How's that defending the streets. A group of people running up the middle of the road terrifying car drivers shouting and swearing. Sure they weren't busting windows, but it's not exactly the Guardian fcking Angels either, is it?
I notice how there is no mention of Sikhs with swords in your comment, I guess its ok to bash these people for defending there areas because they are mainly white and singing England songs.
Im glad everyone in London had a safer night, just hope its clamped down over the rest of the country now.
Perhaps The Sikhs should be protecting more than one building? The whole argument about one being in the right and the other isn't is absurd. Well done to both groups.
The BBC really cheesed me off last night .. Sikhs mobilising to protect their temple are 'brave citizens mobilising to stand up against the mob'... .. BUT .... predominately white groups in Eltham and Enfield are regarded as potential vigilante groups mobilising along ethnic lines ..... the 'media class' have a lot to answer for in their choice of terminology and subject matter. Basically they do not have a clue as to how people live their lives outside middle class enclaves
Just having a coffee with a police constable mate who has been up in Birmingham all night. He is absolutely shattered (probably because he usually sits on his arse on his motorbike! - and yes I did say that to his face!) He says the teams he joined were instructed to be more aggressive and that three days of planning has seen better police intelligence, inter-force communications/liaison officers and tactics.

I agree, which is why I edited my comment as soon as I posted it
Glad about the people in Eltham-------------------------glad---------------------------i went to Eltham and i dont give a shit if the group there called em selves EDL -----BDL------fred----bert or Harry. Im glad that some people actually had the balls to try to keep the scum bag looters off the street.
Last night on TV a community work who was a blk guy in his 30 "im ashamed to be a blk man tonite after what i have seen"
Yesterday in Bristol a guy who got 13 years for the 1980 riots a blk guy saying that "his people shouldnt be doing this"
Or at 1 am a Jurno in Ealing saying to people " i wouldnt go down that street if your white as you will get mugged"
not the daily mail people on TV as it happened.
Where were the Anti facist peoples army ? to busy being glad that the riots are happening. Where were the anti facists ? dont worry they will be all over it now a group of mainly white people mobed up
Are the looters black ? not all---we all see it---------are the majority ? YES thats yes yes yes----------------ignoring that fact and trying the usual PC left wing hog wash of DEFLECTION by saying the Eltham people are "racist" is part of why these kids think they can get away with it.
Defend your self your are racist (if your white )----------and dont worry the legions of the apologists of the left are on the way to defend the looting scum and make sure huge wedge of more tax is spent to help the poor deprived liittle soldier gangstas.
Oh and buy the way carry a gun get shot dead is OK with me thats dead -----as in not alive.
Not sure of this should wait until later, if so ignore, I understand people may have more pressing concerns. Anyway here is my thoughts on the recent events.
In 2004 I qualified as a teacher and went to work in a secondary school in Reading. 80% of the students were well behaved and well mannered, however there was 20% of the school population that were neither of these two things. It was this 20% that got all the attention, the special measures and yet seemingly there was little that could alter their poor attendance records, lack of discipline or respect for authority. It was not a racial divide, nor religious but it was a economic location divide. The chances were if you were raised in a certain district you'd be in that 20%. I felt a general unease teaching certain classes and at times suffered verbal and physical violence. At this time living on a teacher's starting wage in Reading by self meant I too had to live in one of the less desirable districts. I hated going out at night, the air of danger in the neighbourhood was palpable. I knew that this current state of affairs in Reading could not continue. A whole group of society boxed off in a location of self destructive despair, anger and disenfranchisement. In no way do I condone the actions of this 20% of the school population or 20% of the population of Reading, but the problem was there in 2004-2006 and was fundamental in my decision to leave the UK.
I will not compare Thai society to that of the UK, I feel that there are similarities but also many differences. One thing I will say is that here I feel safe. Walking the streets of Bangkok I do feel scared.
I have returned to the UK every summer and two of the last 5 Christmas holidays. It is my home, my family are there in Tonbridge (yes I'm a Kent addick!). Every time I have come back the sense of unease returns to me. If I accidently bump into someone in the high street, there is a scowl and swear word that follows. If I go out for a drink in the pub there seems to always be an air of possible violence. A sense of don't look this way or you might get a kicking. I recently returned to Bangkok form three weeks in England. The unease and tension in certain districts of London was intense. I stayed in a hotel down some a side street from Old Street station and at night coming back from a meal in Covent Garden the atmosphere was hostile and unnerving. I love England, but I am sad to say I was glad to land back in Bangkok.
So what is the point of this? Well lets not assume this is a problem brought on by recent actions from the government. I have witnessed and felt the force of the 20% (maybe this figure is too high for all of the UK) since 2004 and I am sure it was there before. These problems cannot be solved overnight and they will not go away. They may be hidden again for a while but I fear that they will still be there, simmering, waiting to boil over at a given opportunity.
Is there an answer? Well yes there is, there always is, but have we found it yet, no. When society breaks, fragments it cannot be healed by casting off the broken pieces and hoping they will wash away. Somehow they need to be joined back to the whole, welded on again.
Dear Lifers, I suspect the path ahead will be a tricky, painful (at times), long and challenging one. Engage the communities of the 20% but don't pander to their every whim. Listen to middle England but lets not be consumed by their 'scare mongering'. Acceptance that the UK is different from what many of us imagine it should be is crucial.
My wish is that one day I feel at ease in the UK again, to feel it is the right society to raise my children. But for the moment stay safe one and all.
reinforcements are on the way .. Scottish police are mobilised to come to London according to radio 5Live .. Donald .. where's yer troosers
That's all we need. A group of yoofs and a group of jocks, with the law abiding person stuck in the middle completely at a lose as to what is being spoken.
The Police are finally getting the respect they deserve, they do a difficult job whilst being hamstrung by the courts and legislation forced upon them by pc politicians.
Steady on there! It situations like this they earn respect but there will be plenty of situations in the future where they will lose it again. It's a worry that we've had vigilante groups roaming the streets a year before The Olympics! Also quite a few do the majority of them no favours at all.
There is bad apples in every walk of life, having worked with them for 18 years 99% of those I have met are just as pissed off as the rest of us. Blame the organisation not the individuals
I can quite understand why people feel like this, and the thought of giving these lowlifes anything is sickening to say the least. Ultimately though, it ain't going to happen. And it's not going to happen for a very good reason: it would do more harm than good. Frankly, loads of these scum are unemployable. If they are unemployable and unable to get benefits, that is only going to lead to one thing - even more crime.
My own particular knee-jerk solutions are as follows. Though just like the posters of that petition, I haven't thought these through to their logical conclusions:
Curfew for all under 18s.
Electronic tagging for all convicted.
Removal of passports (if they have them).
Any serious offenders to be permanently deported to a cold island in the middle of the Atlantic.
Compulsory temporary sterilisation of all teenagers (only reversed after the age of 18, on proof that they can support a child economically, physically and emotionally).
Bangkok Dave, what if the 20% don't regard themselves as being part of a community? When a senior police officer said that he'd been in touch with community leaders and asked for calm I looked at the images of the rioters and thought there was little chance that such a request would have any effect. As you say, no quick and easy answers.
I would hawot it their fckin head off without thinking if it was my family in danger or they were stealing off me. If they were looting then serves them and their family fckin right.
Best be prepared for this. It'll be all over the media in the next few days - wall-to-wall 24 hour news coverage has to be filled with something. There'll be hand-wringing, chin-stroking pillocks on one side trying to 'understand' it all (despite never having lived anywhere near the scum doing this, or having gone to school with any of them, or grown up in fear for yourself if you have to go out at night) and moaning about all the youth centres being closed on one side; Knuckle-dragging fuckwits on the other saying it's all because of the blacks/asians/eastern europeans/whoever they feel like singling out coming over here and taking our jobs & dealing drugs (despite them all getting f***ed on charlie every night and never having done a day's honest toil in their lives).
All predictably depressing.
Agree with Leroy.
Good to hear from NLA about the make up of the march in Enfield. Good on you mate.
Predictable that Griffin has crawled out from under a stone and, like Livingstone, is trying to score cheap points.
Would be great to see their benefits taken away. Would never happen though as it would be seen that we are denying them their human rights to sponge off of a society.

