A question would be would you take Ahadme and Reid from Stevenage for example as your two strikers next season and sell May have some profit and two younger players . Maybe that’s what they’re thinking behind the scenes.0 -
I think it's actually quite good that us fans are clueless regarding transfers in or out this season until the club make announcements.5

No was more of an example from myself , saying someone like Reid or Smith with Ahadme would we take that over May and probably have money to spare.mart77 said:

The cash can be used to help strengthen the squad and everyone’s happy. This is how I see it going with Miles at some point. What bothers me with the Alfie speculation is that we spent £250k and have a sell on clause with Cheltenham. He’s 31 going on 32 and I don’t believe for one second that we’re going to get anywhere near a £1 million let alone £1.5 million. We’re not going to have enough to replace what he gives us and it’s not even as if the player is pressing for a move. I think Jones, if it’s him, will live to regret this sale should it happen. He’ll straight away lose a lot of credit with fans.
. You just don't know what clubs are willing to pay...:-(
My feeling is you keep a player like May, because even if you recruit another striker who better suits the manager’s intended style of play, he’d be a demon coming off the bench at very least. Teams that get promoted have options.
I’m trying to learn how to be less optimistic.6 -
You've nailed it good and proper.KBslittlesis said:I don’t get the logic of cashing in on a top striker now because of his age?
Especially to a club in the same league?
Surely we’d get more spondoolies using his goals to get us promoted to the next level?
Make it make sense 😫😫😫😫😫😫😫
Sorry, completely bonkers when we are desperate to get out of this league that we are even contemplating selling May especially to a potential rival in the promotion race.11 -
No, but give it 3 pages and he will be, along with rumours of him being seen at SL in full kit !mart77 said:

Its 100% down to jones who stays and who he wants to bring in ..Garrymanilow said:Worth remembering that the owners really didn’t want to sign May because of his age and the limited sell on he would likely have. In the end they gave in to Holden insisting and that ended up being their only good decision that summer. It wouldn’t shock me if any move was less based on Jones and more on the owners wanting to sell a 31 year old while his stock is high2 -

Well straight away we’ve improved on Dobson with Berry so we’ll have to wait and see, I personally wouldn’t sell May but teams that do well have a good style and system and if Jones doesn’t think that includes May then so be it.TEL said:Fed up seeing the trust in Jones comments. Trust is earned and half a season with Alfies goals keeping us in the division, doesnt mean we should blindly trust in the messiah that Jones is being made out to be.
Utter madness to even consider letting May go.....but the bonkers regime sanctioned George going so let’s see if they have learnt anything.
I hope so but let's wait and see him play first.
Covering every blade of grass, some big tackles and good moments on the ball. Then the icing on the cake would be scoring in front of the Covered End as he did in last game at The Valley.2 -

Don’t disagree, I was only challenging the idea that no one would pay £1m+ for May.RaplhMilne said:
So clubs looking for promotion will pay big money for May. But, we are so bloody fantastic, we don’t need him. Or we have no promotion ambition ?Scoham said:
Sunderland paid £3-4m for Will Grigg in January 2019 and Ipswich spent several million on fees to get promoted from this division. It’s not that much of a stretch to think there could be one or two clubs in this league willing to pay £1m or so for May.ShootersHillGuru said:

It is interesting that one source says the club would be interested in making a profit on by far and away our best player, but another source will say that we are no longer shopping in pound land and will only be signing top players. Just doesn't scream cash strapped if we are bothered about making a slight profit on the league top goalscorer.BR7_addick said:

