The WinViz thing that the BBC are fond of has England at 68% to win. I always feel it underestimates our ability to self-destruct, but the general conclusion seems sound that we're suddenly slight favourites despite the horrors of everything except the last hour or so.
The betting markets are somewhat different:

    Australia 1.81 (55%)
    England 2.56 (39%)
    Draw 16.0 (6%)
That seems far more realistic. Baffled how England could be at 68% when Australia haven't even batted yet.

Average first innings score in day/night games at this ground is less than 300, Aussie commentators were saying 350 would put England ahead of the game, if this game position was offered at the start of the day I think England would have taken it.

Very frustrating that Jacks and Brook got themselves going and then out to ludicrous shots.

Haven’t read the whole thread, so apologies if it has already been mentioned, but the over rate today was a disgrace. 16 overs lost! Cricket authorities really need to do something about it. Fines are pointless, hit them with run deductions and see how quickly they can get a field set then.
  • Could someone who knows a lot more about cricket than me please explain to me how they called stumps with only 74 overs bowled when it's a night game so they can't come off for bad light?

That's a piss poor over total for a full days play.

Root looks in good nick today. Praying for his century.
    Duly bookmarked.
And quite correct too. Please now post "Archer looks like he's going to rip through the Aussie top order."
No curse from me today was a great knock and reiterates Root being the best batsman in the world.

Can see Archer getting 50+ tomorrow. 😉

According to Matthew Hayden, Australia will lose Test championship for their over rate IF they don't bowl England out inside 80 overs.

Yes there has to be allowance for fast moving Bazball games, as clearly a game with loads of runs and wickets will have a slower over rate than a dull 225-2, but being 16 behind is unacceptable.

Was just going to say the same.

74 overs in a day is totally unacceptable given the price of tickets.

Something needs to e done. Just not sure what!

Quite a few recent England test matches have finished early.
The last test finished in 2 day's.
I reckon this test will last a fair bit longer and if Australia find themselves batting last on day 4 under lights that could be very interesting

Does the over rate come down significantly if there’s no spinners?

    Usually, yes
  • Given both sides have dodgy looking batting line-ups and some quality bowlers, I'll happily take this first innings score.
They've got 1, if only we'd play to see him off more....

Well talking numbers of overs.  At least England have outbatted their previous 2 innings or thereabouts.  They were both in the 30 somethings wasn't they?

If Root and Archer can frustrate them for even 20 mins in the morning that will be great!

The new pink ball it  tough to bat against whether or not its under lights. Hopefully nice early inroads and then get the rest quickly as the light fades in the afternoon.

Who’s due to face the first ball of the next over tomorrow ? Root or Archer ?

    Root

Archer looked very comfortable out there tonight, but having to start again will probably get out first ball tomorrow!

Hopefully Root will just take 2’s & 4’s and add another twenty to the score .

If we can bat for 80 overs, Aus will be fined for slow over rate….hang on in there boys…

So if we bat 6 overs tomorrow we cost the Aussies points in the test championship?

Six overs of blocking please, lads.

One negative taken from our reported innings on the news was the appearance of a fu*kin' spanners flag appearing like a bad smell just as Root and Archer walked off, was great until that moment...🤦‍♂️

    No doubt descendants of convicts.

Don't totally disagree with you although I think Boland's record in Oz probably qualifies him as decent. 54 wickets at 15

    Decent yes, 'quality' maybe not.

Lyon is quality too tbf but they've not picked him.

Doggett and Neser looked there for the taking today if more of the team (Brook, Jacks, Pope) had played Starc more sensibly.

Australia's problem is their other genuine pace options are made of glass just as much as the England seamers. Lance Morris and Jhye Richardson would probably have got a chance if they could have stayed fit. Am surprised Doggett is above Xavier Bartlett or even Nathan McAndrew.

Given our start, I’m taking 325 with one wicket remaining as a huge plus - sooo pleased for Joe Root - just hope he and Archer go steady early doors tmrw, get us to 350 - that’s a good score on this wicket / pink ball, first innings, in this Test Match - and let’s not forget, I would not want to bat last on this wicket, I reckon it will be a minefield for Aus …..

    Just my opinion mind

  • Absolute class innings by a class BATSMAN.And what a pleasure it was to witness it.Loved when he celebrated his ton.'Average Joe'...Stick that up your cocky arrogant smug arses.Special praise for Jofra aswell.Smacking Starc for a 6 was epic.

Hopefully get to 350+ plus today will be good.Root has to take the majority of the batting.Im sure he could muster up another 20 runs.

Looking forward to day 2.BARMY ARMY!!