Don't forget that Mark Wadsworth bloke, doing exactly the same thing.
Did anyone hear Boris Johnson on Radio 4 this morning? The man is such an infuriating charlatan. What a pity that HE wasn't eaten by a polar bear when he was an Eton schoolboy .. oh .... while we're at it, him and (call me Dave) Cameron

Was he the guy shouting at Livingstone? Not seen him but yes him as well. He and Griffin are two sides of the same coin much as both would hate to admit it.

Why does it matter where he went to school?
Of course, as the two girls who raided Croydon said to the BBC, "it's cos of the conservatives innit"

why does it matter? .. because Eton products are generally rich toffs who have no interest other than their own class and the welfare of the same .... OK?
Ok - I am fine for generalisations. The local comp to me produces pikey layabouts who have a chip on their shoulder about people who have done well in life.

ummmmm - how many of these despicable Eton schoolboys were burning & robbing last night? That's more the of the issue - both in general & on this thread in particular. Could you not do the whole class warfare thing some other time?

He is absolutely shattered (probably because he usually sits on his arse on his motorbike! - and yes I did say that to his face!)
He says the teams he joined were instructed to be more aggressive and that three days of planning has seen better police intelligence, inter-force communications/liaison officers and tactics.
The problem may come next weekend when shifts that have been shuffled all over the country have to be normalised and the extra presence in the hot spots may have to be reduced. There is some thought that the more effective and aggressive police presence may deter repetition at all, though as he said they are so thick as to be unable to see any bigger picture, just focussing on smashing things up to nick stuff in the shops they know.
The Birmingham rioters started fires, called the Fire Brigade then attacked areas a few blocks away knowing the police would gather by the fire areas. Police were getting wise and using smaller more experienced squads to cut them off
