I think those who were wondering why Apter was being dropped for “a defender” are starting to see why.

Apter very very unfortunate to lose his place but Bree has been the best player in a Charlton shirt since he got it.

As I said in the match thread as soon as I saw him when he came on for his debut you could just tell he was going to be a great addition to the team and so far so good. Hopefully that continues and we get a chance to sign him properly.

Whatever the fee Southampton want for a guy with 6 months to run in Jan , pay it. Class act.
Would make my week to read “Charlton have agreed a fee with Southampton to make James Bree’s move permanent in January”

Think Apter is an absolutely cracking player that's going to have a big role to play but there's an assurance and quality about Bree. Just makes it look easy.

Can't we just make it permanent now and save the wait?

We'd better do it sooner rather than later, as the fee to avoid trying to sign him on a Free next summer, is probably going upwards at the moment. At this rate, they'll refuse any deal, and recall him, simply to try and hurt a rival
  • Really good player.  I was laughing before the game about people saying it was too defensive at home to play him ahead of Apter.

In back to back appearances over the last 8 days, he has contributed to 3 of the four goals we’ve scored, a goal and two assists. You can see the lad has played at a higher level and has a very good delivery, whether from set pieces or open play, sign him up in January, he’ll do for me.

    Greatest loan signing since Costa?
I assumed this was tongue in cheek but it's had a few likes. Carson, Gallagher, Cullen. Not yet...

Made a fabulous start to his Charlton career. It would be great to make his loan permanent.

Is there a calmer player when receiving the ball? He just doesn’t seem phased when he get the ball in any situation. A must for a full contract at Charlton

Shame we couldn’t get the permanent deal done like NJ wanted before he came here, if he keeps this up and Southampton continue to struggle, you would imagine that he won’t be here after the end of the 3 months.

If we get him on a perm then we really are cooking on gas.

He’s out of contract at the end of the season so Southampton will want to sell him in January. I’d assume he will want to come here so we should be in a strong position

Probably the most "complete" FB/WB option we have at the moment. He's not as tricky as Apter and not quite the physical specimen Edwards is (injury notwithstanding) and not as quick/athletic as Ramsay (albeit he normally plays RCB) but he is quick enough, strong enough, tricky enough that you can't honestly say there is any obvious weakness in his game.

He's also just not very popular over there. He was a Jones signing and a lot of Saints fans really, really hate Jones and despite not really doing anything wrong Bree's still associated with him. Hopefully that can work to our advantage

I wonder if we agreed a deal with Southampton for his purchase during the loan negotiations?
if we did then we can convert him to permanent outside the window should we wish

His contract expires in June so it wasn't a loan with a view to him returning to Saints. It was a last minute thing clearly and if it goes as well as it is looking like it is going, the player will want to stay and the fee will be reflective of how long there is on his contract.

Insane stat given the minutes he’s had.

  • Good all round player, but his composure in the final third is really noticeable. Exactly what team was missing (along with the decent set pieces)

Said it on the match thread but I really like that he can vary his set piece delivery, sometimes he floats them, he drilled one to the back of the box yesterday and he can whip them in too. Makes it 10x harder to defend
  • With the likes of Macca, Jones, Tanto and Leaburn in the team, his delivery of free kicks and corners becomes a real weapon.

I think we should add Song, Bielek and Coquelin
