All About Charlton - BBC Radio London tonight 7pm - exclusive interview with Thomas Sandgaard

The problem I have with it all is that he doesn't have anyone in place to tell him where he may or may not be going wrong.AFKABartram said:Personally I think people are being v harsh. If he was saying this with us in the play off position then people would probably be agreeing with him. There needs to be a long term shift change to make football clubs more financially viable.
Key thing for me is his enthusiasm and approach for next season seems high, talk of increasing budget further and at a competitive level for promotion, seems there’s a fair strategy think already in place for next year, that Jacko is clearly in plan for next season etc
Perhaps I misread it all
And from what I've just heard he definitely needs that type of person in his sphere.
Also, he's not really saying anything different from what he was saying 18 months ago. It really doesn't sound very progressive to me.
Just a bloke who's stumbled his way into the football scene who's going to have a lot of fun and lose a lot of money along the way.7 -

3rd biggest budget in league 1 , and we’ve not even got a CEO, where’s it all been spaffed, pizza Friday?0

We've paid fees for Stockley, Kirk, DJ, Schwartz, Clare, Lavelle, Aneke and Fraser since TS bought the club. Must be a couple of million on fees alone.Mendonca In Asdas said:3rd biggest budget in league 1 , and we’ve not even got a CEO, where’s it all been spaffed?14 -
Johnnie Jackson: Charlton manager part of club's long-term plan, says owner Thomas Sandgaard

I thought that was a car crash interview.
No need for knowledge and experience in football when a subscription to Sky and a smart son installed at the training ground will do.
Think JJ might just be looking over his shoulder now - it ain't gonna cost much to get rid of him.

In summary he said, "We only need a few players, we have the U23's, he wants to break even & doesn't need over paid football people running the club, because it's just common sense. Still reckons we can reach The Prem".He's morphed into Roland.12

I wouldn't dispute for a minute that he shouldn't shoulder some of the blame for how things stand, but do think the players and management / recruitment department just as, if not more, calpable.5

You're right, if we're in the play off positions a lot would agree with him but, as we all know, we're not even close
Missed the beginning of the interview re: Jackson and while it's good IMHO that JJ is staying it does sound like the dreaded vote of confidence.
It just seemed to be "football isn't that complicated and I know best". Well, his way hasn't worked that well so far.
He did say the focus was on increasing revenue rather than reducing costs, which is good and a key difference from Duchachatelat (who lost a fortune in less time than Murray et al and with no equivalent success).
And he DID did accept, despite what some are saying, that winning football was an important part of filling the Valley and so building revenue.
Been generally positive about TS but wasn't impressed by what I heard. Lots of optimism and positively, which I like, a lot less detail as to how things will be improved in the short or medium term.

his passion for the club and tenacity for it is positive, albeit annoying if he continues to want to have a hands on role on the business side!Ideally he will realise he needs a CEO - could the CACT interview help?Says Martin Sandgaard knows a lot more about football than himself, and that he believes English football as a business isn’t too complicated and more common sense- which id tend to agree with, albeit you have to get it right!Think his American bravado of ‘I know I’m a good businessman’ chat is frustrating , and yes whilst he’s made good sums of money and started a positive business, doesn’t equate to being able to just breeze through the league2 -

He said he/we have lost £8M this season.
He is going to increase the budget next season.
He wants to break even.
Where is the extra £8M+ coming from?
He seems as deluded as Roland to me, albeit a nice egotist.15 -

Did anyone really expect much different in an interview? He will want to continue to sound bullish and confident even if the reality of this season is far from expectations.Doesn’t mean he believes it or anyone else really. It’s just what he feels he needs to say.Reality is we don’t seem to be throwing cash at staff to improve the off field infrastructure and he wants to grow revenue not cut costs. But if we start from the RD base I imagine costs were trimmed as far as they could be anyway. He has spent on players as indeed did RD but they haven’t paid off. Bad luck or poor scouting or both ?
Football success is not a science and whilst should be simple it never is.His optimism I assume is that the players are better than our current form suggests and it need not be a complete overhaul to be more competitive. But privately I assume he is worried JJ can’t get more from them.5 -
Increased advertising and sponsorship linked to more "eyeballs" in the stadium is part of it as he said in the interview.Covered End said:AFKABartram said:Personally I think people are being v harsh. I can't see how that fills the £8m gap on it's own but it does fit in with other rumours about expenditure to increase advertising revenue.1 -
go onto BBC sounds app, select BBC London and select the relevant show. It’s available now. Sandgaard interview was in the last half hour of showcharltonbob said:Is there a catch up where we can hear this interview ( though I almost dread listening to it

He's sounding exactly like RD now.
Thinks he can run the club with people who have no idea and additionally he can run it at break even.
He will also get us to The Premier League breaking even.
No chance, not when everyone else is spending money like confetti.10 -

Come on, it’s laughable. “Eyeballs” needed for significant growth in commercial revenue come from media exposure, which he cannot get in L1 and won’t really get in the Championship, even if he gets there.Henry Irving said:

I think it's more that he's trying to be/is naturally optimistic and sees all problems as solvable while also being a hard nose businessman who realises that the English football model, as seen in its most extreme form at Derby, doesn't work.TN15 said:He's in cloud cuckoo land.
Whether he can buck that I doubt.
If everyone else is overspending can we/he do it using a different model.
