You do know that the 1st Test is in Perth, not Headingley?cantersaddick said:Lovely lovely. Thanks all. Train journey to and from Leeds tomorrow sorted.9 -
Middle Please, Umpire, the Mark Wood and Miles Jupp podcast, has an Ashes preview too which I plan on listening to tomorrow.1

Apparently Cummins has been bowling off full run up in the nets.0

I do but apparently my employer does not!killerandflash said:

I’d be very surprised if they risk him especially with a back injury . If he makes it worse in the first test , that’s him out of the series .MrOneLung said:Apparently Cummins has been bowling off full run up in the nets.0 -
That's how I feel about Mark Wood with his hamstring issue.Bedsaddick said:

Probably best for both to wait until the 2nd Test1 -
I still don't think he will be back till the 3rd. Just a hunch based on what some aussie media people said a couple weeks ago about him being behind where they wanted him to be. He may have caught up but he will need to get miles in the legs to be effective in tests.Bedsaddick said:

I've seen the clip and it's a real amble to the crease. Be very surprised to see him before Adelaide.MrOneLung said:Apparently Cummins has been bowling off full run up in the nets.0 -

Ricky Ponting and Stuart Broad picked their 21st century Ashes XI.
1. Hayden
2. Cook
3. Ponting
4. Root
5. Smith
6. Stokes
7. Gilchrist
8. Warne
9. Cummins
10. Broad
11. McGrath
They've left out a lot of very good players..!
Anderson, Vaughan, Pietersen, Strauss, Harmison, S. Jones, Lyon, Clarke, Lee, Starc, Hazlewood...1 -
Can't argue much with that, though I'd be tempted by Flintoff over Stokes just for the balance of the side - apart from McGrath there's a long tail anyway, whereas Flintoff adds more to the bowling.
Could also argue for Mitchell Johnson ahead of Cummins I guess.2 -
Anderson's record against Australia is surprisingly poor, so he's correctly been left out of a lot of these Ashes lists.0
-
Just shows how many great players both nations have produced. The thought of KP,Jimmy,Johnson,Lyon,Starc and Hazlewood playing for the B team is amazing.0
-
KP over Root in that team for me. Root has scored 270 more runs, but that is over an extra 15 innings.0
-
Arguably, that team has one too many fast medium right handed bowlers, and would be better balanced with either a quick like Harris or Lee, or a left armer like Starc or Johnson.1
-
Johnson for Cummins move Broady up to 80
-
I think Warne might have something to say about that as he had a better average, overall, than Broad anyway but the latter was never the same post being hit on the head.MarcusH26 said:Johnson for Cummins move Broady up to 8
In Broad's final five years of playing Test cricket, against Australia he had a top score of 16 in averaging 13.82. Warne's batting went completely the other way and in same period he averaged 34.50.0 -
That's fascinating stats wise. I didn't realise Broads average dipped that badly after he got hit.Addick Addict said:

Obviously Broad picked himself, same way he's never been out (joking aside, he's won matches on his own)1

Unusually for them England have named a 12 man squad, clearly unsure about Bashir vs an extra seamer
England 12-player squad:
Ben Stokes (c)
Jofra Archer
Gus Atkinson
Shoaib Bashir
Harry Brook
Brydon Carse
Zak Crawley
Ben Duckett
Ollie Pope
Joe Root
Jamie Smith (wk)
Mark Wood0 -
So Tongue was only in the starting XI for the warm up game because Carse was ill. If we do play Bashir and assuming Wood is deemed "match fit" then it's a shoot out between Atkinson and Carse for the final place.fenaddick said:Unusually for them England have named a 12 man squad, clearly unsure about Bashir vs an extra seamerEngland 12-player squad:

I very much doubt that Australia will want or need to leave out Lyon especially if they play both Green and Webster and the former is able to bowl.1 -
Someone who might have qualified for England in the same way as Chris Jordan and Jofra Archer did is Shai Hope. He went to St Bede's in Sussex for the latter part of this education and did consider staying here to do so.
Hope isn't a Test player but, at the age of 32, it is a credit to him that he has found a way to carry on playing for the West Indies when so many others have totally turned their back on them.
Today he hit the fastest ton by a West Indies batter (109* off just 69 balls against New Zealand with next top scorer 22) and has now scored a century against all the Test playing nations. He couldn't hide his post-match disappointment at the defeat and it must be soul destroying to so consistently be on the end of a defeat.0 -
His first Test tons since his 2 against England in 2017 when everyone thought he would be the "new Lara".Addick Addict said:Someone who might have qualified for England in the same way as Chris Jordan and Jofra Archer did is Shai Hope. Instead while he's been imperious in ODIs his Test career has been a big disappointment0 -
Butch was arguing that Tongue as a genuine specialist at getting through the tail should be in ahead of Carse as you have Atkinson and Archer with the new ball plus stokes. He was saying also pick Jacks to stack the batting and give root some spin support. He didn't think you needed 5 quicks as its unlikely to last the full 5 days.Addick Addict said:

5 quicks was always my favoured approach for the first test. They obviously think Wood is fit enough otherwise Tongue would be innthe squad. Bash to miss out.2 -
If Tongue isn't injured that's ridiculous to leave him out3

3-2 Aus
Highest run scorer: Harry Brook
Most wickets: Brendan Doggett
Will Root get a century? Yes
When will Cummins appear? 2nd Test
How many tests will Archer manage? 4
How many opening combos do Australia use? 21 -
Just added these to my spreadsheet. Poor @MarcusH26 and @golfaddick have Hazlewood as their leading wicket taker. Think some of the Cummins predictions will also be affected by that as Aus will be more likely to rush him backLeuth said:3-2 Aus

There's a lovely moment in the Final Word preview pod where Doggett and Boland start to take some photos with the Australian Aboriginal flag and the two hosts get a bit emotional seeing it. It's a big moment and one that I hope doesn't get lost1
