The game pivoted on two bad refereeing decisions.

The foul on TC prior to their goal not given, and the failure to give a 2nd yellow for the foul on Kelman (or was it Knibbs?).

A different ref, a different result. We could have won it on momentum.
I’m not sure it was a foul on TC. The ref wasn’t giving those all game.

What TC needed to do was fall on the ball so that if the ref didn’t give the foul, we wouldn’t have been caught out. Even if he gives the foul the other way for TC handling the ball, at least we can organise and defend the free kick
There were many choices he could have made such as spun his man and tried to get up the pitch or once he went down after trying to shield the ball he could have brought the player down. Unfortunately the one thing he couldn’t do was crumble to the floor and let the bloke run off with the ball towards our goal
Correct Andy, as soon as we lose that challenge then we are in big trouble. If you watch it again, Tyreece has time to move away with the ball but decides to shield it, not a skill he's blessed in, and gets robbed far too easily. He is still learning in the position he's being asked to play in and last season he created room for Godden by his runs, Miles isn't the same type of player as Matt Godden but I still think both Miles and Tyreece are not receiving the best of service.
  • I've been supporting Charlton since I was ten.
Tthat's 60 years of watching us.
Today feels very disappointing I must admit.
But I'm going to say it now.
We will against all logic and reasoning beat the spanners and then this forum will become a thing of beauty.

    I'm always right.

    Well sometimes anyway.
Personally, I can't see it happening, but have to admit I was thinking last night that if it was a choice between getting a result against QPR or Millwall, I wouldn't mind us losing yesterday.

My device was too wet to be plugged in and I had to wait for it to dry out. Looking forward to next vlogs technical issue.

I wondered why my boy kept gauping at the folk in the row behind and left of us throughout the game, but I thought nothing of it at the time. On the train home, without any prompting and with some certainty, he said the 'video guy' was behind us. Have no idea how I missed you @Braziliance. Good vlog, as always.

TC was in the opposition half. There should have been 2 defensive midfielders and 3 centre backs behind him to deal with the situation.

Coventry picked up an unnecessary yellow in the first half. Without that I suspect he would have pulled their player down to stop the move. In a way, that yellow is as much to blame as TC for the goal...
His yellow in the first half was for exactly the same thing you said he should’ve done to prevent the QPR goal. Why is it unnecessary on the first occasion but not the second?

With the 1st half incident, there were covering defenders between the player and the goal, and the attacker wasn't racing clear.

Yeah that first one was silly. We had 4 defenders I think vs 1 attacker, no need to bring him down

"The video guy" been called that a few times now 😂

Cheers mate, if I see you next time I'll say hello

Yeah......and according to NJ it was the ref's fault we lost last week to Leicester as well.

Really we should have 10 points & be sitting in 2nd place 🤷‍♂️

  • Some of the comments from the end of the match thread are brilliant. It really wasn’t dogshit or horrendous.

We lost 3-1 in the championship. The 3rd goal was as we pushed in the final stages - always a risk.

we clearly need some attention focussed on attacking threat but if Leaburn hits that under the bar in the first half it’s a different game.

We’ll lose a lot more this season, but we’ll win some as well.

Some balance and perspective will definitely help some cope with a Saturday afternoons football.
    A sensible post at last.

I’ve seen three games in the flesh and today on TV. We should have won the first three and you could make a case for a point today. We weren’t great today but far from comments like dogshit.

At the beginning of the season most said they’d be happy if we just stayed up this season. I have no doubt we will. Yes we need to score goals but they will come. People seem to have forgotten that 7 of today’s starting 11 had never played Championship football before this season so are still learning. The bench had 5 or 6 who have no Championship experience, maybe more? We need more Championship experience but that costs. We have recruited well but have recruited the best from League One with a smattering of experience in Bell, Burke, Kaminski.

It’s not going to be pretty this season but we need to keep faith in NJ and the team. Stay up this season, improve for the season after. Some of the criticism today is over the top. We are no longer in League One, we have left primary school and joined big school. It will take time to adjust and improve.
It’s easy to say that now but a month ago before the season started you said that you expected a finish between 10th and 16th.

When others predicted what you now say in bold above, you said that you couldn’t understand the negativity.
And what’s your point? I haven’t changed my opinion.

Okay 4 points from 4 games...no issue....but Nathan has to surely understand thar the midfield is not right. Is Knibbs or Costello the answer? Who knows...they've had zero minutes in 4 league games.

As for Kelman I've re-watched his goals from last season and he's had literally no service like then. So, either Nathan wants to change his whole game or, he now realises that the current midfielders playing cannot give him what he needs.

In my opinion Nathan must realise that he needs to seriously think of changing the formation and personnel.

I hope/expect some changes against the Wall and would like to see Tanto, Kelman, Costello and Knibbs play more minutes than they've had and then give it a few games to see if things can get better.....
If that doesn't work then we can panic.