Worst ITK on Charlton life and I deserve the stick..
However I’m seeing him Wednesday night and I’ll defo ask him then if he doesn’t reply to my message, he will have something like I said very very close to Alfie.
Me: Forgot to ask you today, anything from Alfie May on the Huddersfield bid!?
Source: Only just noticed you sent me this mate.Alf is happy at Charlton but with his age the club are interested in making a profit on him if they can.
If these owners are cash strapped, like it's been alluded to, then why would they be looking to make the kind of profit, which would probably be a couple of hundred grand at best, after Cheltenham have also had their slice.
It's hardly selling Leaburn for multi millions (not that I think that's his value) to a premier league club, that doesn't effect us. It's a league rival who are already looking like one of the early favourites for the promotion mix. Can't get over that it's even being entertained tbh.
If they're looking to make a profit of a few hundred grand, without looking at the bigger picture, then it's a bit concerning for me.
Anyway, not to be all negative, Berry, and potentially Mitchell plus Edwards all appear to be decent signings. Hopefully more of that to come and less news of selling our prized assets.

Im a big fan of NJ and think in him we potentially have a very good fit for our club. I'm cautiously optimistic about next season, with or without May.
But that doesn't mean your two statements aren't contradictory, because clearly they are.
Either players CAN be improved and their performance and that of the team improved or they are to be judged only on the teams finishing position.
No amount of positivity from fans changes that.Don’t see how they are contradictory, facts are, the players haven’t been good enough, so doesn’t both me if they go, and the ones that stay, need to do better!8 -

Haha you're right, no more bad Penneys please......... their and our success has reversed hasn't it and the boot might be well and truly on the other foot now.......... and no, before anyone thinks I'm hinting at something.....that's not a rumour they're in for Alfie, Miles, DK, Thierry or anyone else for that matter....... as far as I know.....soapboxsam said:WrightCharlie said:

True Charlie, but the days of picking up Darren Bent and Matt Holland from Ipswich have long since gone; i think you can say the Penney has dropped !

I think the issue is you can't just spend £5m without it having to be balanced a bit somewhere somehow. Whether that's through player sales, increased pricing on tickets, more commercial deals and sponsorships, or through adding it on as debt or writing it off as equity, it has to go somewhere. So maybe selling May for more than a million helps to balance the books in that way.
Clubs can't just say "fuck it let's spend spend spend and to hell with the rules"2 -
Given his age shouldn't we be looking to cash in before the end of the window?Scoham said:
Admittedly a while ago now but Berry got into double figures three times at Cambridge, and one of those he scored 17.thenewbie said:Berry is a good signing but most number of goals he's scored in one season is 6. Kanu is a prospect and will hopefully kick on but scored 6 in the league last year. Aneke and Leaburn are both capable of scoring but need careful management, even when fit Leaburn got about 12 goals I think.
Add their best seasons all together and they just about equal Alfies numbers last time out or just short. If May goes that is a massive deficit of goals to make up. Could it be done, yes probably it could. But it would be very difficult to do and however you look at it would be at the very least a gamble.
I am definitely not in the "if he goes, I go" school of overreacting. But his departure would certainly be a massive blow and pile a lot of pressure on Jones and the rest of the team.

Actually in League 1 you can! You just have the £billionaires put it in as equity and that investment is directly allowed to reduce your losses and remain with FFP.sam3110 said:I think the issue is you can't just spend £5m without it having to be balanced a bit somewhere somehow. When you get to the Championship you can't.
Now, begs the question - put the money in now and get into the Champtionship and closer to break even or sell your best player(s), recruit new players and if you don't go up, keep losing circa £5m-£8m per year infinite....
I'm NOT a £billionaire, but if I was, I would go with option A8 -

If Alfie May goes and we’re not winning our first home game by 4 or more goals at HT, then I think we should chuck 3000 Alfie May beach balls on the pitch in the second half.8

Edwards will be announced soon (today/tomorrow). Mitchell will be announced next week as Millwall not keen to be posting about transfers so soon after their player passed away.ross1 said:I keep reading that a player had a medical yesterday and other players the deal is done. It's Edwards who had his medical yesterday so I guess we'll find out in the next couple of days and the other player is probably Mitchell and any announcement of that will obviously be delayed so that Millwall don't have to post about anything for as long as they wish.ross1 said:I keep reading that a player had a medical yesterday and other players the deal is done.
