After much deliberation and taking note of the comments on this thread I’ve decided that when I change my car in the spring I’m going to go for a petrol / hybrid. I’d expect it to be the last ICE car I purchase so will watch with great interest what happens over the next four years.
Petrol hybrid cars are a great way of combining the worst of both worlds. It's a bit like the Rickey Gervais line when he talks about being English, but with French ancestry (from his surname). He says, "I am shit in bed, but at least my breath stinks of garlic".
I agree - a 5.0l V8 supercharged petrol engine is the way to go.
The notion of swapping the batteries seems to be a good idea. I would think that most people can’t charge an electric vehicle at home due to not having a ‘drive’.
70% of households have the capability of EV charging "on-plot" according to a government report.

Had my Hyundai IONIQ 6 for about a month now. Am fortunate to have a drive and had an Ohme charger installed (part of the Hyundai deal). So easy to just plug it in and Ohme/Octopus sort out the optimum cheap rate to change overnight - the Intelligent Octopus rate is 7p per Kwh. Meant last night the car went from 45% to 93% charge giving me a total range of 230 miles for the princely sum of £3.10! Most of my driving is local and in traffic which makes the car very efficient. Love how quiet and smooth it is and if I switch into sport mode the acceleration is breathtaking. Like many I was worried about range anxiety but I don;'t think its an issue unless you are going on a road trip and even then the car helps you create a trip plan with charge points identified.

Discovered last week that my Uni does a salary sacrifice lease scheme for EVs.
Used the calculator and was surprised how good the deals seemed, given they included road tax, insurance and full maintenance (even including new tyres)
Cupra Born was coming out at £320pm. Kia EV6 was coming out at £600pm.
Thats hugely tempting to take as a second car when we need one. The second car would only be doing local miles.

I really want to get a VW ID Buzz Cargo but I am too stupid to figure out how to get a good deal. I understand the concept of salary sacrifice but no idea how to make it work. I struggle to figure out how to pay myself properly as it is!

We were in exactly the same position at the start of this year. My wife and I thought the scheme was worth it and started looking at the likes of the Cupra Born and the Renault Megane as it was just going to be our second car for running around town. Ended up going for the bigger EV6, and 8 months later our petrol car barely gets used. Even on long journey's…just a tiny bit of planning ahead and the range anxiety is a non issue.
Biggest challenge was positioning of the home charger, but got sorted in the end. Everything else, from overnight charging on lower tariffs, to after sales customer service, totally slick.
For what it’s worth, my advice is jump on the scheme and jump on the EV6.

*I'll get me coat.
Ferrari SF90 or 296!! Had a drive in the latter a few weeks back, managed about 15 miles on electric.
Been potentially offered a Vauxhall Grandland electric by work. Reason it appealed initially is because it has capacity for 425 miles on a full charge.

SF90 a proper V8 beast and similar range.
The SF90 has been discontinued apart from a limited run XX, but they are all sold! A mate of mine has the 296 and although it's an astonishing car I just can't get my head around a V6 modern Ferrari! (I'll take a 60s Dino though).

We‘ve had a Toyota RAV4 peh for just over 5 years now and we‘re really, really happy with it. It‘s comfortable, does all we want of it (including being able to tow our trailer with up to 750kg) and has an overall consumption of 5.1l/100km (55.4mpg). Despite a 2.5.l petrol engine she uses about 1.5 litres less per 100km than the 2.0l diesel I had before.
Reading this thread as a bit of an outsider , it does seem that car users don't seem to get it!
ICEs should be illegal in the same way pouring shit into water that is likely to be drunk or swam in should be illegal.
Consulting with people and companies that do these things is rather pointless. They will obviously have no "appetite for change" and prefer that it were legal.
Obviously, a bit of warning is reasonable to give manufacturers and users a chance to switch over but if they refuse or can't do it that's tough.
If the government could genuinely just say that the sale of new ICEs will be illegal from 2030, things would start changing fucking quickly!
Petrol stations would start removing pumps and offering competitively priced fast recharging instead.
Houses without installed charging points would begin to fall.
Prices of ICEs would initially rise but then fall as people worried about where to fill them on shorter journeys.
None of this will happen while governments keep kicking the can down the road and nobody actually believes any thing they say!
And just for clarity, I don't really care that much about the climate. I think nuclear war is much more a threat than the effects from global warming but I'm seventy years old so I don't really give a fuck anyway.
I buy and drive ICE's and will continue to do so until they become too expensive or illegal.
It's not just cars, hundreds of thousands of the population have ice garden equipment, I have some battery stuff but it don't last long.
A what? WTF is an ice garden?
ice = I.C.E. = Internal Combustion Engine It could perhaps have been expressed a touch more clearly, I had to look twice. I love a two-stroke outboard myself.
Car industry leaders have warned drivers were not switching to electric vehicles at the rate needed to meet the deadline due to the cost of buying the cars privately and charging point infrastructure.
Electric vehicles won’t sell until people can charge them up next to where they live. Or alternatively another charging solution is available like a nearby electric station that charges in one minute.

First isn’t going to happen very quickly and second is not going to happen.
It is an opportunity to put us as a country at the forefront. By that I mean finding a solution like swapping batteries rather than charging and going with it. Doubt it will happen as money and imagination is required.

As I said, 70% already have the potential to do so at an "on-plot" charger.

Naturally, some manufacturers have been slower than others at entering the EV market. Ford were slow. They and their slow mates are now complaining.
The transport minister has said the 2030 date will not change. The consultation is to see if 'how they get there' might change.
Hopefully they will spend time consulting about what to do with all the UK car production and supply chain employees that will be out of work when car production moves to somewhere that’s more realistic and got in arse in gear to cash in

Last month, Ford said the UK government's mandate to produce and sell more electric vehicles (EVs) "just doesn't work" without demand.
