Agree with second paragraph but to be honest, apart from a five minute spell in the first half, South Africa were thoroughly in charge of that game. It wasn’t a park the bus performance. More about complete physical control among the forwards.LenGlover said:

If you were a neutral who decided to watch that game, you wouldn’t have enjoyed it. And it was a World Cup final! I can’t remember the last boring World Cup final for football. 2018 there were 6 goals, 2014 there was a late winner, 2010 there was a late winner, 2006 it went to penalties. I could carry on.

I agree with you. South Africa played it tight and controlled it. I was trying to find a footballing analogy to explain the thinking for those who do not necessarily follow rugby regularly.Sillybilly said:

Despite that SA play quite a bit of Anti-Rugby, but we didnt have the nous to deal with it.
Shame really, but maybe the authorities need to look at this scrum bollox, as it isnt conducive to creating a spectacle, plus being so long and boring to perform.0 -

And many England teams in the past have been criticised for being all about the scrum and kicking, and not playing "proper" rugby. Including the 2003 team, where the Aussies used to moan it was all about Wilkinson's kicking.LenGlover said:

Some daft reactions on here. Great World Cup by England, beaten by the better team in the final. It wasn’t pretty but they had a game plan and stuck to it. Well done to south Africa and to England for great tournaments.3

Hmm, like the media did to the England footy team when they were knocked out of the Euros in the semi final against an average Croatia team. Oh no, thats right they didnt and that team were treated like heros for an easy ride to the semis then losing to the first decent team they came acrossGammysnr said:Embarrassing. I absolutely agree, my point was the press did not ‘take the footy team apart’ for losing in the semi final and so should not ‘take the rugby team apart’ for losing in the final.The_President said:

Totally agree. I’m really not a fan of the way South Africa play, but winning ugly is still winning, so fair play to them. However, the amount of 'dead-time' around Rugby surrounding Scrums,Time management, etc will always blight it - and today would have been a very boring game for a neutral. As long as you allow Anti-Rugby teams like SA win tournos then it will always have a problem attracting fans/new playres alike. I agree that the scrum needs sorting out, it won't be easy, BUT the set scrum and the line out are integral parts of Rugby Union .. 1/2 the problem is scrum halves taking too long to get the ball in the tunnel .. if you want a fast flowing non stop game with no real scrums, then Rugby League is the game for youThe_President said:tbh, the best team won.

I'm absolutely gutted.
The last time I felt this bad over a lost was the 2-1and 3-1 defeats at the Den.
Yet again a team that is brilliant in a semi final fails to perform in the final. Maybe I got my excuse in early when I said this England side wouldn't peak for two more years.
I watched from 7am and from the Coach turning up just an hour before KO to young Sinckler being Knocked out cold we were on the back foot from the start.
Probably hard to understand for the occasional Rugby watcher how we were tanked today after the excellence of the win over the All blacks ? This is what the Springboks do in finals. Played 3 won 3. They even scored a couple of tries today where it's normally penalities or dropped goals they win World cups.
The term arm wrestle is always used when talking about SA. For England to have won today they had to score the try after 25 phases when they were just a few feet from the try line. Young's for me had to give the ball to his left with both Itoje and Underhill waiting to go over the line but gave the ball to his right where Billy Vunipola was repelled by two giant defenders. That was the closest we came as the ball ended up going wide and we lost territory.
We went from a Derby winner one week to a also ran at the Lingfield trial the next.
South Africa went from Bang average to ripping our arm off. Deserved winners but I'm still gutted.5 -
