If people spread rumours about groups gathering in areas, the bone heads are likely to read them as well and may well head to areas that they wouldn't have bothered.

Clem, totally agree. The TV is now a kind of rioting/looting/mayhem porn, and those responsible will be getting a vicarious thrill from it all, and the rest of us getting more panicked. It certainly helped me to check out my local area for myself and see what's really happened. It's helped me find a balanced perspective.

Excellent reaction by councils n Croydon, local people were being signed up to help out with the clean up efforts at East Croydon railway station.
Croydon Council has drafted in extra resources to help clean-up areas, make businesses secure and help the community rebuild.
The council said it had already rehoused people whose homes were destroyed by fire or sealed off by the emergency services.
A spokeswoman for Hackney Council in north London said it had sent teams out "as soon as it was safe".
She added that the clean-up was "more or less finished".
In Enfield, roads closed after the riots reopened and the council's cabinet member for the environment praised street workers for their work which enabled the town to reopen for business.
"This shows we will not let these criminals beat us," he said. "We will not surrender our streets to these mindless morons."
Some, including former London mayor Ken Livingstone, suggested that the Tottenham riot was an unleashing of pent-up resentment over the weak economy, high unemployment rates and historically deep budget cuts that are decreasing government funding for poor communities and grass-roots charities. He blamed a sense that young Britons are facing "the bleakest future."

The economic crisis cannot become the sole explanation for the violent outbreaks that are multiplying in Europe. Each case is different, but taken together they are bolstering the view that representative democracy is incapable of dealing peacefully with the growing unrest among citizens. It is a slippery slope that governments have to deal with, while scrupulously obeying the rule of law.
That piece from El Pais is particularly interesting. For those not in the know, it's the 'left-wing' paper in Spain (the closest equivalent of the Grauniad). It seems to be suggesting that the rule of law itself is under threat and needs to be more strongly upheld (very strong words from a paper that has a vested interest in all things anti-fascist)

The trouble with this approach is that it didnt solve anything, just inflamed and prolonged the situation. (You may have noticed traumatic trials of the Army lads and commanders who conducted violent put downs of riots.) In the same way prison without trial (internment) in NI led to 20 more years of hatred and excuses for continued violence.
Just been to Bromley. The Argos past the top of the Glades has been smashed up and looted. Costa Coffee has broken windows as does the 'snappy snaps' photo store. I didn't venture any further up, but Primark, Topshop, McDonalds etc, all reported to have been looted/set alight, were perfectly fine. A TV crew had just arrived outside Argos, but I didn't recognise any of them.
The general air around the place though was depressed, saddened and slightly frightened. I have never been in a retail area so quiet. It felt like everyone was venturing out in the calm, before the storm arrives this evening. Police were out (not in huge numbers) speaking to shop-owners and some of the public. Security guards were also about the Glades, looking concerned, understandably.
I find it hard to imagine these events continuing for a 4th night, but then again, that is what I presumed about yesterday...