We knew this wasn't going to be easy just look how many teams got promoted then relegated the next year. Let's keep the faith and stop the nitpicking/slating of players please it's not needed after just 4 flipping games.
I think the point about service to Kelman is a valid one, and agree with Braziliance further up that without Donley and Galbraith-type players behind and around, then our other midfield players, and he himself, will have to adapt, and that's likely to be a long term issue, unless we sign some magical player(s) in the next 24 hours or so. I would of thought we have enough with Carey, Apter, and TC (professional footballers lets be clear) who should be able to find a pass. Yet some, very limited, evidence to date suggests they might not have it in them! Too early to be sure, imo.

It's very hard to change a team's way of playing to adapt to one player. Besides, I'm not sure NJ teams have ever been the sort of passing side that Kelman at Orient thrived in...
That would worry me, as he's used our largest transfer fee, and he can't fit into the way we play. I personally feel the likes of Knibbs, Carey, Apter and Costello are better at passing on the floor and will give him the through balls he thrives on. Once they're all up to speed, I think we'll see the goals, so I'm going for 4-0 again Millwall

  • After international break there will be no excuse to say players aren’t up to match fitness. Need to have our best 11 starting and all need to show that they can last 90mins if needed.

After international break there will be no excuse to say players aren’t up to match fitness. Need to have our best 11 starting and all need to show that they can last 90mins if needed.

Apart from Bell, Campbell and Anderson, who'll be flying half way around the world, possibly playing two matches.

Its also madness to expect all eleven players picked to start, to show they can last 90mins. What are you trying to do, injure them? - Because the intensity of the press that we opt for now, that's why you have substitutes!!

But they don’t need to last 90 minutes.  All teams in the championship now leverage subs in a way there are starters and finishers.  Look at Saito who came on second half.  Best player on the pitch Saturday in either half.

enjoyed your blog from optomistic free flowing haired Braziliance entering London to the rather disappointed hair in a bun leaving Loftus Rd, maybe on way home on the coach you had time to reflect on our display at QPR. • I have recollections of a story I heard Paul Mortimer tell (can't remember where maybe a fan/player meeting). It's relevant as to the criticsm that TC has been getting. Story was ...It was prior to an important game and Alan Curbishley was saying to Paul- do your skilled stuff but don't lose the ball- PM came back with -something along the lines- that what he does is risky -can win games but also risks losing the ball.
So part of the package of the  players with more pace/skill/etc is that it won't work all the time, only occasionally.Thats the deal. It's frustrating as fans, especially when we see what he can do when it all works.

If you predict finishing in the middle third of the league in the expectations thread, then that’s your expectation and what you’d be happy with, isn’t it?

Now you’re saying that you’ll be happy just staying up.

That’s a change of opinion. You’ve now changed to what you had previously labelled as ’negative’ by other posters (incidentally not ’most’ posters.)

Looking at the table and seeing we have more points then Ipswich and sheff utd is a comfort.

We’re 4 games in and have 4 points already just need another 40 and the season will be a success I think

3-1 flattered them but we tried going for it just wasn’t good enough. I do fear how we will fair against a lot better opposition.
I can understand the logic, but I don't like seeing sides like that below us as it feels a bit false. It is inevitable that they will finish above us/go above us eventually, whether that's cause of a manager change or something clicks.

Good to see sides like Hull, Oxford and Sheffield Wednesday really struggling those as that is our competition ultimately, I would be a lot more concerned if they were showing signs of life.
Do agree but Sheffield United is very toxic, if they lose Hamer on loan (linked away at the moment), then that’s their best player gone. Get the new manager appointment wrong and they could be this seasons Luton where you look at the squad and can’t believe they are down there

Hull, Oxford and Sheff Wed were my 3 to go down before the season. Happy that they all look like they are struggling
Mate of mine is a Blade and he pretty much agrees with your point that at the moment they’re a basket case and are so disjointed it’s scary. He does however think it’ll eventually click which is hard to disagree with.

Like you and a few others say, we need to keep an eye on our ‘mini league’ who fortunately have all had mixed starts too
But aren’t they reduced to playing youngsters? Their squad is very thin isn’t it?

No doubt you're aware of this line, they can be very good on advance purchase fares, they also stop at Stratford so would hope that is advantageous to you.  A problem is that they are prone to a rail replacement service.
You might save enough dough to get your barnet done into the bargain :)  Keep up the blogging, it's good stuff.

  • Glad @fenaddick posted that screen shot, shows what i thought at the time, we got a bit over excited during a period where we had some sustained pressure and caught in transition.

Still thought Saito was best player on the park when he came on, not much to choose between the teams otherwise, we're a bit naive but not awful.   Was sat with QPR friends and all were complimentary afterwards that the score flattered them and they thought that they were clinging on at the time of the second goal dropping deeper and deeper and giving the ball away.

Did they give you guys free beer in the away end as the card terminals all died like the home areas?

Looked Prem level tbh, might just have been that he's further along in pre-season but had that busy, technical Japanese player look to him.

they did indeed give a out a free beer and pie in the away end. Not much consolation when you've already bought 7 from the bar outside the concourse..
