I looked at the last 2 Tests at the new Perth ground v India and Pakistan, and out of 75 wickets taken, only 8 were by spinners. A few of the AUS pundits that i have been watching have suggested that Lyon might not even be selected for this Test , however, due to Cummins and Hazlewood not playing, i would think thats now unlikely.
My thought along these lines was that maybe ENG might have considering playing Jacks instead of Carse (especially now that Stokes seems to have settled (potentially) into that 4th pace bowling option ) however, that also now seems unlikely.

Not long to go now !

I still don't understand why our best limited overs spinner doesn't play. Can he only spin a white ball  ??

Was surprised Tom Haines even went with the Lions given he was in very scratchy form for the second half of the Champ, he's also never a Bazballer.
Whereas McKinney is definitely a Bazballer.
I'd be surprised if McKinney doesn't debut within the next year or so. Seems like he's earmarked for a spot at the top of the order.

Call me a cynic (and there's absolutely nothing wrong with this because all home teams produce pitches to suit their bowlers) but there's nothing to stop Australia preparing a couple of wickets for the final couple of Tests that are certain to turn. They have a world class spinner in Lyon plus another two or three part-timers and could even accommodate another frontline spinner with two seamers plus Webster and Green. Whereas we'd be forced to use, at best, Bashir, Root and Jacks.
Bashir would be really dangerous on a turning pitch.

His weakness is on unhelpful pitches, where he can't tie batsmen down and stop the run scoring.

He hasn't played red ball for years. He has a far more lucrative career in white ball for England and various franchises without the same sort of strain on the body.

Bashir is still a rookie in every respect and has yet to prove that he has gained the experience to take wickets and retain some element of control too, even on a turning track.

    Bashir vs Lyon

    Red ball career: 87 wickets @ 48.72 & ER of 3.70 vs 855 wickets at 32.16 & ER of 2.93

    In Tests:

    1st innings - 17 wickets at 46.64 & ER of 3.55 vs 208 wickets at 32.51 & ER of 3.13
    2nd innings - 21 wickets at 33.71 & ER of 3.57 vs 346 wickets at 33.64 & ER of 2.87
    3rd innings - 18 wickets at 44.22 & ER of 4.22 vs 232 wickets at 26.75 with ER of 2.96
    4th innings - 12 wickets at 29.22 & ER of 3.92 vs 303 wickets at 27.11 with ER of 2.81

In Asia - 26 wickets at 38.96 & ER of 3.51 vs 154 wickets at 30.05 with ER of 2.99

With Rehan Ahmed ruled out with injury , that leaves the Lions with Tom Hartley who I don't understand why he's getting chances still and the ambidextrous spin of Ben Kellaway of Glamorgan. Wonder if they'll fly anyone else out.

I too was half expecting Jacks but not likely now. Slightly frustrating we don't have another spin option in the batters. Especially when you compare with Aus who have Marnus, Smith and Head.

If the Aussies were inclined to not play Lyon the could go with Starc, Boland, Doggett, Green and Webster. Assuming Green is fit to bowl. Stacks the batting plenty of bowling there and spin options amongst the batters.

Not many teams win when they've barely scraped 300 runs together in the match. Embarrassing to lose in those circumstances but, no doubt, the BCCI ICC will award the points to India due to the questionable nature of the pitch.

Simon Harmer proving again what a world class bowler he is though.

It's ridiculous that, at almost 37, he has just 13 Test matches to his name.

didnt he renounce his SA availability for some years in order to play in county cricket though?

Harmer only did that because he couldn't even get into the South Africa A team and started playing as a Kolpak in 2017 as he had to earn a living and you don't do that playing State cricket in SA. The end of Kolpak, as a result of Brexit, meant that he re-qualified to play for SA in 2020.

Betfair odds are out for 1st Test...
    Oz 1.85
    Eng 2.58
    Draw 15

Odds have shortened a bit since Hazlewood news.

IIRC his shoulder needs to be managed, which is why he can’t put in the overs a spinner needs to in red ball.

I hope he doesn't tbh. Give him a little longer and then use him in the 2nd test rather than tush him back and have him miss a chunk of the series. He's been out for ages and has barely bowled in his recovery. So I just think its better to play it safe when Jof and the rest are all fit and ready.

Personally think if he's fit then he has to play. Have to hit them hard from the start especially as pitch is likely to have 'Pace and Bounce' - also that we are likely to play Archer,Atkinson,Tongue AND Stokes to lighten the load. 4 over spells , he could end up only bowling 12 overs in an innings.

    Interesting interview with the 'curator'....

    Plus I think he's be better in the 2nd Test given it's a day/nighter.

I hope Carse plays. Can see him being a massively important player, he might not get bags of wickets but he won't get taken apart

I dont see the point in taking all this firepower over there and not using it from the off.
We need to win the first Test to stand any chance of winning the series, so lets just go for it, and worry about things out of our control later. If we dont play him and lose the first test then we are going to look pretty stupid if its deemed he was fit.
Day/Nighters tend to help the nibblers more than the pure quicks, one of the reasons Boland is so effective in D/N's - so imo Wood is going to be more threatening in Perth than Gabba.

I wouldn't play Wood because I would be concerned about the match fitness for someone that has bowled 8 overs in 9 months. If he is selected, though, then I would have Carse over Tongue. He is proven away from home (27 wickets @ 19.85 as opposed to 9 wickets at 60.88 at home) and is a much better batter than Tongue too.

Anyone found any good Ashes preview shows? On YouTube or TV? Keen to watch some buildup chat but can't find much that's good? Or a podcast?
