January Transfer Window (rumours + actuals)

  • To me League One is non league. And we have been stuck here for what, five seasons. It’s a fecking disgrace.
My son pointed out last night, whilst we were watching yet another reply on Sky of the play off final win from 2019, that Sunderland are now top 6 in the Championship. How fortunes have changed on those 5 and a half years.
  • “Losing Jones would be bad” is not the same as “rather than making signings we’re worrying about losing our players, we’re going nowhere fast”.

The first would be reasonable, the second is full of negative sentiment making predictions about a transfer window that we’re not even 25% of the way through.
Once again there is no evidence at all that Jones is going in fact the opposite, contact talks are taking place ,Jones will be here after the window shuts , apart from the players Jones wants out unless we get offered ridiculous money for any of our players ( talking millions ) there will be no surprise sales , we don’t need to sell .
  • We’re a week in and haven’t sold anyone yet…🙌
  • It's now official.
    Jones is off.
    I think not.
    Time will tell of course.

  • Not enough rumours for my liking 😒
  • So... catching up over the last 6 pages, for anyone else like me here is the summary:

People be angry at Callum for suggesting that you can pick up good players on free transfers, we need to spend millions or get relegated, the SMT are riding an unprofitable gravy train by being paid a wage and Lloyd Jones and Leaburn have been sold and not replaced (soon, maybe).
You forgot....but everything is fine, nobody is being sold everything and we have the best structure ever.
  • Think we've just generally had less rumours the last few years. Don't know if that was because Gallen was sidelined before leaving or because we're such a L1 staple we aren't an attractive name for an agent to throw out there anymore. The end product is this thread just becomes debate after debate

There have been some shit transfer rumours threads but this one tops the lot.
Oi, this is a rumours thread. Keep facts off of it please.
  • There is an argument to say that lack of leaks shows professionalism or as it was put to me a lack of leaks would show  "cohesion internally."

Which i guess is a polite why of telling me to mind my own business/when it's on the OS.

So are the club playing their cards close to their chest or are there just no cards to show?

We don't know but people will decide which it is based on their level of cynicism and/or impatience.

It is the nature of the 24 hour news cycle and social media that some expect and demand not just transfers but rumours of transfers.

We could all just wait and see but that isn't enough for some.

Probably 6 of one and half a dozen of the other. But as you say there is rarely space for a shade of grey on social media and I think dedicated forums are probably worse for it

  • I think if they sell Jones and Leaburn (not sure if this is true or just rumours from here) a lot if not the majority of fans will lose a lot of faith in the ownership.

Them two are exactly the sort of characters you need to build a squad around, throw 2/3 more quality players in that squad then you've got a team which will challenge the top, lose them and we are back to square one if not worse.

We are on the right direction, if we keep them.

Sadly, I think the SMT know exactly what they doing. Hang in on the gravy train for as long as possible, and not really that bothered if the achieve the result of promotion as it’s always someone else fault.

They will keep doing it until someone forces them out.
surely it makes little to no sense as business owners to buy a business in the football industry spend the money that they do and not try take over competitors. It is clear that SMT do spend money just not quite enough and in the right way YET.

They can’t make any money without getting out of this league so why on earth would they not be bothered about promotion?
  • Remember, Steve Gallen once said, 'All the best Transfers, come at the end of the transfer window'  :D

I don't want to be sitting here on deadline day whilst we sign some random Luton fringe player on loan at 11pm ,😆

The SMT are paid a wage to be employed.   Our owners (the money men) aren't paid, they just put the money in, so the longer the SMT remain in gainful employment, they won't need to look for another job - which they won't get in football - unless another mug punter employs them to mess things up.

Sorry, but Charlie Methven couldn't get Sunderland promoted from League 1 when they were spending lots and lots and lots AND had parachute payments still coming in!    Look at Sunderland now - flourishing since he left.   He'll tell you he sowed the seeds - fans and others will tell you (as will the Netflix series) - that he's an incompetent fool - when it comes to running a football club!
  • Wasn't there a rumour in the summer that we were supposed to be signing a foreign midfielder in this window? Can't remember the name or from which club.

More of a suggestion we “…should…” sign rather than we are actually interested. Still, a bit of a rumour…

  • For me selling your best players, especially midway through the season, only makes sense if you can sign a number of players that improve more than one position. I doubt the money we'd get for Jones would enable this, so I only see downside in selling Jones now.
