POST-MATCH THREAD: Blackpool V Charlton Athletic: Saturday 1st February 2025 : KO 15:00

Through the first half both teams largely cancelled themselves out, with Charlton perhaps the happier of the two and looking a little more composed. It was in the second half that the game came to life.

Just after the break, Charlton scored through Matty Godden and then scored again some three minutes later through good work from Tyreece Campbell down the left. Campbell played the ball through across the goal line and it was turned in by the Blackpool defender. Blackpool, at that point, looked out of ideas. Charlton had multiple chances to extend their lead but, unfortunately for the Addicks, things then turned for the worse. Godden and Campbell were replaced and Blackpool began to awaken.

On 74 minutes, poor defending lead to Silvera curling the ball in past Maynard-Brewer to bring them a goal back. Then, after a long clearance, Gillesphey’s poor touch put the Blackpool forward in on goal. His strike struck the crossbar but the rebound fell kindly to substitute Nigel Ennis, who tucked the ball past the Charlton keeper to level the score.

The Charlton substitutes changed the game for the worse, coming a bit early in my opinion, allowing Blackpool to pick themselves up and build a little momentum. A gut punch to concede two from being two up and two points thrown away. We should have seen this one out with all three points but things just fell apart in the final twenty minutes.

Please please please try and be positive lads. Yes it’s disappointing but a point on the road keeps us on track and we haven’t suddenly become shit.

2-2 was still a good result and would have taken that before we started, but really stupid stuff not trying to run down the clock better when we were 2-1 up, still believe top 6 is a realistic spot for us.

I haven't watched the game, so take my opinion with a massive pinch of salt. But 2-0 up away from home is not the time to bring Aneke on. What on earth does he add in that situation?!

I thought Chuks getting booked so soon after coming in sadly made him a little less effective than last few games.

On balance it was the fair result I think as we were not as good as we can be.

Disappointed not to have won after being 2 nil up.
But a few short weeks ago we were 14th in the league with seemingly nothing to play for.
We are now 7th in the league with two home games coming up.
Now is the time for our owners to bring in one or two players who can get us over the line.
It would be a big mistake not to strengthen and just mis out.

More than happy with result upfront but frustrating in the end.

But the signs are positive … I still believe playoffs are very achievable.

Completely agree that the subs cost us the game. Wasn't any need to change things at that point and we weren't the same threat thereafter.

Still, it's a point away and our form has been good enough to get us into the Play Off scrap, which I think most would have taken a few weeks back.

Can normally hold the ball up in their half and so some general shithousing and time wasting. Unfortunately he seems to eager to try and score himself and has lost some composure

a point is a point, but oh what could have been!

Unfortunately this season has been consistently mired by individual errors, poor substitutions and a weak bench.
Bringing Chuks and Kanu on shows how weak the game plan was at the end of the game as well as how poor the bench is- really lacking a game changer but also someone who will come on and win the ball back/waste some time!

As soon as TC comes off, we lose the width and we end up playing narrow and long balls to Aneke - it is inevitable that the ball wont stick up top and is just going to come back at us...

Poor substitutions. We were playing well as a team then he brings on Aneke and we start playing long balls up to him and he's not even very good in the air. The second Blackpool goal starts with such a long ball that Aneke misses and two passes later the ball is in the back of the net because of a misjudgement by Gillesphey. Aneke, Kanu and Anderson were not as good as the players they replaced whereas the Blackpool substitutions changed the game.

Bloody annoying to drop points when 2 up, particularly against the scummy Blackpool cheats who I cannot forgive for their abomination of anti football at The Valley this season.

Sounds like we played ok, substitutions a bit early and we end up 7th, level on points with 6 and all to play for.

We are in a position to challenge this season for the first time and it is clear to every fan we needed a better CAM than Berry, a better LCB than Gillesphy and better backup on the wings. Yet we are a month into the window and have bought in no one. Can't help but be a bit miffed at that.

