first person to appear before the courts for looting..............
a 31 year old teacher.
A fine example for our children to follow and be influenced by if guilty.
He'll get six of the best .. months not cane strokes
The magistrates courts can only impose a maximum sentence of six months, it seems most of the cases will be referred upwards where sentences should be longer.
But here I'm all for a spot of community service - make them clear the mess up first, and then jail them.
He's out on bail and that sends a bad example to potential rioters, but of course, a lot depends on the severity of the charge. How many bailees will skip and just not turn up, giving the Police major problems in tracking them. The US system of bail bondsmen is the answer, turn up for court or get a bounty hunter on your tail. I suspect the arrest figure is probably around 1,000 by now, but as many rioters as possible should be remanded in custody (and not fed)

There have been over 1,000 arrests to date and apparently all London police cells are full and I'd imagine a fair few outside London. The prisoon population is already at highs - around 85,000 or so with little or no spare capacity, so the problem is going to be finding space for them once they get jailed.
They'd be foolish to skip bail - they are already looking at reasonably long prison sentences, but not that long. Skipping bail will add a few more months on to the sentence, those that do get jailed will be out in two/three months as the prison system is sevely clogged up already.
I think the person tried this morning was a school 'worker' - so I don't think that they are likely to be a teacher, or it would be all over the tabloids....

All cells in Bromley are full. All cells in Lewisham are full as well as a few spots in Birmingham and Wolverhampton. Where should they be kept?

in stocks on the streets they burnt and smashed up, let the business owners deal with them!
Great summary here "It is a complete lack of responsibility in parts of our society, people allowed to feel the world owes them something, that their rights outweigh their responsibilities and their actions do not have consequences. Well, they do have consequences

perhaps Tesco can be persuaded to go into the legal custody business .. the company seems to excel at everything else .. but seriously, it is a problem. Many of the detainees will be juveniles and there have reportedly been disturbances at Feltham and Bristol Young Offenders Centres. It would be a good idea to detain them as far away from their home as possible, isolate them from friends, family and bad influences, let them stew alone for a while, though that is probably taboo under human rights legislation .. what's the position in Scotland and Northern ireland I wonder .. is the Maze still open for business?
The EDL thing is something whipped up by the media cos about 10 EDL supporters were in Eltham.
It wasn't quite a wise move to substitute the "English" with "Eltham" in a play on words; because all it meant is everyone thinks it's the proper EDL.
Posts on twitter saying 2,000 NF in eltham marching to Lewisham. Would be amusing if it wasn't so serious; stupid rumours like that just incite others to fight against the supposed NF and worries people. Not good.
& that idiot Nick Griffin doesn't help. What a horrible bastard he is. Using this for his own political gain. Pretty sure if he turned up last night he would've been booted off very quickly!
Just came through Eltham - unbelievable police presence. About 10 transits parked in High St/Well Hall Road from the following forces: Wales, Humberside, South Yorkshire and Cambridgeshire. About 20 Met Police, Specials and PCSOs patrolling the High Street.
Then 7 armoured police trucks and about 5 Met transits went down Well Hall Road and then came back up heading towards Mottingham. Got to the junction of Westmount Road and two City of London transits passed.
As an ex Police Officer from the 50's and 60's I could easily take part in this debate. However can I point out that you are all discussing the end point of a process that begins when a child is born. The Government ( when they concentrate on the big picture instead of just themselves ) should be looking at how the Country has reached a point where hooligans, thieves and various morons are prepared to organise criminal activity, setting fire to buildings, ruining peoples lives, and what was inevitable causing deaths now. The process begins with the childs parents, then on to their School education, and is heavily influenced by their social surroundings. Standards of behaviour have lowered consistently during my lifetime, and until the powers that be wake up and understand what is needed that process will continue. I give thanks every day that I am approaching the end of my life, if I was a youngster I would be out of this Country like a shot.
Sad to say, but, My Dad (at 78) says similar things.
Eltham stood today. Charlton, Millwall, West Ham and just locals. police closed pub at 6.30pm for no reason, which was very stupid.
People tried to march to lewisham but got stopped by loads and loads of police. Prob around 300 of us. Police siad they appreciate everyones help but they could not just let hundred of people go to Lewisham.
Heard on police radio " we have stoped the white group getting towards the black group" even though I did not see any "groups" of black people..
Again, I will ask, "Eltham stood Today". Why leave Eltham, which You were "protecting" to march to Lewisham ?
Still mate where was your "red wedge" ? or do they only go on the street when white people band together ? please do tell when the Turks,Kurds and Asian people band together the left holds them up as heros but when its white people they are a racist gang ? just who are the real racists ?
Glad they were there glad it shows up the Left for the pathetic apologists they are and im glad i was there briefly.
I am in No way criticisin' anyone who stands up for their family, friends, business or property. I was a member of the Labour party until "they" won the election under the "New Labour" banner. They (& Jim Dowd mp who is probably more right-wing than....[edit]) sent Me umpteen membership forms.I can't support any political party. Yes, I'm what a lot of people call me, a "Socialist". Yes, I know in reality I will never see what I believe in. And Yes, these **** who are looting are complete **** (insert your own words here). But, I don't think the fact that people all meet up in one place "To protect it" and then leave it on a 3-4 mile walk to "protect" another area rings true.
As you know, I'm one of the biggest cowards in the world, but if I had to "protect" my "manor" I like to think I would. I wouldn't go somewhere else. Sorry if I've upset/annoyed you, its just my way of thinking.
mog, only around 150 tried going to lewisham and they were looking for a row.
was still a very high number of people in eltham 'protecting'
Mentioned this yesterday before anything even happened and got a little bit of stick from a few on here
Opinion again randy. How do you know this for a fact? There was no trouble in eltham and no arrests. Your wanting to turn this into a race thing mate. In London, the majority of looters are black. Do you agree? This is not racist just social commentary.

Wasn't having a pop at you but my point was that standing back meekly had achieved exactly nothing over the previous three days (or last twenty years). Sometimes you need to make a stand and anyone who makes that stand needs to be willing to have a tear up because these scum will sense weekness.
Now that the fear has subsided we are seeing the 'community' leaders coming out with the usual protection racket, 'Give us more taxpayers money or this will happend again', the problem is that money can't bring up kids, or undo a braindead ghetto culture or teach people right from wrong.
I don't know where we go from here but the banks empty this time.
Channel4 news just showed the Eltham lot throwing stuff at the top deck of a bus that three black lads were travelling on. I'm with MOG on this one. The intention of most may have been to protect Eltham, but some were clearly just up for a ruck, and trying to march to Lewisham was just stupid.

See the video half way down page called THE MOMENT RIOT POLICE TACKLE SUSPECTED LOOTERS
At last. Cops deserve a medal but no doubt some human rights lawyer is already drawing up a case.

It'll be interesting to see how this impacts on home crowds at Millwall...
True, but that should be offset by the arrest of some teachers.
