Who is your least favourite Charlton player of all time ?

  • Pitcher - one flukey goal and he thought he was the mutt's nuts.

Of course, after he demanded a big money move, he went from strength to strength. Not.

(Dis)honourable mentions to Rommedahl, M.Bent, Faye, Traore and JFH.

Whoever mentioned Holland is obviously a WUM.
  • Never had a Charlton player I've really hated. Players who have really disappointed would be a better question.

F*** me - if that's the criteria I'll get RSI and a crippled back from keyboard overuse...
  • Rommedahl and Fortune for me.

    Todorov?
  • Maybe, but the other two definately hurt.
  • Does Todorov even qualify? If we're including invisibles, I think I'll nominate Corey Gibbs !
  • Or Gary Rowett!
  • Marcus Bent, Piggybaink, Faye and Traore are all up there but for me it has to be (by some way):

    Rommedahl

because of how much he cost, how big a name he was in world football, and how completely useless, gutless and infuriating he turned out to be (even allowing for the goal against Palace). How many league goals did he score at home for example?

In defence of Rommedahl, Curbishley asked him to play as a defender along with everyone else except Bent. And never regularly played him. (Dunno honestly why he bought him if he was always gonna do that). Ironically only Dowie told him to stay up front during opposition corners and run at defences.

Always clapped the crowd (unlike many others) who had travelled up North spending their hard-earned to watch complete dross etc, and as for saying "I don't want to play in the Championship", if you read/listen to interviews he was always a bit eccentric/honest for his own good. The likes of Herman just kept their mouth shut.

I still say (yes *yawn* I know), that playing attacking football with him, Bent, Murphy etc we would have won more matches than lost.

Not at all mate, it's all about opinions.

I think Curbs saw him on the International stage and signed him on the back of that. I'm sure he saw him as a player who could give us the edge and then in training and in games he genuinely couldn't work out why he didn't produce it. If it was all down to Curbs though, why did Dowie, Les and Pardew not find a way of bring the best out in him?

In my opinion Rommedahl couldn't adapt to the pace and intesity of the English game because he was an athlete first and not an instinctive footballer and something inside his head stopped him from adapting.

I think there's definitely something in that, and he seemed to admit as much. He still played some blinding games for Denmark while he was with us.

Unbelieveable he never scored at the Valley, though. Though he wasn't played *that* often. I do think he was wasted in defensively minded games though. Remember the start of that season when we beat Boro, Pompey and Sunderland etc etc. He was so up for it and playing really well.

Oh yeah.. actually you're right. I utterly despised him as a footballer, THE worst player in a Charlton shirt I've ever seen.

LOL, lets just not go there.
  • Paul Konchesky because he typifies the overpaid arrogance of modern footballers. Got a few England caps & a flash motor & then started to question Curbs. At Premier level he was a moderately skilled grunt?

Nope, I can't agree with that one at all. I like Konchesky, still do. One of those players that Curbs just didn't know what to do with. The fact tat he's regularly playing in the premiership surely negates your argument.
  • It wasn't an argument just a prejudice. And don't forget the clown he's replaced at the Yammers?

Salako and Tiler are the best shouts I've seen so far.

Current candidate is Semedo, Hope he goes in the summer.

Neither had their best days for us, but didn't do anything shitty a la Pitcher, Defoe or Murphy. Salako is always very positive about when he's on Sky. Your views on Semedo are just plain mental, so I'm not going to attempt to debate the point.

Yep, someone looking for an argument I think...

Salako put in some good performances and Tiler was a limited player but an honest trier.

If they are the worst two players then someone has missed an awful lot of football recently.

You should really read the title of the thread before making a fool of yourself. It doesn't mention ability anywhere, it merely asks for you least favorite players.
So, "you" least "favorite" players were one that put in some good performances and one that put in a decent, if limited shift? I guess the point is that your criteria are kind of skewed. I suppose the point is that - whatever the thread title - that there's a bit of implied rationality. If I said Rufus, you'd probably say (and I'm not saying that in case your period's started) that is a stupid and irrational choice. Saying that you hope that the versetaile and hardworking Semedo leaves illustrates why people think we have shit, know-nothing "support".

But I guess you're technically right, even if it's sad and I do wonder who's made a fool of themselves here..

Fair enough Darren, and that's true.
  • Marcus Bent for me, nothing nice to say about the feller.

  • Purso and Gibbs......couldn't stand em ;o)
  • Gibbs doesnt count because he doesnt exsist.

he is a "virtual" player who was dreamt up by the club, and the salary earned goes towards the bubbly at the end of season shareholders party!
  • Hasslebank. unt©
  • Pitcher ... no competition in my mind
  • Can't disagree about most of the usual suspects named above. It makes me wince just to see all their names collected in one place. The fact that so many of them are so recent helps to explain why we are where we are today. Half of the loanees we've endured in the past two seasons should be in there too.

Do the defects of older players grow dimmer in the memory? Maybe, but in most cases they are much harder to dislike because even if their ability was limited at least you felt they were trying.

I really can't see that at all. We sold him because Leeds came in with a big offer and we needed to strengthen in other areas. As a player for us he was a class act with a bit of an edge thats all.

May be. But I think it says more about the state of modern football (and the modern world with its obnoxious cult of celebrity) than the plight of Charlton.

Do you remember that documentary about George Best which the BBC screened when he died - and the historic 1960s footage of him with his landlady, when Man U put him into 'digs' ?

There he was, the greatest footballer in the world, living in a bed-sit room in Mrs Mop's two-up-two down terrace house. And the wild man of soccer was meekly saying, 'yes Mrs Mop, no, Mrs Mop, i'll take my shoes off at the door so I don't make your carpets dirty, Mrs Mop'.

Different age. Different mores. You can argue its for better or for worse. But I, for one, know exactly what Damon Albarn meant when he titled that Blur album 'Modern Life Is Rubbish' ....

i think he is referring to his recent spell with us when he deliberatley got sent off to miss fixtures over the holiday period
