I just dont understand, you see it all the time at football matches police using batons on hooligans why wont they use it against these mindless yobs!?
At football matches the police aren't outnumbered 50 to 1 though and your average match day hooligan just has his fists and isn't carrying rocks, bottles, knives, poles, shop signs, bits of wood etc.
Just watched a video of Nugent Centre, Orpington, a bloke laughing as lots of kids break into GAME and run away with playstations. he's laughing and shouting supermarket sweep and more and more people turn up to get in on the action.
I know the nugent centre has 24 hour security, but 2 men aren't going to be able to do a lot to stop it. What is more awful than the original trouble is the spreading of people thinking they can just get what they want.
100 football herberts not looting burning but punch up between emselves -Obill straight in batons out --horses in and 30 nicked. people get 2 years for afray etc etc ----------so why didnt they dish it out last night ?
I said to a mate in Woolwich if it happens again (they tried to break into his flat) then do the scum, who they going to bleat to ? dont threaten or wave anything just smash them with the heavy stuff---------one or two left lying on tyhe streets would be good.
How about finding a few and getting the Tar and Feathers out ? leave em tied to a lamp post on Blackheath with a sign " Looters beware" ---------------o yes sorry of course thats being a vigilante and some on CL think thats a no no.

I was thinking about that. I suppose, because football hooligans are frowned upon by all elements of the public and media, it's safer for the police to use force against them without fear of being criticised for being over zealous/unfair/victimising them etc. Obviously there are racial undercurrents to this rioting, (although pictures this morning show people of all colours and creeds getting involved) - the approach of the police so far seems to have been dictated by fear of criticism from the politically correct brigade. I suspect and hope that now the world has seen that the perpatrators of these riots are just criminals without a cause, they will be allowed to take a harder line against them. Too little too late though.

So then they will just continue to walk the streets is that what you are saying?Im sorry but you always hear all these stories of how some coppers are in the job just because they love giving people a hiding, where are these coppers now?
Floyd - are you telling me that the Government have no powers to invoke any emergency procedures, even if this escalates? If not, we may as well just give up. Bringing in some Police officers from sleepy hollows who have never seen a group more that 6 people before is not really the answer. The cells are now full in London, so what now - fixed penalty tickets for rioting? If this continues some one will be killed and I really hope this does not happen. By the way, I did not suggest that you drank herbal tea - merely your 'focus group at their crisis meeting'.
The police are maent to enforce the law, look after us. How would them doing that provide anarchy? Tim Goodwin wants the streets cleared so that "my police" can get on with their business. When did the police force become his? DC needed to provide decisive, comforting action. He failed.
Saw a couple of young coloured boys trying to nick stuff from an off licence near Peckham yesterday. I was stuck in traffic. They picked on the wrong shop. Surprised their not dead. I have never seen two youngsters take such a beating. We just sat and watched as they were kicked to pieces. Two more off the streets. ha ha
In "the old days" Obill didnt have shields, robbo cop armour, 3 foot batons, but they sure as hell steamed in and if you stood there you got hurt. Now they look like robots and act like it. Stand behind a shield let the scum throw stuff run 5 foot forward stop let the scum through stuff ---------zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz let them have it let Delroy and his possie bleed a bit in their yard, let there "home boys" get a few more gold teeth by knocking em out.
So Boy David i expect your "robust Policing" to mean nickings and heads split.
Just wanted to make the point it's not just blackbirds...
It's always Seagulls that take the blame, yet what about the actions of the thieving Magpie? Just because they're black and white at the same time no one dares to say anything - it PC gone mad I tell ya!
Right, easy to be scared. I think we have to be cool-headed, brave and realistic. We aren't helping ourselves by ranting so much.
These are the things I've discovered today:
Went to Lee Green Sainsbury's; a manager's wife who lives in Lee High Road rang the Sainsbury's about 7.15 last night because she saw a mob (one person said it was 200 but I suspect much less) heading towards Lee Green. Lee Green Sainsbury's immediately shut down and there was no break-in of any kind, though there was an attempt. Customers attempting to leave saw groups in the area between Sainsbury's and Wetherspoons and drove away via the backroads. I checked out the local damage; "Gold 'N' Bits" had its grill bent, the cheque-cashing place was boarded up and being swept, and there were boards on the Wetherspoons. It seemed that there was some broken glass from a champagne bottle on the ground near the bus stop outside Sainsbury's.
In Sainsbury's, staff were clearing the wine section and had cleared the CD/DVD section. They told me they were only clearing the expensive booze, and they also told me that Savacentre in Sydenham had been done, where the management had to barricade themselves in offices. The Sainsbury's in Charlton had been approached but they hadn't managed to do anything there.
Essentially, there have been a lot of windows broken and opportunist stealing whenever possible. Very locally in Lee has been nowhere near as bad as burning vehicles and buildings like we see elsewhere. Lots of people were out and about, boarding and sweeping and clearing up.
The video of the injured lad having his backpack stolen from, because it is so personal, is probably the most shocking single thing I've seen, and like AFKA I feel shocked that my beautiful city should be suffering this way.
My personal reaction is to try and get things in perspective, and attempt to deal with the problem. Unlike AFKA, I feel a certain degree of admiration for the Turkish community protecting Dalston. I take AFKA's point about protecting your home and family, but then again no man is an island, and all that. Decent people should stand together if necessary; the police force are in fact US in uniform and ironically, the looters are in fact US in hoodies.
Anyone who posts on here who supplies actual factual information is being very helpful, whether it is reports of damage, transport problems or ongoing violence/groups of people gathering (are hoodies really assembling in Eltham?).
It is time to be courageous in what is, let's face it, unprecedented circumstances for us. We have no blueprint to fall back on, but we must not allow our lives to be disrupted. On that note, I'm pissed off there's no football tonight - but understand why.
some of you will know this bloke's clothes shop in Blackheath as has good clothes (according to Ian). This poor guy who owns this shop has been through the mill as I think its the second time.

disgraceful
Speciesist.

There do seem to be a lot of mynah birds involved.
There are in my opinion a few reasons why the Old Bill haven't steamed in.
The fundamental one though is that the authorities will see this as a beneficial crisis and an excuse to remove freedoms.
Like Leroy says the Mean Streets of Witney and equivalent areas are safe so they don't really give a toss.

Sorry to hear that Clive, I hope you're O.K.
Everything is solved..........
