>>May be. But I think it says more about the state of modern football (and the modern world with its obnoxious cult of celebrity) than the plight of Charlton.

complete cnut and a parasite this planet doesnt deserve
I really can't see that at all. We sold him because Leeds came in with a big offer and we needed to strengthen in other areas. As a player for us he was a class act with a bit of an edge thats all.
i think he is referring to his recent spell with us when he deliberatley got sent off to miss fixtures over the holiday period
Is that true or just a convenient interpretation of random events?
Also I thought he did OK when he came back to us. I remember his reaction against Palarse at Sellout Park at the end of the game.
Plus he's a good Norfolk boy and I believe in standing up for my fellow carrot crunchers......:o)

this is my point, probably should have gone on and been playing at a higher level and in the england set up for much longer than he was.
his attitute and the fact he is a complete prick and doesnt give a flying fcuk about anyone especially when nearing a christmas break draws me to my conclusion.

correct, i despise loan players and complete cnuts like this have helped to leave us in the position we are now coz they dont give a toss about charlton.
There he was, the greatest footballer in the world, living in a bed-sit room in Mrs Mop's two-up-two down terrace house. And the wild man of soccer was meekly saying, 'yes Mrs Mop, no, Mrs Mop, i'll take my shoes off at the door so I don't make your carpets dirty, Mrs Mop'.
Different age. Different mores. You can argue its for better or for worse. But I, for one, know exactly what Damon Albarn meant when he titled that Blur album 'Modern Life Is Rubbish' ....

Was that the same George Best who literally pissed his career - and did all that before most if not every current footballer alive had even been born.
True there was generally more player/club loyalty then but there were also mercenaries and I'm very wary of believing in the arcadian dream that everything was better yesterday. In a few years time people will look back on this era and think it golden.
Can't see beyond Marcus Bent and Big Fat Jimmy in my "wouldn't piss on if he was on fire" list, I'm afraid. Greedy, lazy, bastards.
At one time, it would have been Parker - but for all the cash he's earned, I bet a great part of him wishes he'd stayed at Charlton, got us into Europe and him into the England team and off to a proper big club. He could have achieved so much more - and I bet he knows it, every time he turns out for poxy West Ham.
I just don't think Rommedahl's head ever got around the complexities of English football, and as Bing says, he was more of an athlete than anything else. (Plus I met him at one of Henry's dos in Bromley and he was a sterling chap, smarter than the average dumb-arse footballer and with a cracking sense of humour.)
As for Murphy, I suspect he's an emotionally needy character - had bricked himself into a "superstar" status, needed the approval of others and couldn't cope after Curbs dropped him. And he must have been hurting when Stevie G and co won the European Cup without him... that said, I still screamed "wanker!" at him when his mug filled the screen on last night's MOTD.

Yep, and for me only Darren Pitcher deserves to be compared with them. An avergae footballer given his chance at Charlton after relegation and after we'd sold Johnnie H and despite that his attitude was that the game owed him a living.
I was in the Roker hotel last season and spotted Andy 'Pie Eater ' Reid propping up the bar with a group of measly hanger-ons and I heard him scoffing Charlton so I shouted out in a loud voice...
'You didn't say that when you played for them, did you, you fat basterd....'
Luckily I was with several of my mates and he didn't dare say a word...
Having suggested the idea, I rather hoped that somebody else would do the work!
Only one quibble with your team of shadows - am I being wildly over-optimistic in hoping Fleetwood might yet become visible and do a job for us in div three ?

Well in that case, BFR, I'm thankful to be old enough that I probably won't still be around to tell 'em they're talking s***e!
But you then remind of Jesper Blomqvist. Didn't he arrive around the same time - and appear even fewer times?
Topic for a different thread , perhaps, the all-time invisible Charlton XI...
Blomqvist, Mustoe, Rowett, Gibbs, Todorov etc etc...
'You didn't say that when you played for them, did you, you fat basterd....'

Never felt so satisfied in my life...

Rowett

Gibbs
Mustoe

Pouso
Blomqvist

Fleetwood
Probably a load more that could be there. Stephen Hughes, Sorondo, Paulo Monteiro, Dorian Smith, Scott & Dean Sinclair.
There's all the foreign youngsters that were meant to be promising, Tanska, Gislason, Christensen, Mikkel Jensen, Brandao.
Even more obscure checking the 99/00 squad, Steve Barbe, Juan Cobian, Antti Niemi, 98/99 David Tuttle and Emeka Ifejiagwa.
Having suggested the idea, I rather hoped that somebody else would do the work!