We had the chance to do to them what they did to us at the Valley, and it's a shame we didn't take every opportunity to kill the clock and strangle the game. However, after three wins on the trot, if you must have an annoying result to give the team a bit focus, I'd rather have this than a Rotherham.

Yes, the fact we were two up makes it feel like two points dropped but I think Blackpool are a good side, especially offensively so a point will do for me and it actually improves our position with two home games coming up.

Closer to the playoffs than before the match, and a result I'd have taken at 3pm. Disappointing manor to draw in but you'd hope it keeps the hunger alive! Now to level out that potentially overly-positive view - Aneke really isn't the man anymore when we're looking for impact off the bench.

As for Macauley, him giving goals away like that is the side effect of having a centre back in his mould at this level, you're going to get the lovely passes but there's a reason he's playing in League One. Would we be better with a more steady option? Yes in my opinion, but I don't think it's worth jumping on his back.

There's hardly anyone who wouldn't have taken a point today, the order of service just was very demoralising. The fact is though we're still playing well, it doesn't feel like the results are a temporary turnaround now and that's a very positive thing. I think the thing most of us were concerned about is that little run around Christmas was a good blip but it's 1 loss in 11 now and 6 wins. We've got some tough games coming up and it would have been nice to show that we can beat the stronger teams but it wasn't to be. Today was individual errors and unfortunately those happen in football.

We're now one of 4 teams on 44 points scrapping over that 6th place spot and there were plenty of people who were certain our season was over in November. All in all things look ok

Should have seen them off earlier. Impact subs today but not the impact we wanted. Hindsight is a great thing. Still a good point. Joint sixth and the performance was good. I was more disappointed in how they scored their first goal than the second. Still had chances to win it. Onward and upwards. Looking good for the run in. All to play for.

Would have been top 6 had we hung on. Not sure Kanu and Chucks was a good idea. Game management and shutting up shop was the order of the day. Expected a defeat so all ends up, not a bad result but we really do need to close matches out

Thought we was the better team, looked better in possesion and even though we didn't do much first half always felt confident we would win. We go 2 up then he brings on Chucks instead of Leaburn with half hour to go which was just mental. Bring him on if we need a goal/battering ram but not when we need to hold onto what he had. When winning its like having 10 men with Chucks on the pitch, he doesnt run/close down because he can't. Either Leaburn is off or him and Jones have had a falling out as Jones went mental at him after the game for messing up the last attack, but he had only been on for a minute. Also however much Gillesphie has improved over the last few games he is such a liabillity and his stupid mistake got punished, what was he thinking trying to bring it under there, absolutey mental.

We better sign some wingers and attacking midfielders or it will all go pete tong.

Football is a strange game.

Strolling it at 2-0 until Blackpool score a goal out of no-where. And then hanging on desperately at the end for a point.

But what a last 10 minutes! End to end stuff that was real edge of the seat. Either team could have won and what a chance we had right at the very death which Leaburn managed to muck up. No wonder both teams were absolutely exhausted at the end.

Gillesphey had had a really good game for most of the match. I even commented on it in the match thread. Then an awful mistake gifts them a goal. Sums up the mad afternoon really!

Would have taken the point before the game, but going 2 up and not getting the 3 points now just feels a kicker.

Thought we struggled against their RB Offiah who was brilliant and thought they looked good going forward which we didn’t handle as well as we usually do.

Also feel they largely nullified our forward play and we struggled there.

Thought Aneke has looked poor last couple of games, easy to say in hindsight but feel like we should have brought Leaburn + Kanu on instead when the change was made.

think this is the most gutting/disappointing part of todays result - it really has made it look like we will just be scrapping for one place, where as we could have been hunting Huddersfield and Stockport down, especially with the game in hand!

Gave it a real good go so no complaints from me. There is a growing confidence and some great skill on show at times, especially from Small. Starting to look forward to the next game which an unusual feeling. Knowing who it is against will come.

I think Blackpool will be most dispointed with dropping two points. They have much more catching up to do.
