  • Norwich got stuffed at home; Southampton and Millwall failed to win; Tranmere failed to score - and lost; MK Dons failed to score at home. Only Leeds, of the likely promotion contenders, managed to win. And we out-scored them.

Before we apply the microscope too closely to our fragile, new-look defence, let's remember our rivals have some urgent issues to address too.
  • Parkie just said on the radio and I kid you not that he was glad Wycombe came back into it second half as it was too easy for us in the first! , priceless
  • Really thought we played well other than our dodgy defending - in Shelvey, Racon & Bailey we have a midfield to match any in this division.

I thought Sam & Semedo did well & I was impressed with Dailly & Llera.
  • Need to kill opposition off when we have them on the rack. Forward (s) still not doing the bizz. Held out though better than most efforts last year.

Newish team needs to settle. Hopefully lessons learnt and still 3 pts in the bag!
  • I'll reserve judgement on our defence, all I will say is we seriously lacked pace at the back.

For 40 mins we were in total control. For the last 20 we were a shambles at the back.

I really think Parkinson hurt us today. There was no need to switch from 4-5-1 to 4-4-2. At times with 4-4-2 we were overrun.

A win is a win I guess, but we are going to come up against much much better sides than Wycombe this season.....

Evidently at 3-1 up, and in control, Parky decided to go for goals.

There's a case for, "if it ain't broke don't fix it".
  • And every one wants 442 typical he tries it and gets slated however will he please some people? 3points damn it!!!!

Obviously that is right. But, in the context of it being the first match of the season, we learn more about our own abilities (and frailties) but making changes like this. Had our 4-4-2 turned into goals from our two "strikers", we'd be sitting pretty with a fat 5-1 or 6-1 win. As it is, we know our 4-man midfield can be over-run by a determined 50man opposition.

I think it's right to experiment, as long as you learn from it.

Totally agree. If he wanted to take Burton off a straight swap for Gray would have been fine.

We looked at mess with 4-4-2. Shelvey ended up on the right and vanished from the game.

Was actually impressed with Dailly. He won virtually everything in the air. He would benefit from some swift legs next to him though. Respect to Llera for playing with a head injury but he worries me. I suspect he may cost us a few this year.
  • taking Burton off was a mistake (unless he had taken a knock). After that we never kept the ball up front - it just kept coming back.

    Hardly slated him.

I simply suggested that his change hurt us. It did. We were overrun once we changed. With the players that we have it has to be 4-5-1.

Yes we got 3 points, the change very nearly made it 1.
  • Game of two halves.

First half was embarrassingly one-sided, men against boys. Only when we went down to ten men did they get a look in.

Second half was an absolute joke. We were all over the place at times. For some reason our midfield massively ran out of steam - much the same as they kept doing last season.

I can't remember coming out of a game having won (which is unusual enough) but feeling so disappointed.

Still, it's scores on the doors at least.
  • think today showed what burton brings to the side.

Should have buried them so dominant were we but could easily have lost at the end.

A newly promoted side smelt blood and went for it.

A newly relegated side lost its confidence and shape
  • Once again Charlton were well on top, but again they allowed Wycombe cack in it in the 74th minute.

    From the o.s

    Must be true then
  • Parky must have wanted to make a game of it. Bringing on McCloud and Gray added nothing, to me they looked lost. But to be fair to them its not easy comming on and slotting straight in. Subing 2 upfront at the same time cant be right.
Apart from that I thought at times its the best we've played for a long while.

Service in the Oak needs improving.
  • The sort of game I think would have ended as a draw last season, so we've got to be happy with a win.

On a different matter, does anyone else turn around to look for the sniper nearly every time Bailey gets fouled or loses a tough 50/50 challenge?
The rolling around like he's suffered a career-threatening injury, followed by a jump to his feet a minute or two later, seems a bit predictable now.

    Harsh on Bailey.

Have seen the replay of todays tackle. He was taken out completely. Man first, ball second.

I read in the week that we had tried to sign Duberry. Thank christ we didn't. Is as bad as ever.

    Agree with this.

I thought his leg had come off in the centre circle. Then he managed walk off without the need of the paramedics.

  • I applauded parky for taking Burton off and putting Gray on..........but not subbing Sam as he was our real only outlet.

Once Sam left the pitch we didn't know where to go. We have to sign up Wade Small as cover or another day that will have been a draw.

I thought Burton had a good game today. Gray was his usual ineffectual self.
  • As the bbc commentator stated..... The subs have done nothing, except put Charlton on there backfoot...... and why two at once..... Why has Burton been subbed...

There was also criticism of the defence, from what seemed like a good Charlton controlled game against a team yet to get the feel of this division, it turned into a panicky uncontrolled helter skelter game.

Why is it that tour defence cannot control a game, albeit with ten men!. This seemed like a raw team Charlton were playing against, and the post press conference comments are I am afraid nonsense.

Three points are three points, but a lot of homework to do for Parky by the sounds of it, whose control of the game seemed to unbalance the side.......
  • The defence needs to settle down and get to know each other but any game that ends in three points isn't to be sneezed at.
  • A characteristic Charlton performance.

Looked totally dominant but missed two goodish chances to go 3-0 up and then contrived to do things in as difficult a way as possible and almost threw away two points but clung on having worn all our nerves to shreds!

Agree with Henry about Burton. We looked worse when Gray came on although part of that could be down to going 4-4-2 and getting overun.
  • Indeed without Burton there's no forward that the ball sticks to. Even if you like Semedo, as soon as the formation goes to 4-4-2 he need's to go off. He lacks initiative, surrenders territory and his passing is poor when it has to be positive.
  • But why do we get overun when we don't have the extra man in midfield? We should be able to play 4-4-2 , certainly in this division, without getting constantly swamped in midfield.
  • I had to close my eyes everytime Llera had the ball at the back, he looked very uncomfortable by the end.

I thought Burton was superb today, as was Racon, Shelvey was disappointing though imo. Once everything beds in we'll be ok 3 points is the perfect start... well near perfect when you look at Colchester!
  • Semedo is going to be important for us. He won't always get noticed, but he was defending well most of the time in midfield. I've seen teams suggested with Shelvey taking Semedo's place, but I really don't think we'd have the right balance if Semedo is dropped.

Sam - same as usual, some good moments, won the free kick for one goal, involved in one of the other goals, involved in some good moves but makes some silly mistakes. Still, at this level, we won't find better than him on the right wing. Like Semedo he will be important for us.

Burton did well, won't score many (though Sam should have set him up instead of messing around with the ball), but has a good first touch, holds up the ball well and rarely gives it away.

Defenders need time to settle in, but they'll all be fine at this level. Richardson like in pre-season works well with Sam at times. Llera similar to what I've seen so far, does fairly well but looks a bit clumsy, will make mistakes but he's good enough for League One.

Shelvey had a poor game, his touch, passing, decision making all seemed to be off, things on his day he does almost perfectly.

Should have been 3 or 4-0 up at half time and finished the game off, but if we keep the players we have we will improve. Just need more cover at centre back, another option to come on out wide and if possible a better striker, even if it's just as an improvement on the bench.

in a way i agree with that statement. The 2nd half have us a real work out and after am easy 1st half emphasised that this is no easy league. at the end of the day we won we got 3 points when our key competitors failed. We have been looking 4 exciting footballl that does with 3 points and we got it today, nice one lads
