I like a lot of your posts @callumcafc but this isn’t one of them. We’ve proven ourselves less than competent in the transfer market and even some of the better looking signings have not worked out. Lloyd has, apparently, some of the best stats in the division although I prefer to judge him on his value to the team and that seems very obvious given how we performed with and without him.

A replacement for someone who adds so much to the team needs to be more than adequate and any new signing is a huge risk and, as said, we have called tails way too many times when it fell on heads.

The same goes for Dobbo and May. One forced out by Scott and, having spoken briefly to him last season after Wycombe, the other seemingly left with little option but to go because of NJ’s view of him. Two players who’d found a home here and who dragged the rest of their teammates along with them. We rightly cut a lot of deadwood in the summer, but we also lost two players who should have been retained. Adequate replacements have, so far, been glaring by their absence.

I’m not totally pessimistic. Docherty is finally starting to play as I’d hoped/expected a decent Championship midfielder would. Josh has proved a good signing (as well as Ramsey and Small seems to be getting his mojo back too). But Gas, A Campbell, Potts, Hylton have been, politely, underwhelming and Berry & Godden have shown way too little.

Having talent available is easy to say, but having a player or players who just fit and obviously make the team better than the sum of their parts is just so much more difficult to replace.
Praise the lord, I thought it might be me.
  • I’ve been scrolling through this thread for about an 20 mins now and haven’t seen anything but the rumour of jones leaving.
Is there still actually 0 rumours of us signing anyone?

I think the key will be departures. We want a smaller squad. There will be several out before ins imho.
  • My feeling is that the owners are still relying on the SMT to get things right. Could it be that CM sold that it was easy to get success if you were smart. We know you can’t. It’s more complicated than that. It will only go on so long though before the owners realise they were sold something that was unachievable. What then. ? New SMT or new owners ?
Good post! I believe it won’t be too long until we get some answers.

Putting it bluntly, we are crap at recruitment &  disposals/sales as we proved last summer and many previous windows. We will probably sell TT, Jones. Leaburn and Kanu and then scramble around in the last few days of the window to pick up the leftovers.

Whoever thought that signing Ahadme, Hilton, A Campbell was a sensible decision?

NJ is only part of the problem as he must have approved all the ex Luton players that are clearly past their best.

We cannot get anywhere promotion with the current leadership and that alone will ensure that no decent players will want to come to us.

Needs a massive clear out and hopefully a better leadership team that will support better recruitment.

They may prove me wrong by doing it right this time!

  • When is Terry Taylor going to like an actual new signing for someone?
    February 1st...🙄

This has been proven wrong time and time again. I'm not saying we can't go out there and find a gem that is better than Lloyd Jones, but we most likely won't. Even if we do, they're not ten a penny - it will cost more than it would to retain Lloyd Jones.
How did we manage to get the actual, real Lloyd Jones on a free if so?

George Dobson’s last two transfers between clubs were also on free transfers. Sunderland to us to Wrexham.

So probably did Millwall in December 1995!

If Southampton was an animal, they would have put them out of their misery by now...🤦‍♂️

I'd struggle to name all the signings under ESI 1 probably - Andre Green,Matt Smith (Man City), David Davis and Aidan McGeady???? Was Leko in there????

Think this summer has definitely had some good signings but it's tempered by the disappointments.
The only good thing about David Davis was his refusal to play gave us a chance of staying up. Found his level now in non league.

  • I of course have no idea and am probably wrong but you give off all the vibes of a newish supporter. Those that have been held captive for a long time threw our rose tinted specs away long ago.

I always thought Fraeye was a decent manager and should have been given time.
  • I'm not sure if you're losing the plot or are starting to a be a WUM?
I used to take your posts seriously.
But I now think you're willing to "die on your hill" since insisting it was the right thing to do to get rid of Alfie May.

This has now extended to the league table is irrelevent in January and getting rid of your best players is the right policy, because replacements are ten a penny.

I think you're starting to challenge Ronnie Moore's posts.

Apologies, but that's what I honestly think and I'm not meaning to be provocative or rude.
    I'm simply being honest.

I have been of that opinion for a while.
  • I never said we should adopt a strategy of getting rid of our best players. By the same token, we should understand we are a third tier team with third tier players, many of whom were acquired on free transfers and have become cornerstone pieces.

You don’t have to splash the cash to build a good team at this level, which is the bottom line of the point I was attempting to put across.

    Lloyd Jones = free transfer

    George Dobson = free transfer

    Corey Blackett-Taylor = free transfer

    Greg Docherty = free transfer
None of them.have been promoted out of this league.   Ipswich may well.stay up in the Premier League this year.

Speculate to accumulate and hire a damn good coach.

My apologies.  CBT don't count he played about 5 games for Derby.   Doherty yes.

I stand by the fact that very very infrequently and more infrequently now, do League 1 sides get promoted without spending serous money.
