little quiet but still had two assists. Racon my MoM. If Bailey does get sold then his goal should add a few K to his value... - Elliott, played well made some good saves late on and couldn't be faulted for either goal. - Above all we won and got the season off to a great start.
Neutrals - Burton, held the ball up well but never looked like scoring, as long as the midfield/defence contribute that's ok, but a striker has to score goals. - Not sure about the substitutions/change in formation- Gray/McLeod both had chances and should have taken at least one of them. Last season I thought Parky was a bit reactive with the substitutions at least he was trying to be a bit more proactive today and kill the game off while we were on top, but it didn't work out as planned.
Negatives -Youga has the talent but switched off a couple of times, if he learns not to be too ambitious and focus on doing the boring stuff well he'll be ok at this level. -We could and should have killed the game off and allowed Wycombe back into the game when they should have been well and truly shut out of it, we got away with it but we won't always be lucky.

Unless Sky had the brilliant idea to compare this week's team positions with thealphabeticalpositions ...?
Sort of. Officially, if teams are level on points, goal difference and goals scored, they are placed in alphabetical order. So, before today's game, the table had 23 teams on 0 pts, 0 gd and 0 goals who were then placed alphabetically, with Southampton in 24th place on -10 pts. Hence, for example, we went from 5th to 5th!
Was in complete control until we went to 4-4-2, and our weaknesses got seriously exposed then. Wasn't convinced by Llera, he got done for pace way too often and at 6'4" he didn't win very many headers. I can see why Parky still wants to bring 2 more centre backs to the club.
Still think Parky needs to learn how to kill a game off. Too many games last year lost or drawn by last minute equalisers and today was very nearly another one of those.
I left the ground feeling as we had lost. Talk about a game of two halves. Coasting the first as Wycombe looked average at best. Second we let them back in and they took advantage and deserved a draw, I counted at least four clearances from off our goalline. We need to wise-up and quickly. Thought Burton had a decent game but note not a single effort on goal. Gray on the other hand had two and was unlucky with both imo. Need to remember he has only had 50 minutes of football in five or so months. We need to find a combination to play 4-4-2 if we want to get out of this division IMO. We are only playing five across the middle as Parky can't work out which one to drop. Thought his subs were once again bizarre and nearly cost us the game. Sam once again flattered to deceive and his first touch is awful. Thought Llera was ok but shaken up by the injury. Richardson was impressive and Elliott did well. Youga still a liability as far as I'm concerned. All in all, must do much much better.
Great afternoon, met some new Lifers and enjoyed the match. There are problems to sort but nothing that's not fixable with a couple of new faces and a bit of settling time. I thought Burton was great today. We need to stay 4-5-1 till we have a stronger defence, but i saw a lot more positives than negatives, not least that we won a game. Racon could be as important to us as Shelvey or Bailey. I'm hoping to see a few players to strenghten the squad but i thought we looked a squad who wanted to win for each other and the Club today and i've not always seen that over the past few seasons. I'm really looking forward to the rest of the season and think we'll continue to improve, especially if the takeover comes to fruition.
large, i know a game we've drawn can feel like a defeat, but i've never left a game that we won feeling like we had lost. We won today and it wasn't perfect but we have 3 points and 3 goals.
parky doesn't play 4-5-1 because he doesn't know which midfielder to drop, he does it to accomodate shelvey. PP doesn't think he's ready to play central midfield by the sounds of it but he's too good to leave out the team. shelvey was given complete freedom first half to pull the strings, because of the 4-5-1. It's bailey that suffers in the formation as he's pushed out wide but he still scored today (from a central position) and played well. The 4-5-1 also protects youga, which is important if he is a liability as you say. Parky's doing exactly what a good manager does - play the best tactics for the players you have available.
Burton was playing on his own, back to goal in a 4-5-1 and did his job very well. Gray did have more chances than burton, but then he was playing in a 4-4-2 in a totally different role.
We're still shaping the squad, give them a chance and some time.
Thought it was a good display apart from the same defensive frailties that plagued us last season. Burton was excellent, Elliot seems to have improved on last season.
Brave move by Parky going 4-4-2 to try and take the game back from Wycombe which didnt really work. I thought Gray looke a lot sharper that last season, perhaps he's on the way back to the form that won him the vote as the second most valuable player in the Championship a couple of years ago in 442 magazine
My man of the match: Rob Elliot for a couple of great saves and the reaction in blocking the scramble in the second half
Overall really positve, even with the last 20/30 min - if it was last season we would have lost that one, so we've deff improved on that!!
Also something thats not been noted above confidence is still very fragile after last season, once we've got a few wins behind us I expect us to play out games better alot more efficiently than 2day.
Elliot - glad he's our no1, great save at the death to save the 3 points and not at fault for either goal, also helped slow things down a little Richardson - Great debut, should be a reet good freebie signing linked up really well with Sam Llera - thought he was alrght another good freebie, lacks a little pace, but played some excellent cross field balls Daily - Good debut, positionally assured at the back, won everything in the air Youga - Hmmm was a little to eager to get forward but did have some great overlapping runs, hopefully daily can teach him a little positional sense thou Sam - Don't understand the flack he's got from some people, him and richardson looked very strong down the right, good game, coupel of good efforts, nice to see him shooting Racon - MOM close control is excellent, just seems effortless with the ball at his feet Semedo - Good performance, does simple stuff well, works well with racon in the middle Bailey - Looked quiet before his goal, but got well involved after, good performance, some of his passing was quality Shelvey - Worst iv seen him play but still has great control and touch, just wasn't on the same wave lengh as everyone else today, still 2 assits, great delivery from set plays (nice to see someone atleast clearing the first man from a corner!!) Burton - Good game, held out play well and was tireless when didn;t have ball, but never looks like scoring
subs Gray - not quite fit, created a great chance and had sense to round keeper rather than just blast it at him, was unlucky not to score, reserve judgement until fit Mcloed - hmmm he's quick and powerful again should really have scored but was kinda one way traffic when he was on the field thou
Thought the crowd were great, deff felt a hell of a lot busier than most of last season, couldn't see one empty seat up in H block but we def need some new songs/chants, all in all a had a blinding day and really looking forward to walsall now, might try get to Orient aswel
Love the positives most have agreed on - notably the good hold up play of Burton, the sparkling full debuts of Richardson & Dailly and the assets we have in midfield inc the more positive & confident Sam. 3 goals & 3 points on day one - what more should we ask ?
Well, a striker who can score goals would be good and as someone else pointed out, Wade Small to give us more width and another CB - possibly a fit Fortune. That'll do for me.
Still early days, with the defence continuing a mutual learning curve - it will improve. But I felt the team spirit & desire to play for the shirt came across today more than at any time last season. Long may it continue.
